  • Where can I purchase these EV speakers? What model are they?

  • Love your tone man. Very SRVesque. I've been deciding between 60s twin or super, and I think I'm going for the super just so I can get it to break up easier without blowing my ears out. Any opinion on my situation? I do play live, but only bars at the moment.

  • I'd really like to see it cranked up this high with it's CTS Alnicos!

  • Damn great tone. Also, great idea posting the amp far away from the camera to avoid that annoying camera mic distortion that most people on youtube have.

  • You nailed the John Mayer overdriven tone. Plus you play GREAT. Btw, is that a road worn strat?

  • Comment removed

  • great sound....stock pickups?

  • WOW TU SONIDO ESTA DE SUPER HUEVOS QUE CHINGON, FELICIDADES, HAY GENTE QUE GASTA MAS DE 10000 USD PARA SONAR ASI TU LO LOGRAS , ESTAS UTILIZANDO ALGUN ATENUADOR O A QUE VOLUMEN ESTA ?, SALUDOS

  • That sounded so good I wanted to throw up!

  • Hey Tyler, that's some serious tone right there.

I was wondering, what are some speakers that are on the market that are similar to the EV speakers?

    Thanks for the great vids!

  • Tyler,

Thanks for sharing this awesome clip. You said the volume was about 5-6.

    How about the EQ settings?

    Thanks

  • Just bought a super reverb re issue i was wondering if you have a problem with the preamp tubes having a rattling noise or what kind of tubes you use. The person at guitar center told me that every tube will do this because they are next to the speakers but with people like SRV and jimmy herring using these non stop i cant see this being true.

  • @Toporaq

Try different tubes. In general, its more common to hear rattle in combo amps, but not all tubes will rattle. I'd simply say experiment with different tubes until the rattle is gone.

  • @Toporaq Try JJ's or EHX. I use them both in various amps and get no rattle or vibes whatsoever. Great tone too.

  • @monsterwilly23 Thanks, I just got a pair of jj's 6l6's for the power tubes cant wait to hear how it sounds.

  • What value pots are in the guitar, 500k or 250k?

  • 250K

  • have you ever done work on a silverface super? if so, is the sound similar to this?

  • Check out my other modified super reverb clips on youtube. They all turn out about the same. This particular clip is a bit misleading since the method of recording muffled and warmed up the the tone. THe other clips are a better representation of the end-result.

  • Check out my other youtube clips. They all turn out about the same. This clip is a bit misleading since the method of recording wasn't a good representation of the amps real sound. The other clips are more accurate.

  • Check out my other youtube clips. They all turn out about the same. This clip is a bit misleading since the method of recording wasn't a good representation of the amps real sound. The other clips are more accurate.

  • Sent you an email yesterday. Want you to do some work for me. Boutique BFSR.

  • sic man

  • Is that max saturation on a cranked Super Reverb ?

    :-(

  • actually no, I titled the video a little misleading. The amp was only on 5-6 on the volume knob. To see a bit more saturation, check out my other modified super reverb clips. I demo the amp on 10 for a while.

  • Which Van Zandt pups are you using? I've got a 76 Strat with a Vintage Plus in the Neck, RWRP Vintage Plus in the Middle, and Blues pup in the Bridge and the Neck position seems to be WAY hotter than the bridge even though the Blues model are supposed to be hotter than the Vintage Plus. Anyways... which set are you using? Killer tone by the way bro

  • I believe they were a full set of vintage plus'. The reason the neck may seem hotter is because the blues pickup, in my experience, curls WAY too many highs of the signal giving a more muted muddy sound. Its also very possible you have a dud pickup. Hard to say. Try grabbing a single bridge vintage plus pickup and find out.

  • Great tone and playing!

  • Nice tone man,my favorite! I am having super reverb from 1974,no master. Is there any chance for me to get that your phenomenal tone? The problem is that I am living in Croatia(europe) so the shiping of my amp in Minneapolis would cost a fortune,so is there some other way to solve my problem? Best regards! Goran

  • thanks gamedojo you got the best sounding amp for that texas flood stuff pick on bro

  • i got the van zants did you notice how weak the 5 and 2 position are is that normal the guy said it was for rythum mostly but i like to use them lead what do you yhink

  • Hmmm... I don't think I noticed them "weak". But I think you may have some wiring problems. I still am not sure what causes it, but I once had a neck pickup from one manufacturer and a middle from another, and with stock wiring (black to ground, white to switch) they would cancel themselves out in 2 position. Swapped the black/white on ONE pickup and it works great again. Give it a try...

