xD I loved it when Domingo played scales on the piano (albeit a very flat scale), and Pavarotti sang along. He actually is pretty good at the piano; I've heard him accompany himself several times.

Pavarotti didn't just sing Opera. He blended with it. He made it part of him. If you have read "Pavarotti:My World" by Pavarotti and Wright, you will know what I am talking about. Also, Pavarotti didn't just sing Opera and locked himself there. He was determined to break the barriers of music, mixing himself with other great singers from other genres:Pop, Rock. I mean everything. He sang with Queen's Brian May, U2, Celine Dion, Spice Girls, Sting, Frank Sinatra, Jon Bon Jovi,. He was wonderful!!

Opera is not a show and has a very specials features which distinguish to the other arts, then opera in order to fully appreciate it require certain places and sonority, etc, Opera houses do not exist for cities decorations, I see a good intention on the 3 tenors but they knew that that intention covers the real reason behind, 1 o 2millions dollars benefit.
I see nothing wrong with open air concerts, the music is exceptional, why should only those with the money to buy a seat at The Met get to listen to the singers interpreting the composer's music?
And this concert (1990) was purely to celebrate Carreras's recovery, they had no idea that the records/ticket sales would amass to the huge amounts of money they did.
The 1994 was more commercial, which is actually why Pavarotti didn't want to do it when Carreras/Domingo were very keen to do another.

I would not be incline to say there were the greatest tenors, there were asome of them who gathered together to make their pockets a bit more fuller with a few millions dollars and involve here the excuse we wanna bring opera to everyone and money to our private accounts, I am in favour of concerts but this is just too repetitve repertory.
My love to opera started to develop in 1993 when I heard Pavarotti performing in Central Park in front of half a million people. In that time I knew nothing about opera but this concert that was broadcasted on TV, which does not happen so often with opera performances from opera houses, and I was numbed by Pavarotti's voice.
Today he is still my favorite tenor, I know more about opera then 17 years ago, I listen to other opera artists as well, I have a collection of opera Cd's and Dvd's, and read about opera whenever I can. So, that mass performance brought me to opera and even if it was all about getting just one young man to this beautiful art through this kind of presentation, it worked very well.
I also don't understand what you mean by the word ''show'' ? I guess you call this a show ? Here we have three great voices singing great music. Great voices don't come so often, just like great music. For me it would be ''show'' if you have some third class singers performing third class music, or even worse, great music, with great publicty behind it. Sure, this is not operatic performance and it's to obvious but it can bring people to opera houses.
I remember Pavarotti talking about his childhooh and listening to Gigli's concert in his hometown square. So, this kind of presenting opera is not from our days. After all, you have Caruso who in his own time enjoyed great popularity just like Pavarotti does today. Finally, in the 19th centiry in Itlay opera was not elitistc art as some people liike Kraus probably consider it, but famililar to wider masses of people. In his time Verdi was a great star.
By the way, I think Kraus was probably jelaous on Pavarotti for their repertoire matched in some sense and Pavarotti was better the him (Duke, Tonio ...). I saw Kraus performing this kind of ''shows'' as well, which means singing opera music outside opera houses but he was never able to sing in front 150000, 300000 or 500000 people like Pavarotti did. Why ? Because Pavarotti was better and more people appreciated him then Kraus.
@castorp278 Im a big opera fan, also i haved to study a lot. And one thing is sure, Kraus wasnt jelaous. Kraus doesnt like the ''masive'' performance... Be cause he was a purist of the opera... The purist doesnt like the microphones, the big sounds, i mean... They sing just in a Teatro with the Orquesta without a extra sound then his or her voices.

Once he sang Vesti la giubba and Di quella pira... But in a studio recording. Im a big big fan of Jose Carreras... And Jose Carreras sang all the things than pasioned him... Kraus was more tecnique... But he wasnt Jelous... He was just purist. =D
P.S. I guess every opera opera singer would die for to sing in front of so many people and get so many approval as Pavarotti did. And it does not happen so often, especially in opera, maybe 2 or three time in a century and that's why it's precious. Kraus was just being a jelaous hypocrite here, that's all.
@Mooorhe It was this decade that opera singers became the new rock stars. I must admit, although I was occassionally listening to operatic arias before, it was not after the 1994 three tenors concert that made me look at the genre seriously. And Maestro Pavarotti was right - music is made for the people. And if opera became the new pop music then by all means, celebrate it! We have to acknowledge these three gentlemen for opening us rockers to opera.

I wonder how much they got paid per concert, they did sing so many. I once read they got paid 2 millions dollors for the one in 1994. Anyone knows?
