@PaddyCuinne Says you. I think belief in self causes more harm than a belief in a good God who is also a righteous judge. I guess it depends on your perspective. Unless you mean it causes a lot of inconvenience.
PaddyCuinne, my friend. Your logic here is fallacious. In a nutshell you are saying there is no objective way to determine what is right and wrong. The Bible doesn't teach that following a set of rules will get you to heaven. Rather, if you read the NT Bible you will find it's about Faith and Grace and not a set of rules. Jesus left us this simple commandment. "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." (John 13:34) Sound fair enough?
Actually what I'm saying is that there is an objective morality (utilitarianism) and that Christians follow god due to the truth of this morality.
I was brought up catholic and i was taught that if i followed the ten commandments and avoided the seven deadly sins i would go to heaven. In fact this is what every christian i know was taught and believed. There are a huge amount of ways the bible can be read and no one is any better than any other.
Yes, there does seem to be more of a focus on the dos and don'ts in the Catholic tradition when compared to the Protestant view. I think if you took a very literal reading of the NT Bible you won't find that view. It really is rooted in tradition and not the Bible. For example if you just sat down and read the NT you likely would be scratching your head as to where those Catholic views even came from. And I'm not trying to be disrespectful to Catholics, they have every right to their traditions
What I'm saying is just read the NT Bible for yourself. Use a modern translation such as NIV. Read just Matthew to Titus and you'll find there isn't very much "interpreting" you need to do. Sure there are some things that require some cultural understanding and OT knowledge to fully understand. However, for the most part it's very easy to understand. It's not written in any mystical code. It's simple. And if you are going to be critical of it you really should read it first. =)
I'm half way through It actually. and so far i would have to say it is pretty metaphorical. there are some profound truths in there but My point is this video was to point out that really.. we all share the same morality.
Well that is true. And the Bible actually makes that claim. "....since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness...." Romans 2:15
Basically we all naturally know right from wrong. That passage is basically saying that there isn't going to be any excuses of "I didn't know" what was right and wrong. We know as you point out. It's "written on our hearts".
That morality is known as evolutionary morality and is "written on our hearts" because it aids the survival of the species. The bibles morality actually differs from in in certain ways and that is why the amount of sex had by Christians and non Christians before marriage is actually the same.
The morality i am talking about is utilitarianism. and i disagree with evolutionary morality. as it is also our nature to occasionally do evil for the sake of dominance.
What you are talking about is really "subjective morality" which is really just the failed hippie world view of "if it feels good do it as long as it doesn't hurt anyone." But that morality has hurt many people. It has resulted in millions of fatherless children and mothers left to take care of children on their own. And the crime rate in any given community is directly proportional to the percentage of fathers in the home. Relative morality is no morality at all. It's pure garbage and a lie.
@PaddyCuinne Hey man been a while, hope all is well. Sure I have no problem taking this conversation into a private chat. I'll cut and paste that response and send it to your mail.
Dom0ne just posted an original youtube video(Apocalypse- the god incarnate) based on the same principals you just layed out of God actually being the devil. You should check it out. His God's Flaw videos about determinism are pretty good too.
This is exactly what made me stop reading the bible. Both of the main characters in the bible - God and Satan - seem like jerks to me. It's a lot like Star Wars. Luke and Anakin are dipshits; who cares which is the good guy and which is the bad guy?
Nice video. Most Christians don't even follow the ten commandments. People will always do whatever they want, and try to justify it to themselves, or find loopholes. I can't imagine that anyone who follows the bible perfectly would be happy.
Simply all the wholes in the catholic belief system, and yet people still choose to believe it. In todays time, with science, it is simply stupid to live in ignorance of knowledge. Not just, it happened because god mad it so. And i know in philosophy we challenge what we know and perceive, but for argument sake, i'm going to say science works.
Lol well done yet again Paddy, you make me smile. You would have loved my philosophy exam.Covered the existance of God, how we define art and ethics & morality.
