  • What rubs me the wrong way about this version is that Matthew Broderick does not come off as the fast-talking traveling salesman type. He has the same delivery as when playing the timid, neurotic Leo Bloom. It just does not work on any level. The only aspects of this movie that exceed the 1962 film version is Kristin Chenoweth, and it was shot like a movie instead of the typical post-war Hollywood musical.

  • This version of the music man sucks! The original is much better. Mathew Broderick just isn't charming and convincing as a smooth talking salesman. :(

  • why is that black guy in here? He should be slaving away on the plantations.

  • I've heard of this movie- it looks fun!

  • Like this if you were raised in River City (now Mason City) (:

  • i love Kristin. my homie!

  • this is okay i guess but i feel like the orginal is wayyyy better

  • Check out 3:13 - 3:22 (it's just a couple of flashes). Card player to the right on the screen is a CGI enhanced Robert Preston double. I can't get it to stop just right, but if you watch carefully, you can see where they touched up. He shows up in a few frames. Cool. sf

  • I played Prof Hill in my high school play years ago. I love this play and movie!!

  • My drama club is doing this play

  • haha i was in this play

  • he's just a bang-beat, bell-ring'n, big-haul, great- go, neck-or-nothin, rip-roar'n, ev'ry time-a-bull's-eye salesman. that professor harold hill, harold hill,

  • I never understood this song

  • wooo hoo bitchis i am in this play

  • The way Matthew Broderick played Professor Harold Hill in this film he couldn't have interested Gabriel with a horn. Not only was the 1962 version better, it was clearly the definitive Hollywood solution to the Meredith Wilson musical.

  • doo doodoo doo doo inspector gadget...

  • I didn't know Victor Garber was in this movie! Dude!

  • im in this play at my school as jacey squiers and charlie cowell!

  • I looove this play

  • I loved doing this show at CYT!!! It was soooo fun doing this scene!

  • whaddaya talk guy is not nearly as good as the original

  • @cracksnappleprop52 i agree, he is quite anoying here

  • 31 people don't know the territory!!!

  • It's Harold from Red Green! ^.^ and omp this song is soooo irritating!!!

  • This movie's pretty good, although the first is 100 times more better than this. Just saying. ;)

  • i'm sorry but this opening scene SUCKS compared to the origional. the guy who says whadda talk is so far from the voice of the 1st guy. still a good movie though

  • I'm trying out for this musical in the fall! I'm so excited. I had never heard of it until a little while ago, but I love the songs I've heard.

    Does anyone have any tips?

  • BUT HE DOESN'T KNOW THE TERRITORY!!!

  • i have 2 sing or a double boiler in wells fargo wagon so high piched :p

  • OMG, the Hollywood musical's gone multiracial

  • Shirley Jones was an amazingly young looking women in this film.

  • 363 people know the territory but 31 are over looking the territory.

  • I dunno, but for 1902 River City, Iowa is an awfully well-integrated society.

  • I really like the 1962 version better :/

  • Their pacing on Rock Island is sloppy. There's got to be super clear beginnings and ends to words in this song, they're being waaay too indulgent.

  • I LOVE Music Man and is going to be in it!!!!!!! and and THANK YOU FOR PUTTING IT ON!!!!!!

  • this is catchy as hell.

  • I really don't like Matthew Broderick's take on Harold Hill...Harold Hill is supposed to be super confident...you know, like a good salesman throwing a pitch... but all of the Harold Hill songs in this version just feel awkward. The rest of the cast is great though.

  • the original was better:/

  • @GlitteryandGirly I wish we could have the cast and technology of the new one, but still have Robert Preston as Harold Hill. I felt that the cast for this one is a lot better than the original...but Matt Broderick seems awkward as Hill.

  • WHO KNOWS THE TERRITORY??!!

  • How Awesome it would be if everyone could just break out into song ^_^ aww yes my world everyone would bust out into songs and music

  • I have never seen this music, so thanks for the upload. It's about time I do! I love Musicals but yet haven't seen this movie... geez. that shall change now ^_^

  • Oh my gosh, I LOVE THE MUSIC MAN!!! This is so great...they aren't even singing! It's all about the rhythm...so awesome! :)

  • RYAN STYLES FTW!

