i've never played football, baseball, basketball, hockey ect. but still enjoy them. you should try it before counting youself out. (plus these guys are in the olympics so it is very confusing)
@akamaru576 I have no problem with that, it's not exactly the most exciting thing to watch I suppose unless you can understand what their doing anyways.
@CameraMan4000 thats the thing about us frenchies........NOT saying we cant parry, but it will never be as strong as when we use a pistol grip. i love the reach though :)
when ever my opponent takes to long and makes me impatient like at 4:40 i typically try to b6 or b4and hit them in the shoulder works most of the time
there are some wicked skillshere. thought when i first thought abot fencing i was Kinda hoping for some real kling klong stel on steel action. not just poke eatch other with a long metal stick *sadface* Love the fre guy realy goot movement and tactic :D
@CyrusofChaos Tagliariol must have been planning his third touch his reaction was way too fast. Taglieriol is amaizing with both bladework and footwork invitations, but he seems to use footwork more here. Jeannet's 4th touch he did second intention by the outside flick and then feinted outside and just came in when taglieriol was going through engagement.
oh man, the beauty of this bout is amazing. i found myself just gaping at their form and technique, but then again, they are the best fencers in the world! thanks so much for the commentary, i'm starting to realize how much you need to think ahead if you want to achieve great things in this sport.
This is a great match; very clean indeed. I really enjoyed your comments on strategy, especially the remarks on the importance of tempo. When I used to compete in college, there was nothing better than figuring out an opponent's natural attack and footwork rhythms. If my opponent got flustered by hits in counter-time, I could notch two or three touches in a row.
I agree with Shimas, I've always like fencing but never paid it much mind, watching this wit hthe comments helped get a better understanding, they were tastefully placed and very informative. Thanks for the posts
Thank you for posting video with comments. Because of them the bout is much more interesting to watch for people who do not have much knowledge about fencing.
"Do epee if you like to be patient and waiting for the right moment; it is the slower weapons. Do saber if you like being fast and aggressive and have fast reactions. The are the opposite ends of the speed spectrum."
Personally: I find there is actually not so much different between the two, both requires hitting first (usually). Epee allows you to hit at the last second in counter, but saber gives the surface of blade to use to hit. Epee is also not slow.
I would say try them both out first. I know some amazing epeeists that did saber first and was terrible at saber. Good dynamic epee fencers tend to do well in saber, although not amazing.
There's also other factors to consider. There are far more epee fencers out there than saberists; doing saber you might end up knowing just about everyone you fence. And saber sometimes ends TOO quickly, epee allows for calculated counters/reactions with control
3:06 I find it effective to get a foot hit when the opponent thinks you're going for a more general hit and when they parry they go off guard, once you have them like this you can usually get a foot hit. If not, cross-over...a lot!
Only at the beginning. As skill level increase, the potentials in a french/pommel grip is amazing. In epee, every millisecond is gold, and having that extra three inches definitely make you take less time to hit your opponent. Of course, that does come with a trade off in control, but I generally find pommeler (people who use french grips) are extremely strong and have amazing upper paries. And in general, the classic game for french grip is not ALLOWING the opponent to knock your blade.
I suck so much and yet I love fencing so god damn much!!!

Very nice video, and thank you very much for the commentary, it was very helpful to know exactly what they were doing to get touches.

Yesterday, I was enjoying myself while watching this video. Today however, I'm as scared as all hell for tomorrows epee competition.

Hey, I'm thinking about taking up fencing, I really want to, but I can't decide whether I want to fight saber or epee, which is the best?
Honeycomb9000 2 years ago
The classic response to that would be:
"Do epee if you like to be patient and waiting for the right moment; it is the slower weapons. Do saber if you like being fast and aggressive and have fast reactions. The are the opposite ends of the speed spectrum."
Personally: I find there is actually not so much different between the two, both requires hitting first (usually). Epee allows you to hit at the last second in counter, but saber gives the surface of blade to use to hit. Epee is also not slow.

Pistol grip is better more control
eliwood5837 2 years ago
It has, the french grip is so easy to knock off course because of the weight distribution.
Pistol grip has more control and against a french grip a pistol grip could easily win V - 0
