It's an ethos-to-approach thing: there's no right or wrong way, no better or worse way. I find the "remix" comes from embracing an original vision of songwriter and especially producer. It means moving about levels, placement and punch-ins of original tracks, flowing structural continuity in perhaps a longer way. [continued]

Some tweaks not envisioned by the original producer/engineer/musicians can work, but this is I feel much harder than just dumping these in and calling the finished result a remix. This is where I find most remixes don't really work: deviated too far from the original vision, remixes might as well be a different song sampling the original song. They end up sounding like a remark from the remixers that the producer's vision was insufficient.

Again, it's a philosophical difference, neither more valid than the other. It's also a matter of first-face exposure to what resonates most closely with one personally. This probably makes me a dinosaur in that sense, as songs like the original 1984 remixes to Talk Talk's "Such a Shame" were all impressive; all six 1990 remixes of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence", or even the 12" extended 1984 remix of Thompson Twins' "Doctor! Doctor!" were representative approaches of what I loved most.
