  • Me and my mum and brother were singing this while waiting for the plane at london.new york jfk. Las vegas vegas again and atlanta great song love it

  • Lol, I hate this fucking song. Not because its bad, not becaue its sappy; because... well fuck it.

  • so pretty sad song @AmericanMilitary

  • My wife kissed me. That was the last time I ever held her

  • RIP, John, We miss you.....

  • i am always playing this music because I just arrived three weeks here in Barcelona,im million miles away from my friends and idols,i can say that co'z i'm just 14 years old,,. easy to get lonely,i'm just a happy-go-lucky later but now i became a loner,.. :'(

  • How ironic that John Denver should die in a plane crash.......

  • possum - flying a Lancaster Bomber returning from a raid., he was almost over the channel when he was shot. Plane came home, he didn't. The skin of his aircraft was covered with jute, heavy carpet backing, because they had run out of metal. Churchill's words, "Never before had so many owed so much to so few" is a tribute to the RAF. My Grandad was recalled to active duty in the Royal Navy; my Granny after being bombed out of Glascow, moved to Blackpool. My Dad was 101st ABN and he met my Mum.

  • Thanks for the post.

  • Gee, it seems just like yesterday when I hear this and I was only 20 drafted going to Vietnam and walking up the ramp to my jet plane at Travis AFB California , December 9,1968 not knowing if I would be back ever again. Funny how one song can stimulate your senses and suddenly there is a flood of memories from this beautiful song about a horrible year in the lives of many who went to Nam.

  • @wilcarr1 What a coincidence man, I live literally 5 minutes from Travis AFB. Thanks for your service, I could never empathize how hard it mustve been!

  • @wilcarr1 Thank you for your service. God Bless you and your loved ones.

  • I like the pictures in this that go along with this classic song, the only thing is when he says jet plane...theres pictures of two prop planes. Im anal like that. But overall i like this.

  • @JAYZIGGY5 True, but they're turbo props!

  • @JAYZIGGY5 There is such a thing as Jet prop engines and have been for quite some time. Don't let the prop fool you.

  • @masonsdad45 Well I wasn't trying to get too technical....but I don't think a C-130 with the jet assisted takeoff was what ole John Denver was thinking about when he wrote this. I was more or less kidding, Its not keeping me up at night or anything. =)

  • Although it's great to hop on a jet and quickly get home to our loved ones after completing a deployment, it doesn't always give us enough time to get the fight out of our system as those in WWII did on the long boat ride home. In extreme cases like my cousin's husband Jim - in a couple days he went from the toughest fighting during the Tet Offensive to his home in Vermont in a matter of days - He's been struggling with it ever since - read "Facing the Wall" by his wife Mary. Welcome home Jim!

  • I would just like to say thank you to all the brace men and women who have served and are serving our country. Pol don't realize how much you sacrifice. So thank you.

  • Getting on that plane to Nam was the hardest thing I ever did and I did it twice. How these young troopers do multiple tours is mind boggling. I tip my hat to these young men and women.

  • @diekontrolleure, I actually had not planned on giving you the "joy" of a response because I believe you are just a thrill seeker who has nothing better to do than to sit on your computer looking for people and causes whom you believe you can get a reaction out of. You wrote to mwhi859716 that you were just kidding? well your sense of humor needs some maturing! Bottom line is, you are lucky to live in a country where men & women are willing to sacrifice for your right to say whatever you want!

  • My husband listened to this song on his flight home from Iraq in 2006...So thankful he made it home to me!!!!!!!

  • @dannyj396 your husband is a war criminal! so stfu dont be proud about this, the plane should have crashed

  • I am sure you made this comment to incite people, so I am giving you just what you want. Maybe you should stfu since apparently you can't distinguish between the principle of service to your country and your convictions on the principles that the war is being fought on. I don't agree with either of the conflicts that we are currently in. But these young men did not make the decision for our involvement in either us being in Afghanastan or Iraq. Just be glad there isn't a draft my friend.

  • @mwhi859716 chill out homie i was just kidding

  • So cruel and ironic he had to die in a plane crash

  • @shawngendreau The fuel tank switches were jammed. This is what killed him. His father still holds an absolute speed record set in the early 60s.

