  • God! this song is utterly precious!! <3

  • When i start listening to The Smiths, they're all I feel like listening to for quite a while.

  • this is one of the better smiths songs i think

  • @Stratman389 are you seriously implying there's a bad Smith's song?

  • @RSJuggo3

Nah. If he really meant it he'd be a human eggplant.

    Or, worse, a Nickelback fan.

  • you are sleeping, you do not want to believe!

    love that part lol

  • @MrLegobuilder47 same, sounds like the fucking queen haha

  • Shelagh Delaney RIP

  • This song is perfection in every way

  • Fucking hell this song is too good.

  • @cutandpaste1 really?????

  • hear my voice in your head and think of me kindly

  • 6 people are sleeping. They do not want to believe.

  • i wish i was born in the 60's or 70's or something, ahhh i fucking hate kesha and all that radio shit, i know that there are great bands now too but aahh nothing compares to this <3

  • i list to the smiths the cure joy division on a daily bases! haha dad u tought me well. <:D

  • have not heard this song in about 20 years. still knew every word... guess i DO still love you like i used to ;)

  • @peppersagooddog Halarious! what a cool post :) glad your back!

  • Schumi and senna ? lol

  • @03iamhopeless sorry to bother u but i am really curious what about schumi and senna u mean the drivers.

  • @radioclash84 yeah, they had a fight off track. i think in 1992. in every single vid of their fight or call it argument you can hear the song.

  • @03iamhopeless LOOOOOOOOOOL

  • best smits song ever (and i really love a plenty of them)

  • Either the room just got colder or this song is giving me the shivers

  • I'm in love...

  • Oh man I love this song!

But what does "rubber ring"referes to in this context?

It's ages I was wondering about this...:-)well I'm not English.

  • @fliesenfuzzi I think the 'rubber ring' is simply the rubber ring that you'd wear when you can't swim and you go into a swimming pool or the sea, to keep you afloat. So I think Morrissey means that the songs that you hold on to that saved your life are your own 'rubber ring'.

  • @jayjay301269 Oh shit I thought Rubber Ring meant condoms, don't know why, I just think of that that.

  • How sad- Youtube's Speed Date ad on the top right of this song/video.

  • love the little sample "everybody's got an idea?"

  • @00000itsjustme "everybody's clever nowadays" :)

  • @martynblackburn1977 perfect soundtrack to asuperiority complex.

  • I'm sure everyone relates to this song in a different way, brilliant.

  • One of their most under appreciated songs, right up there with I dont owe you anything, that joke isn't funny anymore, well I wonder and this night has opened my eyes..

  • My I-pod is not complete without The Smiths:)

I love how no matter how your feeling, what your feeling or what just happened in your life. Morrissey has written a beautiful piece of art that just covers each and every thing perfectly as if he knows you, I love that about the smiths no other band has ever made me feel like that:)

  • hey morrisey...i hear your voice in my head, and i think of you kindly.

  • @MMAC0RE Their covers, and death at one's elbow are usually cited as the weakest songs

  • That fucking bassline, man...

  • the music, the voice, the lyrics...what music gods they were!!

  • Pathing of time

  • the intro to this song sounds like the music of a late 80s early 90s crime TV programme

  • i have to say that this is the best smiths song ever, lyrically incredible and musically the tightest and most perfect execution of songwriting

  • @ThePellerhead I don't know, How soon is now? is pretty good too

  • The best song of all times.Morrissey is a genius.......

  • 6 people are sleeping. They do not want to believe.

  • This song is amazing, I cant believe this is my first time hearing it. O__O

  • When you lay in awe

    On the bedroom floor

And said : oh, whoa, smother me mother

it's amazing how he articulates with word to describe things like being suicidal.. when i hear this i think i can't wait i'm finally living

  • I am the ultimate smiths fan, but i had never heard this song more than 2 times before today... it's memorized...

  • your songs saved my life...and, yes, i love you like i used to

  • i like the song, they're great,

what does that weird voice say at 3:05?

  • @MrGt514 "You're clever. Everybody's clever now these days.".

  • @ThatChurchill Everybody's clever nowadays. Not now these days.

  • Comment removed

  • Hi i'm 14 and i don't listen to auto-tuned shit all day :)

  • @WPskates good for you

  • when we are in love and happy we tend to forget about the songs that got us thru the tough and lonely times

  • kuodos to the young man

  • Everybody is clever nowadays?

  • I wonder if Rubber Ring was inspired by an indentation left around his cock by a condom after gay sex? I still think it's a great song even if he is gay, which I'm fairly sure he is.

  • Here's to The Family, wherever you are (whatever you are)

  • When i listen to the Smiths (or to an extent Joy division) for a long amount of time everything else just sounds like noise and only the Smiths sound like music.

  • Yeah, I mean, seriously...the best that ever was.

  • They weren't capable of writing a bad song.