  • no one here knows the original?!?!?!?!? WTF!

  • These plays phantom of the opera Romeo and juliet Greece the music man new York new York they're all so hard to understand when they sing or speak but it's totally worth it :)

  • AHHHH i hate this song

  • i wish they had the other version

  • @AnimationEmpire1 I'm doing this musical and I got Harold!!

  • i watch this in my bad class 5 years ago an i love it

  • My highschool is performing this for a school play and im running the lights. I could sing along to almost every word in this scene :D

  • My mother played Mrs. Schinn in our local production back in the late 70's early 80's. What a hoot, I love this play!

  • i like the 1962 version better

  • I'm Watching this in music class so i had to here it again

  • my drama club did this last year this year we did hairspary

  • My High School Drama club is doing this play right now, and we're gonna be on the news Thursday morning. I think its channel 9... I'm not in the play, I'm in tech crew.

  • I'm a band kid! My Dad is voice #8 in Wells Fargo Wagon! I'm so proud!

  • @textlover321 Wait, what part did he sing/ talk?

  • @SweeneyToddGal Haha I don't remember at all it was 8 months ago :)

  • my school is putting on the JR version of this and I play Charlie Cowell!

  • @MrJTShow Hey my school is doing the Jr. version too! I am a pick a little lady. My boyfriend is Marcellus.

  • @SnoeConeBaby Ethel Toffelmier?

  • @MrJTShow we're doing the jr version too. i'm Oliver Hix

  • @MrJTShow I play several parts! I;m doing the JR version!

  • @Born2Sing26 my schools doing a junior version to. I might see it.

  • My school just put the jr version of this on! For a middle school, it was pretty good! I was Marian! :D I'll have it up in a while if anyone wants yo check it out.

  • God..I love the con man. Only in the musical on my school-field trip. It was so awesome i want to go see it everyday!!!! I love this movie. Thumbs up!

  • They actually did the whole train scene, but there was a reason it was cut in the other version...because it doesn't work well. They kinda lost the meaning behind this scene in this version.

  • My school just put on this musical! It's was so cute! Now lets watch the really thing ^.^

  • love this movie

  • Yep, that was Patric McKenna from the Red Green show. He has done a tone of stuff on the Sci-Fi channel as well, like stargate

  • Hey, is the anvil salesman Harold from Red Green? That would be hilarious!

  • @Deuteronomy1813 it is him! looked it up on IMDB.com

  • @Deuteronomy1813 Yep. And I agree.

  • @Deuteronomy1813 i think he kinda looks like Dr. octopus from spiderman

  • 26 people don't know the territory !

  • Bwahahaha!! I was the black dude's role when I did this...~

  • i find this version easy to understand the orininal is so fast and quick you can't understand it

  • Hey the guy at 2:37 is the elevator man who doesn't talk in Eloise at Christmastime!

(that is the only thing I got out of watching this... fail. Nothing compares to the 1962 version!)

  • This is my skools play.

  • HA black people didn't have any cash back in 1912.

  • I didn't know kristin chenoweth would be in this. And this is kind of like rapping!

  • Ehhhh. . . . I watched the Rock Island part repeatedly over and over again in the Robert Preston ver. . . but watching this actually annoyed me at the poor singing. That's just my opinion but this version really strays far from the Musical stage origins,

  • This was terrible, I had to do it in a play one time, and it sucked

  • @morewhitethanu but when done right it sounds soooooooo cool

  • now, THAT is what I call old school rap!

  • Wow. I'm one of those salesman in my school play of this. I am screwed. I stumble over words all the time.

  • shipoopi! shipoopi! the girl thats hard to get.

  • I am plying harold hill in my school plat

  • The different choices are interesting. In the first number, the 1962 film went for a much more stylized and overtly rythmical delivery--more like the stage show, where they can't cut to clips of the train to explain the joke--but this one plays the lines more naturalistically, so they echo the train rather than evoking it. But then, these guys are in a pure fantasy of a train car--I've seen private "executive cars" that were less luxurious. No salesman traveled like that!