  • this song is sooooo touching. i miss my uncle already :...(

  • Perhaps this is the best song ever written and surely the best one ever sung by any human.

  • it almost breaks my heart - the one I love is a pilot, military and private, and this song touches me most of all songs.

  • thank you soldiers.the world would not be in the state its in today without you guys willing to fight

  • Qué rolaaaa!!! qué paradójico que se haya muerto en un avionazo....

  • Love you, Guys I do .. Great job..

  • love you guys..Keith

  • 2 more days till join the army Wish me luck im happy to serve

  • @richard09890 god bless you! :)

good luck, come home safe, my friend!

  • @richard09890 Good luck and God bless!

  • From times long ago.

  • Tarja Merivirta also sings Leaving on a jet plane!

  • when i heard this song its reminds me of my ex foreign bf..last year he left me in a plane wethought sayong good bye,,,and now no more communication with him:=( so sad

  • I just sent added this song to my facebook. I left a my girl in Germany. she is a medical student there and I am in the Army. As I was on leave visiting her last month i kept thinking about this song and how it is like our situation. I miss her and cannot wait to see her again. Thanks to John Denver for making such a great song that I can associate my life to.

  • I told all of my close ones, when I'll die, play only this song in my funeral. And NOTHING else. I'll not forget this is even after my death. And I wanna end my existence in this earth with this song...

  • top song, nice tribute to the brave and fearless serviceman

  • you guys are probably gonna all hate me for this but j.d. told the truth...he left on a plane and never came back... r.i.p.

  • when i left for the air force i sang this song to my girlfriend sadly she sent me a letter while i was in the fourth week of basic and broke up with me

  • @cgerald09 Thanks for your service!..

  • @cskjain no prob. its nice to hear that some are still thankful God Bless You and have a great day

  • @cgerald09 I guess only service members thank each other these days!! 1ID CAB Hooah!

  • @cgerald09 oh thats so sad :(

  • @cgerald09 oh I feel sorry for you and your girlfriend dude

  • @cgerald09 Shit happens man. If it hurts, then regardless of whether you recognize it now or not, it's probably an important growth moment for you. The important thing is to move on.

    Best of luck to you.

  • It's hateful that the ones you love, if they are not here anymore , you can't get them back to say that you love them, or just tell them that they are great people ...

  • My jet for Cam Ranh Bay left 22 April 1970 Yeah Earth Day My contribution to global cooling

  • this song is awsome

  • I Love this song i hope he returned so many poor soldiers dont , And i love John Denver to a Great Singer Love Shirls xx

  • Yes I agree with Anthony13, Mexico and south american countries are so hard on immigrants, while the US gives away the store. world population is 7 billion. 6 billion of them want to go to U.S. Good thing for big ocean

  • British Airways often used this song for some of their advertisments.

  • baby pls come back!!!

  • You might not come back.

  • well done

  • I love this song I've done this in my play

  • Be The Change by Paper Plane Factory

Hear it !!! You will not regret it !!!

    a dainsh band

  • My baby girl Nishat... I will miss you so...

  • this is a best music

  • we misses you john denver so sad you leave us so early................

  • dude i live in Australia & we have boat pepole come to our shores & all kinds of crap to deal with so be happy your not here, & it's just getting realy bad, our country is a mess globle warming has hit us hard so stop complaning.

  • And what on earth is wrong with boat people,I'd like to know? Surely if you were put in their shoes, you would want to be treated with compassion & some human kindness than to be kicked around like some abandoned football? Does the Tampa affair ring a bell?

  • Kind of strange how countries who are started by immigrant populations soon forget this & shut the door to further immigration - especially if the latter have a different skin colour or work harder?

  • Natürlich!! Steht doch in den Infos!

  • Who is singing - is it John Denver or is it a cover version?

  • Comment removed

  • Why is the second verse omitted in this song ? " There's so many times I've let you down So many times I've played around I'll tell you now they don't mean a thing "

  • My jet landed at Cam Ranh Bay in Dec 1968, my wife had kissed me good by about 24 hours earlier and I already missed her so much. Watching this video brings back so many memories, and my heart goes out to the troops who are going through this now, I know how they feel. Been there, done that.

Although I do like the Peter, Paul, and Mary version better.