  • @Ihatethisugh1 LOL. Simply the best description of The Smiths I´ve heard.

  • @Ihatethisugh1 Meat is Murder

  • you are 3 things

  • This is not VEVO so why do ads keep popping up? If I wanted a certain product, I'd look in a freakin directory or around me where I'm bombarded by every form of advertising out there (credit messages in the sky, waste of gas).

This is MUSIC. Keep the ads out and listen to HIS messages. You don't like what Mozzer has to say then keep away from his stuff, simples!! Don't deflect from the music, please!!

  • @aniolku25 Adverts keep youtube free.

  • In a parallel universe The Smiths are still making music.

  • this is music!!!not the pathtic vulgarities that pass as music nowadays.

  • Nobody has captured nostalgia like this.

  • @johnnyvicious2 Except the Chameleons, check them out..

  • @Soulinisolation1 Agreed; good call.

  • Yes......I'm listening to you now.....and I still love you

  • COM CERTEZA ESSA CANÇÃO RESUME MUITO DE NOSSA RELAÇÃO COM A BANDA!

    UMA DAS MINHAS FAVORITAS!

    LETRA FUDIDÍSSIMAAAAAAAAA

  • Morrissey is english Morrison ,both legendary and cultic

  • @naconazov1 Morrison? Jim Morrison? That's an insult to Mozza.

  • @gav1np I am realy sorry you doesnt find morrison to be a legendary one

  • @gav1np Okay, there is really no point in comparing Morrison and Morrissey, but the comparison being an insult to Mozzer? C'mon, you've probably never heard a Doors song in your life. Morrison was a goddam genius.

  • @HeadfulOfHollow Morrison was stoned.

  • @adamtzsch Syd Barrett? John Lennon? Keith Richards? And even now, Brett Anderson or Pete Doherty? Do you realise that your argument is really... laughable?

  • @HeadfulOfHollow I realise Morrison was stoned.

  • yeah all i listen to is The Smiths and sometimes ill listen something else but nothing else really speaks to me like the smiths

  • I will always think of you kindly, sir.

  • 4 people are wearing rubber rings

  • love the smiths since early eighties .. fuck me am old . hahaha

  • And when you're, dancing, and laughing, and finally living, hear my voice in your head and think of me kindly...

  • an amazing work of art

    long live the morrissey!

  • Love it so much. Damn

  • powerful song

  • 3 people who couldn't find their arses with 2 hands seem to have landed on this video

  • I love this song too much.

    His voice is so relaxing.

  • man this song is groovey! im glad im finally getting into mozz :)

  • The DRUMMING in this song is Amazing!!!!

    hear-my-voice-in-your-head-and-think-of-me-kindly....

  • best band ever!!!

  • @murraythe i like!!!

  • @LukeRoby1994 very good song

  • This Song made me cry

  • This is with out question one of the very best lyrics Morrissey ever wrote... Marr composed a killer tune here... The Smiths synergy is evident here. This was one of the songs i used to feel was my very own.....nothing has changed with the passing of time.

  • LIke so many Smiths masterpieces, this was originally a B-side. Just shows how great that band were.

  • These are the songs that make ME smile :)

  • I say, they made really good use of samples and soundbites in some of their songs. I think the only other band to do that back in the 80's was Big Audio Dynamite.

  • Does anyone actually hear him sing "rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring" or is he saying "LaDaDay, LaDaDay..."?

  • @MorrisseyOner Bit of both I recon

  • @MorrisseyOner he does sing rubber ring the literal lyric is ooooowowoww rubber ring rubber ring rubber ring rubber ring.

  • And when you're dancing and laughing

    And finally living

Hear my voice in your head

    And think of me kindly

    I always do, Morrissey.

  • Fortunately i first discover the Smiths when i was twelve and fell completely in love with them... during my teenage i didn't have any friends, only them.

Now that i'm seventeen their lyrics have the same effect in my life that the they used to...

  • @sigurros16 Except now, I hope you've made a few friends :)

  • Finally realized why it's named "Rubber Ring"

  • @NinetiesYouth why?

  • @ilovewoofy The ring is metaphorical for marriage and it's rubber because he's speaking as if the fans are married to him and now they're loosely connected or not as authentic fans as they used to be.

Great work by Marr, as usual

  • @NinetiesYouth wow thanks its makes perfect sense! so marr wrote this?

  • @NinetiesYouth A rubber ring is a lifesaver at sea as well, I thought it was him saying music (maybe particularly his) is exactly that

  • Comment removed

  • @ChrisWales22 "and the songs that saved your life" Guess you're right man

  • @ChrisWales22

Rubber Ring is a 45/single/record. vinyl = rubber for the purpose of this song.