  • Woohoo--it's "spot the Canadian actors" time!

  • This version's better, that version's better, know what? My school did this play, and I think it's my favorite version! However, no one recorded that, so this will work just as well. =) Thanks for posting it CA!

  • 24 people don't know the territory.

  • I'm just gonna say it: That black guy is really cool. He really worked Rock Island.

  • what the f***

  • Im doing this show and I play Charlie and this is my favorite scene that Im in!!

  • @broadwaysuperstar30 Charlie's my favorite character!

  • im Playing charlie and im kinda scared about scene 13 haha

  • i love this movei

  • @eastsideev that is not how u spell it and u need to not being a be showoff about it. Some people dont like that. Plus, it is not nice.

  • I'll say this, merely as comment (seeing the original and this): to put a dialogue to the transition of the acceleration of a steam locomotive is impressive. Plus, Mr. Broderick did the character very well. I mean, c'mon: It's not even "Africa hot". =^.^=

  • my school did this play and i was in it, it was soo much fun i loved it

  • i dont get y they have to repeat the word they say 100000000 times

  • 1962 version wins hands down. I wanted to look for the opening walk down mainstreet to give an example of music merging with film dialogue. I checked this out hoping it would be just as good... no chance.

  • My school is doing this play!!! We saw the 1962 one and it was really really REALLY good.

  • I got a Music Man craving, so do I watch this or the DVD of my school's performance?

  • i always just enjoyed the singing voices in this one more. Thats just me.

  • I like the 1962 version better but I still absolutely adore Matthew Broderick and Kristen Chenoweth <3

  • the 1962 one had beter actors and scenes

  • i just noticed, the 1st stop is supposed to be Brighton, IL., NOT River city as indicated on the water tank. They're supposed to be going to not leaving River City!

  • thanks for posting! is it bad that the only reason why im interested in seeing this because krisitn chenoweth is in it? lol

  • THIS ISN'T REAL LIFE.

    WOW THANK YOU.

US THEATER GEEKS LOVE YOU. ♥

  • What is the name of that anvil salesman? He reminds me of Harold from Red Green and that one scientist from SG-1 that was a screw-up.

  • @0000infinity0000 his name in the movies Charlie Cowwel i dont know who plays him though sorry

  • i love how wen theyre all sayin "hill?", hill himself says it too

  • Ha, I love this version, we watched it in Choir class when I was still in Middle School..

  • @RuukahRedtail thats exactly where i found it xD ever sense then i couldnt get this beat outa my head until i finnaly went to look up on youtube for it x3 im in sixth grade choir at my school and were pretty advanced but the 1962 was better....

  • the black guy sucks

  • the old one was WAY better!!!!!!!!

  • this ought to be interesting. I have the 1962 VHS at home.

isn't that Charlie guy Hank from Red and Green show? (for fellow Canadians out there)

just recently i've become a Kristin Chenoweth fan, so this is something I wanna see.

  • Mathew broderick and Kristin Chenowith are just great in this movie. I mean Mathew has a lot of charm and kristin has such a beautiful voice. I think this version is better than the original one. btw, I hope to see more from Mathew, he is so awesome.

  • the 1962 was better because the actors were practically booming with energy. that wasn't nearly as present here. they didn't need the musical accompaniment.

  • quality seems fine to me :D dont worry bout it :)

  • 4:04 That poor guy. He played a scientist on SG-1. Even on that show I felt sorry for him.

  • i love the beginning song sooooooo much!!!!

  • I wanna watch the original... :(

  • Charlie Cowell was an asshole. (Sorry... I always wanted to say that.)

Has anyone actually seen a broadway musical that had the same pacing in the film as it did on the stage? I've seen good Hollywood Musicals, but I've never seen a Broadway musical really adapted for screen with Broadway vibrance... Maybe Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is the exception.... Rock Island is a good example... without all the cameras and the pans the rhythm and tension build way better ! ! !

  • I feel like this version doesn't use the sounds of the train as effectively as the Robert Preston version.

  • i just finished this play with byt it was tons of fun!!!