  • my brother goes soon:(:(:(:(:(:(

  • i was on a plane to gatwick but longed to be in manchester xxxx

  • I left on that jet plane once. It landed in Saigon, 1969.

  • Blood and steel moecurlylarry1

  • @moecurlylarry1 Tan Son Nhut? Then over to Long Bihn?

  • @gatorbait51 no, gatorbait, I was with CMAC and basically just stayed in Saigon. I did get out a few times and did get into Long Binh only once.

  • Amazing how some of these discussions on a music video can take on a life of their own. I guess they take off on their own jet plane. :)

  • Come on guys, just enjoy the music! Even though the pictures get a lil repetitive

  • Another great John Denver song!

  • Also, this song is like for pilots too.. They pilot plane so that's why they need to leave and they don't know when they'll come back again because there could be some problems or any other things.. very nice song though..

  • At 0:53, those weren't jet planes. They are Prop Planes.

  • Hi C2ditCAP. Indeed America works with its diversity of religions but because the founding morals are those which can accomodate a variety of views. The Christian religion does not discriminate according to caste/race (as does Hinduism or Judaism) or allow forced conversion or punish apostetacy as does Islam. US morals are founded on tolerant beliefs. You need to convert Afghans to this tolerance if you want democracy to work there and I doubt we can achieve this through force of arms.

  • Comment removed

  • true christianity doesn't discriminate. Sadly, some habits are hard to break, and people will still curse others like you mentioned.

  • All Americans owe a duty to uphold the ideals of The Founding Fathers. Remember that Thomas Jefferson based the Declaration of Independence on the natural law philosophy of the English philosopher John Locke who in turn based liberty on the rights and duties we find in our relationship to a Christian God. This is why democracy works in Christian countries and why we can never export it to muslim countries who simply will not accept Christian duties and rights. Save our heroes from this war.

  • so your saying America works because its christian... now Im personally christian, but also a devout american serving for the red white and blue, but I think its the deversity of religions, ideals, races etc... that make America what it is... if oyu notice most other countries are based on one religion, while the U.S. is very very diverse. If your not muslim in afganistan, ur extreemely disliked, are oyu saying thats how the U.S. is!?

  • Hello Gary. The American Constitution does find its roots in Christian thought, as does Enlightenment philosophy. Even Voltaire ascribed to Locke's vision of free thought and was terrified of only one form of government - atheistic government, which he thought would lead to totalitarianism. The Soviets ignored Locke, Voltaire, Kant and being drunk on the idea that man could be the measure of all things instituted non-christian, man-made law and totalitarian terror.

  • Europe is at its best when it acknowledges its Christain heritage and freedom. Take your example of Scandinavia. Have you ever checked the shape of the flags of Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Finland and Denmark.? Those are all strongly Evangelical Lutheran countries with welfare states that recognise this tradition. I have lived in Sweden and Norway for 10 years and not a week went by without someone approaching me to tell me about Jesus. Hardly crawling with atheists!

  • Look at the statistics instead of going by anecdotal evidence.

Sweden is the most atheist country in the world, if you don't believe me, just check it.

    Same with all of Scandinavia.

  • I don't go by statistics, I go by experience alone. I too arrived in Sweden expecting an atheistic paradise. It aint. Still Christian in values though Mohammed is now the most common boys name, so perhaps not chritian for much longer. Happy now?

  • It's better to believe old books filled with corruption and lies.

    Sure thang homeboy.

  • lol. You must have lived in some pretty weird locations in Sweden and Norway. Europe in general is much less religious then America. And, if people do talk about Jesus, perhaps its a topic you, yourself are bringing up, as opposed to it being a general topic of discussion.

  • carry on laughing. I don't bring up the topic of Jesus or Christianity. If you'd like to know, I'm Jewish. Go visit Sweden. See for yourself. Has been Christian. Perhaps still largely is, but the next generation will be more influenced by Islam.

  • As for Israeli democracy, well it's based on the concept of the LORD God but he's the God only of the Israelites and the Jewish state recognises and reflects this. It's hardly a model for an inclusive US-style democracy that accomodates all races and beliefs. Gandhi's autobiography states clearly that India should be founded upon Hindu spirituality AND Christian equality as based upon The Sermon on the Mount as well as the rule of law inherited from the British.

