Ah, the Miles/Gil Evans trilogy. Miles Ahead, Porgy And Bess, and Sketches Of Spain...never will you hear three albums, back to back, this great for the rest of our days.
I thought of this song when watching Ken Burn's "Jazz" and specifically KB's recounting of Miles' story of kicking heroin at his fathers farm outside of East St. Louis, IL. He mentioned how he went to a little two-room upstairs apartment in a guest house on his fathers farm. He locked the door and for seven days went thru the physical rage of withdrawal. On the seventh he emerged "smelled the sweet smell of my fathers farm. When he saw me he smiled..." Yeah, Summertime.
When I listen to the classic tune I think of a haunting pursuit of rest. A lifting of a stone from the heart to finally have a breath of motionless halt.
The Master! They make it sound easy, playing in that "cool" groove...,but musicians today are a bit more hyper,I think. Check out the Concert at Montreux 1991"...,you'll see what I mean.
That 1 dislike is like Lady Gaga's penis, its incredibly small and shouldn't be there.

Miles Davis was a music genius. He played what was scripted on the inside of his heart.

I think this is the best version. Hands down. Well worth the 6.99 I paid for the album.