  • lol i understood too i was just messing around. Although, how the hell did he come up with exaggerated strat tone. it's a fucken strat, of course it's going to sound like a strat. Btw, great tone and playing on your part and i think every tone is "valid".

  • lol, exaggerated strat tone... i think that to people that just means good tone. He obviously doesn't like strats though lol

  • Possibly, but I do understand what he's trying to say, though he could have said it in a more respectable manner. From my experience there are two directions to go for true strat sounds. My way, "exaggerated" or the more clean, funky sparkly "Dire straits" sorta vibe. Both are valid and can sound great.

  • sounds just like stevie ray, which means i fucking hate that exaggerated strat tone...FUCK YOU, but props on the nice amp

  • @PlayaDontHate24 I am so confused.....?

  • Great playing man. That is some awesome tone.

I just laughed at the fact that you're all the way down a hallway. Great video none the less

  • LOL! I got the video camera as a gift and had never made a video before. I first intended to put it down the hallway so the massive volume wouldn't overload the camera mic. But it STILL did, so I had to use my H4 recording for the video.

  • Nice chops brotha

  • 67 and 68 must have been great years for the super. listen to the u tube 68 silverface video-fabulous warm tone also

  • One of the best tones I've heard from a Super. Great work!

  • common pickle, give us a break - it's just a great guitar tone and some fantastic tunes - why playing them makes somebody a wannabe? And this guy even can play really really well - thumbs up from me - on all your Super Reverb demos - gives a very good impression of this amp. Thanks for that!

  • Am I on a talent contest?

  • sorry...which pickup you plugged in your stratocaster?van zandt vintage plus?blues?true vintage?these and those?

you have a great sound ....very wonderful sound....

  • Van Zandt Vintage Plus all around in this video.

  • @gamedojo

and which set of strings you plugged?ghf?daddario?fender ?elixir?

    thank's ...!

  • Probably GHF... not really sure. Never really cared since strings go dull so fast.

  • You ever use an attenuator with your amp? I almost never crank my Super Reverb because it's so loud. I'm thinking about maybe getting a THD Hot Plate and using it with my Super. Any thoughts about that?

  • Sounds really good mate! Do you think you can get this kind of sound out from an deluxe reverb as well?

  • I'd have to say no. The actual circuits on both amps are actually identical, but the tiny output transformer and 6v6 tubes really limit the punch and clarity needed at such extreme volumes.

  • On my DRR I popped in some SED cryo treated 6L6 in place of the 6V6. Next came a drop in solid state rectifier in place of the 5AR4. Re-biased on the hot side. Sounds great but is missing something... Any recommendations? I'm thinking of totally changing the speaker complement. Though the stock jensen has about 40+ hours of play...

  • Seems drastic, but it sounds like a Output transformer upgrade is in order. The OT on those Deluxe Reverbs are VERY small and simply can't handle the low end like a bigger super reverb OT. Try sticking a 8ohm Bassman size transformer in there to match up with the 6l6s and you'll see a dramatic improvement.

  • Thanks - I've been looking into a new transformer. Some Iron from Mercury Magnetics. I'll look into it.

  • Bias it cold!! 32 mA per tube! trust me!

  • I'll try it. Thanks for your suggestion! A happy man has good tone.

  • what are your settings?

  • The settings have been posted early, but it really doesn't matter since my amp has been modified enough that the exact same settings will sound very different on another amp. But if you're looking for a similar SRV vibe, bright switch on and lots of treble will get you the gain you need.

  • Do you prefer to crank the amp or play with volume around 3-4? I usually only play in that volume range.

  • 5-7 on the volume is a good sweet spot for my super with the mods I've done. Play soft and its clean, dig in and it overdrives.

  • Your guitar looks very similar to mine. I have an American Deluxe V-Neck with maple fretboard and 3-Tone Sunburst ( I think that's what it's called.). Is that what you're playing here?

  • nope. I've mentioned it here before, but its a real 1971 Fender strat. Back then, they only made one kind.

  • Sounds excellent!! My kind of tone!! What exactly do you mean by "Disconnected"?

