Wow, Matt. You only uploaded this 9 days ago and it's already been viewed 11,651 times? How'd you manage to get so much interest? (I mean it's cool and everything, but I'm amazed at the number of views in such a short time.) Nice work, of course. I'd like to see the more advanced prototype.
Hehe, I had a little help from my friends at a well-trafficked blog :-D. Yeah, I really need to post an update, I've just been frustrated about this project so it hasn't received it's fair share of attention lately.
you could just glue the little squares to the platform below them. Even better replace them with like a dome shaped thing for more degrees of movement.
Thanks Josh, i was really impatient so I ended up nailing down the squares instead of waiting for the glue we had to dry. It helped out a bit, but the whole mechanism was still jerky so I replaced them with marbles. That made the movement nicer, but removed the arm's ability to stand up straight, so I got confused and started playing with other projects :-). I'll try to put up an update this week.
You know, I've never played with those, although they might be fun to use in order to control each joint separately. My goal for this project, though, is to make something that is human-powered.

Sure, in my blog post I was asking for pointers to where the design has been used before. I know I didn't invent this idea, I'm just re-learning how to use a wood shop and this seemed like something fun to make.
Not directly, but I have looked at the designs of some mechanical snakes before :-). It would be interesting to learn more about the real ones, though.
Nice spine you have there. I was considering what it would take to get our robots to the next level.... i wonder what the degree of control you would have with this setup...
Thanks! I think there are a lot of interesting properties that this sort of setup can provide over more traditional joints, so it is probably worth looking into.
post a video when you make something out of it.

Have you thought of using muscle wires?

It reminds me of a skyscraper. For some reason when I saw it I pictured a city skyline wiggling/dancing to some background music. Nice concept!

I am sure you have thought of this yourself, and you should feel good that you have.
However, this is a very rudimentary mechanical design and countless applications of this idea exist in mechanical engineering today.

why is everyone ripping on this guy?
he made something and wanted to show people.
never claimed it groundbreaking science or anything.

Designs similar to this have been around for decades.

how awesom would having one of those in your room with like a remote like a metal one just to play with
foamy113 2 years ago
And what will be the use of it?
Its seams really good i have to give you that. Just are you going to shrink it? and then mount it on something? and again what is the use for it?
Great Job though. I will defiantly look at the next video