  • Hindu thought can accomodate a wider range of views than say Islam. Gandhi however had studied law and Christian thought in London and was profoundly influenced by the St Matthew's Gospel. He therefore hoped to introduce equal democracy for all Indians, not just high-caste. Muslims trusted a Hindu state even less than a Christian British state and thought Gandhi was simply a Hindu who wanted to help only high-caste Hindus. War followed Independence with over 1 million dead.

  • To the troops that watch this: Thank you for what you do and go through from one brother to the other. You stand for something that has never been seen by the world 200 years of solid freedom's that are constantly under attack. Remember in your darkest hours what you stand for. Freedom you are the light of a fading democracy but that's not what you stand for. the ideals of our founding fathers are what you stand for. the light that keeps my family safe. God bless all who serve. Never forgotten

  • You have to have real balls of steel to leave your family and the comfort of the great U.S. of A. for a foreing, hostile land and give up your physical and mental integrity (and many times your life) to fight for your country.

  • I wish the USA now had a President with the calibre of Eisenhower. It takes a man with the self-discipline of Eisenhower to have the independence of mind to do what really needs to be done. Then the US would have a President who truly respects the value of each and every life of our heroes who serve in the US military. God Bless America and freedom everywhere.

  • The British government has been telling its people that it is conducting the war in Afghanistan to protect Britain from terrorism, whilst rapidly increasing muslim immigration into the UK. The airliner plot to blow up 10 planes between London and USA was solely plotted within the UK by British born muslims who had not visited Pakistan or Afghanistan. The British government's rationale for the Afghan war just doesn't add up. Does the rationale of the US government make any more sense?

  • I salute you Schoff for bravely doing what you think needs to be done for the sake of your fellow countrymen. Naturally anyone on whose behalf the war is being conducted will expess an opinion as to the wisdom of the campaign, especially when it could destabilise neighbouring nuclear Pakistan. My own nephew is leaving for Afghanistan in March and I pray to God that both he and all servicemen and women out there can achieve something of what they aim to achieve, whatever that may be.

  • Thanks Schoff i thank you for you support of the troops and american freedom. There is no more goddamned respect for the military i was with my father at his job a few years ago and some 20something had the balls to ask "Whats a vet?" (As in Veteran.

  • I disagree with your sentiment, revenger. This is exactly why chivalry is dead in this day and age. Service to your fellow man should be borne of pure intentions. Demanding and/or expecting recognition/respect for your actions is hardly a heroic trait.

  • I recently joined the US Army. I would love nothing more than to support my country, and if that means going overseas to fight this war, I will do it. I find most that oppose the war aren't in the armed forces. No country is perfect, but if you don't support the war keep it to yourself. Everyone is entiled to speak out their opinions, but if it were not for people in the armed forces, we would not be the greatest country in the world. Support the troops.

  • I disagree with your sentiment. Supporting a war and supporting the troops are two separate matters. Some people happen to believe it is more noble to want to bring our troops home and out of harms way than it is to blindly support a war. If we are supposed to trust that your enlistment in to the armed forces is in service of us, the people, why is it so hard for you to trust that our dissent regarding the war is in service of you, the troops?

  • A final note to all those who oppose the war in Afghanistan. The only way to legitimately support the end of the war is to boycott Chinese-made goods. China is the real threat behind this war. One day soon the USA will need an honest debate on increases in military spending (without a war) to counter the growing China threat. Support the US and our best buddy, the UK. Act NOW. YOU can decide to not buy Chinese. Tell your retailers. Save democracy. Save freedom. End the war. God Bless.

  • realy good video i love the choice of the song and picktures. my mom is in the millitary and i hate to see her leave. my mom always sings that the night beor she leaves an she always crys.if thats u and ure hasband is in the army realy hope that he gets hom safe. be safe! l8ter

  • China faces an even greater threat than the West from Pakistan's nuclear bombs (although China gave Pakistan the Bomb). Musilm unrest is growing in Xinjiang, Western China. If the Bomb escapes from unstable pakistan, then China will be worried. Let China (and not us) pour its money into Afghanistan. Let the West invest our money into advanced consumer technology, balance our economies and win back some ground we've lost to China. Bring our brave troops home to safety. God Bless USA.

