I went on Jens' web site about 3 years ago where he had a post lamenting that he had just found out that his song had been ripped off for a commercial (the one in question). His people looked into it and found there was nothing to it. I went back a few months later to find this post and couldn't. At that point I favoured the Heat Wave hypothesis for the inspiration behind the jingle. It is, after all, about a "steam" washer. Sorry I can't prove any of this; but the world has bigger probs.

Here's the story about the song:

LG asked Jens Lekman if they could use his song "A Sweet Summer's NIght on Hammer Hill" in a commercial. He had used samples in the song, so he said "No, but I can make one that sounds similar in vibe & sound", but they didn't reply. They then released this commercial with a very similar song...

BUT Jens himself had sampled it from "Heatwave" by Martha Reeves.

So now you have two great songs to check out.

There's no name that I'm aware of...it's was made by Paul Brill just for this commercial...You absolutely will not find it anywhere, as it was never mass produced. Trust me, I would pay a lot for this song.

its a ripoff of "a sweet summers night on hammer hill" by jens lekman. they asked him for it, he said no, they ripped it off. he makes light of it on occasion and at a festival quipped "i hope this doesn't make you want to buy a washing machine."

so not the same song, but its in the same spirit. its pretty shameless if you listen to it.

they're similar, but the story of them asking jens is pretty well documented. well, relatively well documented. and he uses a version where the trumpet is added over the top that masks how similar they are. that is a pretty common progression in the genre from what i can gather though.

I just checked the version Jens Lekman wrote (and put on his website) and it is different to this. This is more similar to Sweet Summer's Night. So maybe his song gets associated with a washing machine AND and he doesn't get any money for it.

Hey, the song is by Jens Lekman (of whom I'm a pretty huge fan).

They wanted to use "Sweet Summer's Night on Hammer Hill", but he declined because he doesn't want people to associate one of his songs with a washing machine. LG were going to get other people to rerecord it, so he wrote something with a similar feel instead.

The 'original' is infinitely better!

although, jens lekman changed the instruments, he most certainly perpetuated the same rhythmic tune. that consistent tune is far too similiar to 'heatwave' to be created independently. Furthermore, I would hardly consider it a fair assessment to base the identity-of-origin solely upon simple initial seconds of the commercial. So I guess, in that regard, I was mainly considering the majority of the tune -- not the minority or instruments utilized.

If one was to examine closely there are two melodies present in the tune. The objective (wind instruments) and the subjective (percussion instruments). Although the objective is played at a higher octave, the subjective is the core feeding the tune.

This tune is most certainly a cover of Martha Reeves & the Vandellas song "Heatwave," which was written in 1964 by Holland-Dozier-Holland for Motown Record Label. It is most certainly a beautiful cover that rivals the original tune. It captures that gospel, jazz, and rhythm & blues feel simultaneously. P.S. the woman is also beautiful.

I've just listened to heatwave. It is similar, but it's only the background. Jens Lekman's "a sweet summer's night on hammer hill" is much closer in that it has the background music, the trumpet, and the some of the same lyrics (you can hear the no no no at the end of the commercial.)
