I recommend watching macross, its got a great plot and has a great soundtrack aswell, and is really enjoyable

Take to mind that there's more than one type of writing in Japanese; it's not like English, with just our one concrete alphabet. There's +hiragana, katakana, and kanji+ in Japanese. Hiragana is used to spell Japanese words and the like, whereas katakana is used to spell words that are borrowed from other languages. "きら（kira）" in hiragana means sparkle, and "キラ（kira）" in katakana is the English word, "killer."