  • there will be no conventional victory in Afghanistan. The key word is SUCCESS, measured in levels of military spending and profits for US arms industry. The quid pro quo for Obama is he gets a chance to slip in nationalised health care at domestic level. Is the war just? YOU decide, but remember that the Roman Empire officially only ever fought defensive war campaigns as it expanded. The real danger is if we destabilise nuclear armed Pakistan, but I say China created the problem let them sort it

  • So why Afghanistan now? Why did Obama agree to increase the conflict there whilst reduce activity in Iraq? Firstly, easy to sell withdrawal from Iraq and peopel trust a new, popular President to step up but not start in Afghanistan. Why did Goldman Sachs support Obama? Well war profits in Iraq were falling for US arms sellers, Afghanistan will increase demand beyond their dreams. A forty year war will allow extensive investment in military R&D...

  • so the US needs Afghanistan to justify the financial spending on military hardware and R&D. Can the USA win in Afghanistan? Well, there's tens of thousands of Taleban waiting over the Pakistan border. They regard the West as decadent and atheistic/zionist. They will happily fight to death and will no more convert to Christian liberty at the point of a gun than a free Christian American would convert to Islam under threat. The clash is a philosophical one and cannot be won by arms..

  • It's a good time to remember the parting warning of one of America's greatest ever patriots, the war hero General Eisenhower. President Eisenhower warned his beloved American people to beware of the rise of the Military-Industrial complex and it's growing influence over Washington. That was in 1960. Right now China is investing heavily in R&D into advanced weapons systems. The US needs to match Chinese military spending but as a democracy can only justify it if there is a military campaign...

  • yeah my brother has to go back to Iraq obama said that we would int sent more troops that's bull shit

  • fuck all Muslim extremist !!!!

  • Support the troops - bring them home now and put Bush-era war criminals on trial for crimes against humanity.

Out now from Afghanistan, Iraq, Columbia, ...

  • Support the Troops / Fuck the "war"

  • i don't like his voice...but i love the song!

  • Exactly. xD It sounds way better when my music class sings it.

  • leavin in a jet plane....dont know when ill be back again.

  • luton england support the troops long live the brave

  • In June were students from Paraguay at my hometown..and one lived in my house..they was 2 weeks and a few days in Germany...every evening we sing this song..and on the day wich they fly home, we sing this song on the airport..everybody was crying...so i have good and bad memories to this song..and now im crying.because i miss these peopels so much..sry for bad englisch.^^

  • sorry to hear tht 1nicknick respect do u and your dad

  • my dad got put to sleep to this song R.I.P the day before it happened he was saying how much he always loved going up in planes and always wanted to try sky diving ='(, i love you dad!! ='(

  • That's just sad...Man...D'=

  • @1nicknick599 thats beautiful...big hugs!!! XXX from New Zealand

  • @immortalcelsius thanks =)

  • @1nicknick599 Touching.

  • Sinaloa those who look like that have no idea what the war was about and don't give a damn about others they look after number one and thats it, trust me i have met enought of em to realize that, i hate that this country has turned into such a desolate place and even thought veterans day is still celebrated children still ask what veterans day is all about, then i heard a kid say what is so important about the vets so just leave these asswipes alone and ignore them

  • support the us forces because when we come back many people look at us like we did some thing wrong and and that we are bad people all that we are doing is protecting the usa and are familys so support our troops dont turn your backs on them because many of us dont come back

  • john denver was pacifist and always said that war is wrong... it's not the fault of those who fight it's the fault of them who start them and support it...

so the anger of the people is not against you it's against the soldier you are...

  • hey floorpounder quit being so critical, love the song, love the troops. RIP John

  • I love this song a lot<3<3

  • I love this song!! RIP John!

  • those jet planes are AC 130 transporters, a turbo prop, not jets

  • mainly known as C130's.

  • im in high school junior air force rotc and this made me think about the pilots in iran

    America 4 ever

  • salute our toops, they put there lifes on the line to keep our country a free one

  • God bless our army in iraq and afaganstan,i know how hard they work and they put there life on the edge i was there and i know how it feels , god bless the usa and our troops all over the world my heart with them all the time ,

God Bless the Troops in Iraq & Afghanistan!!!