  • @kewlgirl100 that's awesome! I just auditoned for this two days ago and I got call backs for Zaneeta!!!! I am soooo excited! SO i'm glad to hear it was tons of fun(:

  • My School's Currently Performing This Musical. I'm Playing Marian :] Opening Night Was On April 16. We Got Two More Shows!

  • @KitKat12598 mine just finished it up... wierd. aha

  • My school is doing this musical! Last night was opening night and I'm going to see it tonight.

  • @NumOneJoeJonasLuver That's weird...same with MY school. My brother is a saleperson dude.

  • WHY'D HE SPIT?

  • wer doin this musical now in school and wen we do Rock Island thers no orchestra or even a drum beat on the percusiion to keep th beat.

  • my school performed this and it was great loved it

  • lol last year my tap group danced to this at our comptitions

  • My high school did this and the men had more range than these gentlemen have. But then I went to school that people like Steven Speilberg and Lynda Carter graduated from. A public School but with lots of talent.

  • @dm5401 was it hemfeild high school cu zi watch it and it was great!

  • its AWSOME!!!

  • The 1962 was SO much better.

  • i agree... this ones not that good.

  • @FableofLife You can never beat the original !!!!!

  • @FableofLife It depends, really. this was the first one I ever saw, so I personally like this one better. But, you can't beat classics so I see your point.

  • @FableofLife i think they are different but the age difference in this movie is less it looks more normal

  • @FableofLife

Shirley Jones, need I say more?

  • @FableofLife the original was definatley better :))

  • @FableofLife Ulsey the 1st ones are way better look at The Karate Kid the new one is not as good as the old ones the best is 1 then 2 then 3 then 5 then 4

  • @FableofLife sure was if your going to remake a movie make sure it's going to be way better.. smh

  • I went to see this play at my school todays ago they did such a good job buh i thought they did better than this i love to watch this lol

  • Patrick McKenna (Charlie the anvil salesman) is awesome. He's almost as awesome in this as in Red Green. :D

  • I wish my arguments where musical like this one. They would be MUCH longer AND entertaining.

  • @KingGekko Lol i know its so cool

  • Matthew Broderick is a good actor, but a charismatic con man he is not.

  • it pisses me off that they added parts to the actual song, and they all sound like they're acting. you can't even compare it to the original

  • I think the art direction is too subdued. Too lackluster and ordinary. It's a MUSICAL. Give me the heightened, stylized look. Who wants reality when it comes to musical theater from this era?? It's not Les Miz, fercrissake!

  • Chenowith is way over the top in this production, to the point of being annoying.

  • What a great art direction... costume wise is absolutely closer to those year than the old one (it was very hollywoodish) not to mention the reconstruction, so detailed and not theatrical at all ! Plus the color schemes of the photography is not all over the place, has limited palette. The sound quality is very clear (wow wonder who the conductor is! He sees every note).

  • 2:00 that guy is the only person that seems to put energy into it. The others just say it without acting

  • I like both. But yes, the original is above this.

But Cheno is a million kinds of amazing.

  • Nice try but not even close to the original movie. Robert Prestin IS the Misic Man, this fails.

  • It doesn't fail. It's very good. It's just not as good as the original. Doesn't have to beat the original to be good.

  • the beginning is so cool! i love how they talk so fast!

  • Whatayatalk? Whatayatalk? Whatayatalk? :)

  • They're just different. I don't think that one is necessarily better than the other. The original doesn't have the orchestra accompaniment. And they just had a different set. You can have this same argument with "The Producers" which Matthew Broderick was also in. Just depends on what you like.

  • its alot like the original and newer annie movies. they're both good but different

  • I have to disagree. This version has some serious issues with it. Firstly, there should be no music here. Next there is the fact that several of the numbers are taken in the wrong key, Also, in general Matthew Broderick is about as interesting to watch as a pile of wet cardboard boxes, it's like watching someone do the musical with a Ken Doll. Also the guy playing Mayor Shin tries to make him evil, and he's not, he's just a bumbling fool. Artistic license is one thing, but this one stinks.

  • @Teladian

Just one defense, originally this scene DID have accompaniment when on tryout in 1957, but it worked much better without the orchestra.
