Hehe, I had a little help from my friends at a well-trafficked blog :-D. Yeah, I really need to post an update, I've just been frustrated about this project so it hasn't received it's fair share of attention lately.

you could just glue the little squares to the platform below them. Even better replace them with like a dome shaped thing for more degrees of movement.

Thanks Josh, i was really impatient so I ended up nailing down the squares instead of waiting for the glue we had to dry. It helped out a bit, but the whole mechanism was still jerky so I replaced them with marbles. That made the movement nicer, but removed the arm's ability to stand up straight, so I got confused and started playing with other projects :-). I'll try to put up an update this week.

Thanks! I think there are a lot of interesting properties that this sort of setup can provide over more traditional joints, so it is probably worth looking into.
