I believe that the only persons who know what it really means to live at LES are those who has truly lived at the LES. We are diverse and culturally different. Renovations can only upgrade people's style but it does not stop modernization, and it will not stop the rich people from taking over this land. LES has changed and it will continue to change, but I am grateful that I lived at LES.
well i guess when places are renovated they become a bit strange if the people that go there are strange. I guess if mindless renovation takes place, it does not upgrade anybody's life apart from the richest peoples' lives. Renovation is improvement for existing communities, though that does not mean that rich people cannot go there. It means a general increase in social conditions. so why does it tackle the housing market instead of schools and hospitals?
grow up on rivington street, the buuilding i lived in is now a hotel. visited in 94 the supper's youngerest kid adam is still there, entire families gone. the school i went to has been renamed, my name is hector (polo) most of my family and friends are in jail or dead. E-Mail andrades1258@yahoo.com up date me.
New York has become a faggy filthy run down bumhole full of filthy Left Wing poojabbers. This dickhead Michael Bloomberg keeps upping the city taxes whilest New York City turns into a wasteland. This city is filthy and these faggets and other wankers couldnt give a shit except for what sunglasses their wearing. New York like America is fucked up and GAME OVER TO THEM ALL
THESE DAMM HIPSTERS,YUPPIES ARE JUST RUNNING US DOWN....ITS FUCKIN SAD...GO BACK TO WHERE EVERY YOUR FROM,THERES NO MORE LOUD MUSIC CAUSE THEY'D CALL COPS,NO MORE BBQING OUTSIDE IN THE PARK CAUSE THEY'D CALL THE COPS FOR TOO MUCH SMOKE,EVERYTHING ITS A FUCKIN SHAME
I understand its going to change and its sad to see it go, but I really dont thinks its as bad as people are saying. The only thing I know is if they are going to knock down my building I'm not leaving. They will have to knock it down with me inside it.
Such a beauty that has gone to waste. The people who arrive here daily wanted to live the old New York lifestyle with its rich history and culture. They never realized it that since they came they actually killed NYC and the Lower East Side with its clubs, bars, and high rise condo and hotel. It was so alive in a unique way but, they destroyed it. As a friend once told me this. "Yo, how do you kill a revolution", I responded "how?". He in turn replied, " Just commercialize it". Death of the LES
Still in the Lower East Side. Have been here since the day I was born and been living here for 27 years and I'm a third generation LES native who have been living here since. It breaks my heart to see the neighborhood change the way it is now especially with the new waves of people moving in here daily. It was once a thriving neighborhood with an identity that shaped not only the U.S, but the world with its rich history, literature, music and revolution. Gentrification killed LES with vengeance.
thank you..but you're about 15 years too late. it's not like people weren't saying this 15 years ago...better late than never i suppose. i left 10 years ago and thank god for that. it still breaks my heart to see this so many years later.
its a combination of 35 year old selfish yuppy spoiled brats, extremely greedy building owners who will never live to spend their money and lots of foreign born real estate brokers and agents from israel and russia who's god is their money.
I live in Chicago and this is happening now in my neighborhood really sucks to see all my friends and relatives move away, but hopefully it wont happen to our family.
I lived in the LES from the time I was born until I was 17 and then, there was no way to pay the rent. We were forced out.. and I barely go back since all my friends are in jail (lol) but when I do go back.. I'm so sad because everything is changed. Sure its familiar but the neighborhood I remember seems to be a faint memory now. They've destroyed so much of the artwork and graffiti. I tried to get an apartment back there but the rent is ridiculious. Everyday im away from LES tho it hurts.
thanks for posting this. I was there last week, and I did not know how the people who live there felt.

I think she's got a point. She should give up her apartment to a descendant of the Dutch settlers our ancestors helped displace.