  • Thanks! I actually work and modify the circuits of my amps. I desolder and disconnect components inside the amp to "disconnect" the trem and norm channel.

  • great tone man...

  • very cool sound

would you reccommend the zoom h4 for recording cranked amps

im looking into getting something like the zoom because ive tried using a cheap rock band mic but it distorts and sounds terrible with my cranked bassman

    thanks

  • Yeah! It works great with cranked amps because of the various ways you have to control how much signal is getting into the unit. It CAN overdrive, but setting it right will prevent that.

  • can you use the two internal mics and external mics at the same time to record?

  • Not sure what you are asking. Technically you can use as many mic's as you want.

  • it has two inputs for additional mics right?

do you know if its possible to have the two mics built into the device recording as well as another mic that is hooked up via an xlr cable?

say for drums or something that may require more than the ones built in

    thanks

  • Oh! now I get you question. Sorry, but no, you can on either use the internal mics, or plug in XLRs and use external.

  • Thanks!!!

  • Great stuff brother!

I have an original super and a couple EVM-10m Series 2 speakers laying around.. Do you use Series 1 or 2?

Do you know if there is there much of a difference in tone between the two?

  • There is no difference at all between 1 and 2 other then cosmetics.

  • Well I swapped out the two lower speaker for the 10m's I have and I like it a lot - don't know what to do with the reverb tank now though.

I'd like to get a couple more now. I wonder if I could cut a custom speaker board that would fit all the speakers in there around the transformer and reverb tank....

BTW I also run the Van Zandt pickups in my Strat... good stuff

  • What about EV 10L, any good? Also, how did you fit EV 10M's in your super reverb? thanks

  • I've heard they are a little more midrangy, but I have no first hand experience.

I don't have them inside the super. I have a 4x10 cab separate that I use the 4x EVs in. Makes transporting MUCH easier. I keep the original CTS AlNiCos in the amp for backup.

  • Great sounding SR and great playing!

Can you tell me wich tube you use in the

    V2 position; 12ax7 or 5751?

  • ALWAYS use a 12ax7. 5751 tubes are band-aids over other issues that need to be addressed in the amp. They sound warmer and softer, but a that the price of clarity, bite, gain, tone...etc. I used to use 5751s, but soon realized they were hurting my sound.

  • Thanks for the reply! In what way do you mean 'hurting' your sound?

  • Great, great tone. My original '64 Super Reverb sounds way brighter than yours. Painfully so. Any advice on taming my top end? It's got the original Jensens in it and is very clean (I'm 2nd owner and it's been well kept/ serviced) but is so ungodly bright I've been unable to use it anymore for records and concerts.

    Again, great tone man.

  • Try some different things with your eq knobs. Alot of people are scared to experiment...but I guarantee if you turn your treble and mids down together you will see some results. Keep in mind...that the treble on fender amps can be "ice picky." The mid control works great for taming some of that as well. So try turning those controls down a fair amount and see what you can come up with.

  • Thanks for the response, vanillasr08. I was looking for tips on non-invasive mods. Believe me, I've had the eq in every possible cofiguration on this amp in the 10 years I've owned it. I have 6 vintage Fenders and this one is by far the hardest to tame. My '63 Bassman is bright, but musically bright. The Super is just icepicky if the treble knob is above 2!

  • Ridiculous tone...which EV speakers are you using?

  • EVM 10m

  • Dude, i dream of this tone !!! And i just bought myself a SR a few weeks ago... But... Im a bit stuck on the settings for a good blues kinda sound. Canya Help ?

  • Settings are 100% different depending on speakers, tubes, guitar, volume, room...etc. But what I can tell you is that ALL of these blackface fender circuits have the Treble control as the main "valve" for cutting off gain. The more treble you use, the more drive/gain you're gonna get. Otherwise, just experimenting is the best help I can give. Sorry.

  • I have a question about the Zoom recorder...

I'm considering buying something like Zoom H2 (I suppose it's basically the same with less features and maybe worse quality or something compared to H4, but anyway...)

Is it possible to record a whole band with it? And I don't mean like profi quality, but the volume issue is what I'm interested in... particularly if the mic will overload in such setting. Or is it possible to record on high volume levels with it? thanks

  • Whole band recording is basically what its designed for. The mic's have a gain level adjustment so it can handle pretty high SPLs...

