Well, I was told by petco that they only sell male winter dwarf hamsters. Two months later I took one back and told them that the other male was at the house nursing his babies. As of July 4th 10am, we now have 7 babies... Ugh, but they are so cute!

@doramon97 the hamsters really like the recycled paper bedding. It does not make harmful fumes like pine chips do and it's very soft for them. You can get gray bedding cheap enough, or colored to be fancy.

They are either Campbell's Russian dwarves, or Winter Whites. Please try to buy from local pet stores instead of Petco and Petsmart..... they don't treat their animals well... Dwarves need softwood bedding. People, please RESEARCH before buying an animal...

@majorace2021 Dwarf Hamsters. You can get them at major pet stores (and probably independent ones too). They like soft bedding, so get the recycled paper litter if you want to keep a dwarf hammy. I think dwarfs are more friendly than the teddy bear types.

Campbell species got a bit lighter fur, while the siberian / winter whites got darker and thinker fur. I had two siberians myself, so I am pretty sure these are of the siberian species aswell

These look like Russian dwarfhamsters. And regarding holding them, you have to make sure they trust you and are used to your presence before they allow it. Also, when hamsters are bought after months in the pet store the chances are it will never get tame.

hey everyone, please don't worry about falling hammies.  they weight almost nothing so falling and landing is almost harmless. I take care to keep them out of trouble, but they are very resilient animals and know it. They tend to jump off the coffee table repeatedly if given the chance. Thanks for your concerns :)

nope, they were fine and safe. these are animals that burrow below their litter to sleep. a small thin towel is no problem. If they looked panicked to you, you haven't seen hamsters in real life. I would not mistreat animals and I would definitely not post anything cruel or harmful. relax :)

i used to have a dwarf hamster named Bruce... he lived for 3 years and when he died he had lost one eye and was narcoleptic lol (narcoleptic means u can be walking around and suddenly u just fall alseep then wake up a bit later and usualy u dont remember falling asleep)

Just for your information.. these are Winter Whites. Also calles Russian or Siberian Dwarfhamsters. There not Campbelli's or Roborovski's. Only Winter White can get a winter fleece. Campbelli's are also bigger and Robo's smaller.

Heh, I had 2 hamsters, guy and girl. They bread, and the mommy hamster died before she had her babies D: Vet said she died in labor.. Never been able to have a hamster that could have babies.. and if they did im not exsacly sure how to care for them

me to kinda except the mother had three litters of pups, first one had five second 9 third 3 or five then before the 4th litter could be born both the parents died but i got more now boy and girl again but the male died because of teeth growing too big so i brought a female and i think she might have kids soon im not exactly sure ,so currently i have two dwarfs both girls but the one that didnt die seems kinda like a boy.but if you need help with baby hampsters especially dwarfs just ask me.

I ocurred to me...if the male was from the other sub-species, that may be the reason why 3 died...(it also may have been because the mom isn't very good at it, or doesn't produce enough milk)

If i'm not mistaken there are 2 subspecies of the dwarf hamster. Campbell and Winter white. They can breed together but those that are born are likely to be sterile. I think you have a very nice looking winter white mum:)
