Mentzer did look good but not as good as some will have you believe. i respect some of Mentzers views about training and even 1980 Olympia but people take it too far.
also menzter placed 5th, not 2nd so your arguement that menzter should have won has nothing to stand on. even if arnold didn't win there were others in the line up better than him(still including arnold)....and hypothetically if arnold didn;t win the lowest he should have gotten would be 2nd)...arnold was better than the rest even at his weakest...he still had better symmetry than many on that stage. zane was skinny, boyer coe was too squatty like menzter, roger walker looked good but still lack
@SergioCalcio putting personal opinions aside,the judging for BB competitions are heavy on politics. Read Sergio Oliva's interview with Brian Johnston. Oliva,close friends of Zane said that Zane knew he shouldnt have won against Mentzer in 1979.We all love Arnold, he is charismatic n IMO the best BB ever but be real. No way in hell Arnold n Colombu could win 80 n 81 without politics

Should Arnold have won? No. This is why your friends cannot be judges in a competition. Whether or not Mentzer should have won, is opinion. But he IS the one who stood up for what he believed, called bullshit, and walked away. I applaud him for that. There is a LOT of speculation to Arnold's involvement in this competition. In any case, it pretty much ended the "Golden Days" of Bodybuilding on a shady note.

It's true Arnold was only about 75 percent compared to his peak in 1974, but bodybuilding isn't about how you look compared to your peak. Bodybuilding is all about looking better than the competition and Arnold at only 75% still looked better than all of them. all guys on stage that night had flaws. and mike menzter placed 5th(not 2nd) so don't give me that crap he should have won. arnold was better.
@shadowknight132 knowing judges on a personal level doesn't equate to cheating if that's what you were getting at. the only judge that Arnold knew really well was Bill Pearl Bill. Pearl was supposed to be head judge but declined as he had helped Chris Dickerson prepare for the contest, so in the end he didn't get any favoritism from Bill Pearl because he didn't judge. As for the rest of the judges, Arnold did know a few on some level and perhaps schmoozed with them a bit, but he didn't cheat.

@tj73uk i think the same thing, what the hell has bodybuilding turned into nowadays? back in the golden age of the 60's to mid 80's bodybuilders had the physiques of what you see in greco roman/renaissance art and judging by the fact that those guys used way less steroids that they must have had the best genetics to look the way they did. Today's pros use a ton more anabolics and they use alot of things not available in arnolds day. To me it seems that this overuse compensates for poorer genes.

Tom Platz reminds me of Kai Greene today. Tom was so wound up in bodybuilding he couldn't see outside of himself. Not that there is anything wrong with being philisophical. Frankly I believe Tom Platz took himself to seriously, and I believe thats why he never won the big show, and the sad thing is he could have. greene could be the next Coleman, i think he needs to lighten up. @zmjohnston i'm not so sure tom couldn't have won before lee haney. Who knows were his body would have been if he'd loosened up? Personally i believe platz's real flaw was his presentation especially during his free posing.