  • that's great, thanks for the fast reply. by the way you are a great player dude, and that super sounds... well super :)

  • this sounds really good. If I close my eyes, I can see SRV.

  • silverface or blackface?

  • Silverface nameplate, but blackface circuitry

  • Sounds killer!

  • How can you have both channels disconnected?

  • Channel 1 is disconnected completely, and the just the Tremolo circuit in Channel 2 is disconnected.

  • Hey brother killer sound = SRV

    one question

    what does Vibrato channel disconnected-

    normal channel disconnected?

    Thank you so much!!!

  • wow that little wing riff at the end sounded just like SRV that was incredible

  • Last stupid question -> Which of the Van Zandt pickups do you have?

  • Vintage Plus

  • A question for you! What song is the first riff from? 00:00->00:08

  • Nothing. Just me messing around. When working on these old fenders, I do my best to prevent ALL bass flub. So the riff was to show that.

  • It sounds excellent anyway. Imagine it going x2 in the beginning of a song, and then drums and bass kicks in!

  • Yes, I'm slightly weird :-)

  • SRV tone - It sounds fucking sweet.

  • Yea man I have several strats and play the same stuff you do plus a little Skynyrd and Zeppelin mixed in with it and i love it..you sound good bro

  • Best sounding Strat on youtube PERIOD

  • THANKS! Let this be a lesson that not all 70's strats are dogs:)

  • hey man, what does it mean when you put normal and vibro channels disconnected? is like like having your inputs dimed?

  • Nope. The Vibrato channel is disconnected by unsoldering the wire going to the intensity pot. And the normal channel is removed by unsoldering the mixing resistor right before the phase inverter.

  • Can you do this to a Fender Twin Reverb as well?

  • yes

  • Smokin stuff ! Glad to find you. Im currently having a load of work done to my super & if it sounds anything like your's im gonna be smilling. Boogie on bro !

  • well, you definitely have stevie's tone in my opinion.

  • hey could you please post your amp settings it would be most appreciated.

    Thank You!

  • Amp settings are very different depending on guitar, amp, speakers, tubes...etc. So my settings won't necessarily help you too much. But here they are:

    V:5.5

    BRIGHT:ON

    T:6.5

    M:7

    B:3

    R:0(reverb you hear is room)

  • the volume was only on 5.5. dang

  • lol..yeah, but remember, with the unloading of the normal chan and vibrato taken out of the circuit, the amp distorts much earlier then most supers.

  • oh ya true. excellent anyway

  • Is that so? How would I unload the normal channel and take out the vib?

  • awesome tone man, i was wondering what power tubes your running?

  • 7581a ... Its a 6l6 varient. Not for the faint of heart.

  • yea ive heard of them... are you running sylvanias or ge's or what? just wondering. i retubed my jtm45 with a 5751 and a mullard gz34 and i was looking at 7581's for power tubes. its like the american version of the kt66 right?

  • Sylvanias when I can find them... I'm not sure if they are kt66s or not.

  • Like Ive said before man you have great Super tone! Thanks for the advice on the Philips!

  • nice... i was thinking about switching up to 11s from 10s. You seem to have a lot more spank with 11 guage. And the van zandts sound nice as well. Do you have 4 springs in the back or do you float the tremolo at all? I'm throwing together a strat piece by piece is the reason i'm asking all these questions lol

  • Bigger strings always sound bigger to me. But anything above 11 doesn't seem to change the sound. I use all the springs. I never use the wammy bar. Good luck with your strat. Just remember, if the guitar doesn't sound good unamplified, it won't sound good plugged in.

  • What size strings do you play?

  • 11-58

  • What kind of tubes do you have?

  • what settings on the amp and guitar?

  • Is that a ash or alder body Strat?

  • Have no idea. Though, I think its Alder.

  • you have the guitar sound that I'm looking for, it's awesome, thanks for your video

  • Wow good sweet sound hendrix/SVR mix, which model of Van zandt? Vintage Plus or Blues Strat Set?

You can give me a precise answer, please, thanks, Ciao

  • Vintage Plus, but I want to try the true vintage someday! Thanks!

  • Ok,thank you,for your answer and for the good blues vibration. ;-)

    Have a nice days! Ciao

  • this is the THE tone!

    Killing...