  • so, for sure my comment doesn't fit in, but i just have to poste here, that I am in love with this song :) he's great, great lyrics, great melody, and i love it. it's one of my personal favourite lovesongs.. furhtermore it's a very popular song for castingshows :D that's sad i think, but it shows how many people it love... great work, John Denver! :DD

  • sure a little sissy country that made you yanks back down in 1812

  • Comment removed

  • Sissy countries cry home? No ones blaiming you for joining late pal, thats logic; a war away from home which does not concern you; and at that it was Germany who declared war on you. BUT! Britain fought from the begining to the end, with sucsess and defeat, in several thearters. And at that, thhe real risk for us is that if we lost, what home would there be to come home and "cry" to?

Sissy? Were still In Germany and back you up in Afganistan, don't be ignorent. And Britain paid off her debt.

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • to all the septic tanks you only joined in ww2 when pearl harbour was bomb and if your so big and mighty what about 1812 you couldnt win so backed down and signed a peace treaty

  • Ok, I'm a Limey and enjoy my history, i just want to things straight. No "ONE" factor won the war, it was several. 2. Whether you like it or not the Yanks saved our arse big time, yeah maybe we could win the wa rwith just us and Russia, but I'm dubious. I say hats off to the yanks!

Today, well, II support our armed forces where ever they go,a lthough Iraq was not a bright idea. Afganistan, maybe.

Still, thats leaders, not people. Thanks Yanks :) (PS not sellign out, i love the UK too)

  • Maybe. But dont forget, Britain beat the Germans in the Battle Of Britain and saved itself, forcing Hitler to go after the Russians. Big mistake. Had this not happened, the US couldnt have entered the European war and help win it, to the eternal gratitude of generations of people from many countries. Britain couldnt have won the war, without the US and Russia, but it sure as hell didnt lose it.

  • Well, although Germany didn't invade proper and we kept our government, it wasn't the greatest win. Although things would be worse if Britain did not fight, WWII polished off our empire and really ended Britain's time as THE super power. We were bankrupt.

Yes Britain did win the Battle of Britain, and had sucess in North Africa with very brave men and women from all over the world. But there was a blockade, without US supplies, I don't think rations would last.

  • america didn't exactly win. it was just the thought of them entering that scares because we sometimes seem like teens up for action but the truth is the rest of the countries are the old men who know what theyre doin ameria did help but it was the rest of the countries that won, america was just the enrgy shot

besides that the song is great not only are the lyrics powerful but its one you can gather around the campfire and sing along to because you can relate to it metaphorically

  • I agree John Ray, but without US Aid Britain probably would of fell to the Nazis. And at that, WWII ended the british empire for certain, the dawning of a new era, as if WWI wasn't enough to destroy that.

Anyway yeah I'ma Brit, but I'm proud to say America is a great nation too/ Yeah, contrevertaial at times, no one is perfect, but most Americans seem great people and even my grandfather remembers greeting G.I.'s on his farm when he was just a kid.

Some things never change. God bless ya!

  • hitler couldn't re-enfoce because u s g i-s were whamming at that ass.i guess us actions in the pacific didn't help china either.remember limey a little thing called the lend-lease act? you are a native of a little rock that juts up in the middle of the atlantic ocean. scant resources of any kind.chamberlane gave hitler the go-ahead when he bitched out and gave the sudeten land to slaughter. vietnam was not a war! it was a fight over who was going to control the drug routes in asia .

  • This song is very sad, but i like the song so much.. ♥

  • How beautifull...

    I love this song!

  • in response to Possum0578 i think u'll find it Hitler decision to invade russia that turned the war not the americans lol. If any country had to be praises for winning the WW2 it would be the russians not you yanks. Vietnam sums up your Skill in warfare.

  • No way, without the massive support of the Americans Germany would have won! Of course Hitler made many grave tactical mistakes like using the ME 262 for bombing but the Russians had no adequate weapons to fight the Germans. With the subs and planes like the Horton 229 they would have had a decisive advantage.

  • There always seems to be some historical revionsist from the UK who puts the US down for their actions in WWII, and yet they seem to leave out the fact the US came to their rescue. How odd...

  • actually without america the entire world would be screwed. before us it was just little kids shooting bb guns at each other. america brought the beasts and tore some shit up. FUCK YEAH
