Yes you are correct, Joao Gilberto mostly moaned and whispered and spoke rather than sing, but then again this is Bossa nova, try singing Corcovado or How Insensative, it can be sung but it sounds mostly spoken words.
Claudette is a plain jane singer and this track has heavy echoing.
Sylvia Telles was a far better singer from this era, in addition her voice sounded different from most female brazilian singers, and never an echo to enhance her voice.