  • AWESOME GREAT SOUND !!!!!!Great player !!!Congrats ++++++++

  • Regardless of the flavor of music or tone, IMO Van Zandt makes some of the finest pickups around. They put my Fender Texas Specials to shame. I own 5 strats each with a different configuration and the Van Zandts are my favorite.

  • you've said in two different posts that speakers are:

    *evm 10"

    *evm12L in a 410 cab

i supose you are using evm10,don't you?

    thanks

  • EVM 10m ...10" speakers. Sorry for the confusion

  • outrageous tone! what's the strat and pickups? nice playing too, btw.

  • Thanks! '73 strat with Van Zandt Pickups.

  • Hi,

    which model of Van zandt?

  • Vintage Plus I believe

  • i have the same pickups but i can't reach the same sound, maybe it's amp (a rivera pubster).

i have less attack, softer and little muddy.

how is the distance between strings and pickups in your guitar?

    thank you

  • I'm pretty sure you won't get the same sound with a different amp.

Also, I have pretty big strings and my strat does have a very strong mids presence then most strats I've played. I would first start looking into a genuine fender amp and go from there.

  • i've to find another amp it's difficult to find a good fender sound-like amp but small cause my appartment is small.

i've owned a blues junior but i wasn't quite happy.

I think only a few big size fender models sound good.

i use .011 DR pure blues strings.

  • blues junior sounds great cranked. what was wrong was yours?

  • What gauge strings? I noticed you tune down so they must be pretty thick. Also, how high are your pickups if you happen to know or can describe?

  • do u use pride and joy ladipo overdrive ?

  • No. But its funny you mention that drive box. I've owned one a while back. liked it, but I like the real drive from an amp a bit better. I recommend them, but I'm just guitar right into the amp.

  • Cool! I've got a '66 w/CTS Alnico speakers.

    What speakers are you using?

  • I use EVM 12L speakers in a separate 4x10 cab (because they don't fit in the amp since they are so freaking huge). But the actual amp still has those same CTS AlNiCo speakers.

  • omg man!! you totally have the SRV tone bro, great playing. i have a 65 twin reverb reissue and i've tried cranking it, but damn it has too much clean headroom that you don't really get any natural drive you know? it has 4 powertubes, will it help if i take out 2 of them and then crank it? will it be safe for the twin? please help man, i've asked many others on youtube that have twins and they never reply, i'd really appreciate it bro, thanks! and great playing ;]

  • Thank you so much for the compliments!

Taking 2 tubes out may help a bit, but its not the best method. You might want to consider a lower wattage super or even lower. Reissues are actually great amps. They just need a little help. A better speaker and tube selection is a great starting point. Theres lots of depth you can go to get better tone out of your amp.

  • nice playing man

  • wow man.

the world misses players like you.

and nice choice of strat, my mate just bought one exactly the same.. is it a USA or a standard?

  • thanks, thats a good compliment;)

Its a 1973 strat. They only made them in the US back then...heh

  • Being a surf music fan, I love lots of reverb

  • Amp settings are very different depending on guitar, amp, speakers, tubes...etc. So my settings won't necessarily help you too much. But here they are:

    V:5.5

    BRIGHT:ON

    T:6.5

    M:7

    B:3

    R:0(reverb you hear is room)

  • do ou get on the bright dude?

  • GORGEOUS tone, some of the best blues sounds/playing I've heard in quite a while. Tremendous stuff.

  • thanks gamedojo!!big help for me.

    keep on playin'that way.wonderful touch

  • Awesome playin' and awesome tone! 5+++ stars!

  • i must say firstable i really love your touch.i'm playin'for twenty years and i also teach in 3 private music schools here in spain .

once said that,i would like you telling us more about your sr.i'm searching a second hand one or reissue for 4 or 5 months and the old ones are a bit expensive for me at the moment,so maybe i go for a reissue.anyway i'd like to know what speakers you have on this fantastic sr.thanks for that video and for showing us your playing

  • Thanks! The super reverb is a 1967, but actually has the silverface panel. Its a ab763 circuit, but I got it for relative cheap because of the silverface cosmetics.

There isnt much more to say about the amp exept that the trem channel was disconnected at the intensity control and I use big heavey EVM 10m Speakers.

  • beautiful

  • Great tone, man. What volume and tone settings do you have on the guitar?

  • The amp settings are already posted, and the guitar is all on 10 for the most part... I think at one point I dropped the guitar volume to 8 for a few licks, but thats it.
