i wish i was born in the 60's or 70's or something, ahhh i fucking hate kesha and all that radio shit, i know that there are great bands now too but aahh nothing compares to this <3
@fliesenfuzzi I think the 'rubber ring' is simply the rubber ring that you'd wear when you can't swim and you go into a swimming pool or the sea, to keep you afloat. So I think Morrissey means that the songs that you hold on to that saved your life are your own 'rubber ring'.
One of their most under appreciated songs, right up there with I dont owe you anything, that joke isn't funny anymore, well I wonder and this night has opened my eyes..
I love how no matter how your feeling, what your feeling or what just happened in your life. Morrissey has written a beautiful piece of art that just covers each and every thing perfectly as if he knows you, I love that about the smiths no other band has ever made me feel like that:)
I wonder if Rubber Ring was inspired by an indentation left around his cock by a condom after gay sex? I still think it's a great song even if he is gay, which I'm fairly sure he is.
When i listen to the Smiths (or to an extent Joy division) for a long amount of time everything else just sounds like noise and only the Smiths sound like music.
This is not VEVO so why do ads keep popping up? If I wanted a certain product, I'd look in a freakin directory or around me where I'm bombarded by every form of advertising out there (credit messages in the sky, waste of gas).
This is MUSIC. Keep the ads out and listen to HIS messages. You don't like what Mozzer has to say then keep away from his stuff, simples!! Don't deflect from the music, please!!
@gav1np Okay, there is really no point in comparing Morrison and Morrissey, but the comparison being an insult to Mozzer? C'mon, you've probably never heard a Doors song in your life. Morrison was a goddam genius.
@adamtzsch Syd Barrett? John Lennon? Keith Richards? And even now, Brett Anderson or Pete Doherty? Do you realise that your argument is really... laughable?
This is with out question one of the very best lyrics Morrissey ever wrote... Marr composed a killer tune here... The Smiths synergy is evident here. This was one of the songs i used to feel was my very own.....nothing has changed with the passing of time.
I say, they made really good use of samples and soundbites in some of their songs. I think the only other band to do that back in the 80's was Big Audio Dynamite.
Fortunately i first discover the Smiths when i was twelve and fell completely in love with them... during my teenage i didn't have any friends, only them.
Now that i'm seventeen their lyrics have the same effect in my life that the they used to...
@ilovewoofy The ring is metaphorical for marriage and it's rubber because he's speaking as if the fans are married to him and now they're loosely connected or not as authentic fans as they used to be.
A friend had given me this album at a time when I was in a particularly dark place in my life. I'd decided I needed to think some things over and - don't ask - had taken an acid blotter by myself in my appartment, listening to this. It is the closest I've gotten to a genuine religious experience, like I was lifted up out of normal time, into something one might term 'mythic' time. Imagine the sublime shock I felt hearing the 'You are sleeping...' bit at the end. Mozza gave me back my humanity.
one of the most underrated and clever songs that the Smiths (and Morrissey) ever wrote. and despite Mozzer's reputation for being such a sad sack, its lyrics are also very hopeful and optimistic.
@impossiblefunky - listen to a track called you are sleeping by PQM , its on deep dish gu025 and hernan cataneo perfecto south america, uses that woman voice sample, excellent stuff, was a big smiths fan bak in the day. you can find both those tunes on youtube too.
I thank Morrissey and The Smiths for making this song and letting all their fans know that they are here for us no matter what. "In the corner of your room, can you hear me?" classic.
@kendallbob I was like that for a year or two, I can't really remember how long...