  • @JS13 Never knew that - after 20-odd years I'll listen to this song with new eyes! lol

  • @JS13 its also a condom...i think thats the meaning it takes in this song for somereason but thats prob just me

  • A friend had given me this album at a time when I was in a particularly dark place in my life. I'd decided I needed to think some things over and - don't ask - had taken an acid blotter by myself in my appartment, listening to this. It is the closest I've gotten to a genuine religious experience, like I was lifted up out of normal time, into something one might term 'mythic' time. Imagine the sublime shock I felt hearing the 'You are sleeping...' bit at the end. Mozza gave me back my humanity.

  • "you are sleeping

you do not want to believe

    you are sleeping"

  • one of the most underrated and clever songs that the Smiths (and Morrissey) ever wrote. and despite Mozzer's reputation for being such a sad sack, its lyrics are also very hopeful and optimistic.

  • @tsartodd Yes so much Ironic humour in them as well.

  • So hard to choose, but this would have to be close to my favourite Smiths song. The lyrics...

  • silly people of today when all they really need to do is to hear this song to see that music really meant something once.

  • How can I not love a band that writes a song for my future self?

  • "But dont forget the songs

    That made you cry

And the songs that saved your life

    Yes, youre older now

    And youre a clever swine

But they were the only ones who ever stood by you"

It's amazing how this song can be the very thing it's about.

  • You are sleeping.

  • @impossiblefunky - listen to a track called you are sleeping by PQM , its on deep dish gu025 and hernan cataneo perfecto south america, uses that woman voice sample, excellent stuff, was a big smiths fan bak in the day. you can find both those tunes on youtube too.

  • does he actually say "rubber ring" in the chorus, i think he just says "la la la"..etc...

  • Thanks for put the lyrics in the info...

    Do it always.

  • I thank Morrissey and The Smiths for making this song and letting all their fans know that they are here for us no matter what. "In the corner of your room, can you hear me?" classic.

  • To be honest all I listen to right now is The Smiths. For a few weeks its been like it.. It's just been The Smiths.. And sometimes just Morrissey.

  • Thats how I was last week, except it was The Clash....this is my sixth Smiths/Morrisey song in a row tonight.

  • ikr? I'm sorry to anyone who disagrees but this is the best band I have ever heard, It's just the most amazing music to ever pass my ears.

  • @kendallbob I was like that for a year or two, I can't really remember how long... I just couldn't listen to any other artists as they all seemed so shit compared to The Smiths, and I'm talking about great great great bands like Sparks and all! Everytime I listen to The Smiths it just feels like reading my diary, or in fact it feels like some charming man is singing my diary, it just blows me away, it still does, it still does...

  • @kendallbob You sound like me, 20 years ago. And I still sound like that. So be careful.

  • @kendallbob EXACTLY!!!!!!

  • 1.The smiths

    2.The smiths

    3.The smiths.

And then there's the clash, the ramones, the sex pistols and pulp.

I'm 13. I get laughed at but ah well, Moz never let's us down (:

  • @sheilatakeabow1990,

Don't give a crap who laughs at you, though I'm sure you don't. You have great music taste!!!

  • @sheilatakeabow1990 nobody cares how fucking old you are

  • @angusstan Oh I don't give a shit I wrote it ages ago, get over it.

  • @angusstan I saw one comment on a video that made me laugh that said 'I'm a feotus and I listen to this music'. It may have been cute at first, but it's getting old now. Also, 1990 would probably suggest you're more like 21!

  • @Soulinisolation1 i wasnt stating how old i was dipshit

  • @angusstan I know, I was on about Sheila take a bow. sorry, confusing use of language, I meant them not you. Just bored of all the 'I'm 10 and I like The Smiths' and all that

  • @Soulinisolation1 yeh i know, i mean just because they listen to the smiths doesnt mean they have to go around stating how old they are like some boy scout, and sorry for calling you a dipshit :)

  • @angusstan Haha, it's alright..my mistake! not as annoying as the '10 people think there isn't a light that never goes out' and similar on the number of dislikes or bringing Justin Bieber into it or just slanging matches. There's something to be said for banning comments I reckon!

  • @Soulinisolation1 I'm actually 14, I just needed numbers for the end of my username. And to be fair, this was a while ago. I wasn't doing it for "likes" or to be "cool", I just wanted to leave a comment and I can't even remember when I actually did it. I'm just bloody sick of people leaving me comments and insulting me, because it's not particularly nice to log on and see it, especially over something I completely forgot about posting. (Sorry for the rant.)

  • @sheilatakeabow1990 I wasn't having a go at you personally, it's just that you see a lot of 'I'm only so old and I listen to this' stuff on youtube. Don't get me wrong, being a 14 year old Smiths fan is great. I was one once, I think I was in a bad mood with youtube at the time...sorry, nothing personal!

  • @sheilatakeabow1990

dude that is cool as hell that you are into Morrissey and the Smiths, and you are only 13!!!

  • @sheilatakeabow1990 i get laughed at 2 firend im 13 drums and my mate who loves the smiths to plays guitar as youve guessed where in a band
