@abrocrombie2012 I know you said that you had a stroke when you were 14 a year ago but I really need to know was your stroke big and were you permanently physical or meantaly damaged?
We had a close family friend who died of a stroke (she had several beforehand). While I did not see the stroke first hand, it was truly upsetting how it affected her before she passed away. She lost almost all her memory and had difficulties talking as she wasn't found for some time initially.
To learn about stroke, what happens after it, what to do to get better (visual attention, unilateral neglect, learning disorders, dyslexia, etc. from stroke), search "Dr. Laurie Cestnick" "Harvard University" on youtube for a video. I hope this is helpful for you!
This was a few weeks ago and she's not mentioned the vision/headaches since, but she knows I'm worried about her and avoids medical treatment because they'll try to have her take time off work. I don’t think anyone’s really looking out for her either, her family just thinks she’s over dramatic. If I call 999 when there’s no definite emergency everyone would be livid, the health workers, my parents, the lady herself and the rest of our team, yet I'm scared valuable time is being wasted.
This friend of mine, 61, very active but with extreme stress levels, often says she has difficulty seeing and burst a blood vessel in one eye several weeks ago - she had to stop the car very suddenly at the side of the road. She'd also complained a headache, caused by lack of sleep (too much on her mind) around the same time. Clumsy hands and arms sometimes but does have arthritis.
I'm scared my friend is going to have a stroke, or a heart attack or nervous breakdown. I had the most horrible dream about her last night. In the dream she was charging around with her usual frantic energy to begin with, but kept stopping from time to time and staring blankly and rubbing her forehead. After one final stress overload she stopped abruptly and clutched her head, then her face began to change colour before she suddenly collapsed into a dead faint.
This is completely true. My dad just had a stroke a little over a month ago is finally back home and is doing so well recovering, thank the Lord. We are all so lucky.
My grandad just had a stroke and I'm really upset about it. My dad says he can talk but can't really move. I'm also scarred as once someones had one stroke they usually get another and die from it. This advert is just scary.
I think the problem of having a fire on your forehead is, in many ways, more than a stroke. It could, for example, set fire to your hair, causing temporary baldness and consequential lack of self-esteem.
i think its good they're showing these adverts but i can't and laugh at the actors faces in these things hahah! i know its bad but HAHAHAHAHA! as fo the people gettin all arsey like 'ohh my child shouldn't watch this ' - chill out - seriously..chill the fuck out
it's talking about how a stroke spreads like wild fire in the brain so they have a animation of fire where the brain should be and it's spreading. they're trying to make a point
i think the new adverts being released at the moment are very effective. This advert is scary, but you are not going to forget this are you? This advert could save many people.
Yeh I agree, my Uncle died recently after having several strokes and I think it runs in my family so it's something I worry about a bit. If this advert saves just one person it's worthwhile but I agree with you, I think it could save many people.
This is a truly awful advert. My mother had a stroke last year and I was really upset and felt sick when I saw this ad. My 10 year old daughter was watching it, but it's aired so early that children of any age could watch it - I mean, a woman's head on fire?? I'm all for raising stroke awareness but the fact that it makes you want to turn the channel could well defeat the purpose. It needs to be toned down. I'm making a complaint to ASA.
i just can not believe some of the comments for how it scares children get a life i have seen worse things in childrens videos YOU just want to hope YOU or YOUR family do not have a stroke i had one when i was 40!! still getting over it but getting there. keep up the good work and ALL of you remember there is NO lower age for a stroke it could be one of YOUR children and i am sure you would want to know how to recoginise one for their sake
well this advert should be banned simple it sacred my 6 year old daugher and now she suffers nightmere thing is there never even took the time to think about the water shed time they are a bunch of fucking inconsiderate pricks
ok we all agree it has serious message but it did go a bit far with the scare tactics. When i was watching it i spat all my coke out and bit went up my nose LOL. i still laugh when this ad comes on and everyone is like thats not funny !!!
THIS ADVERT IS FUCKING SCARY! The first time I saw it it was like 3am, my room was pitch black, I was like all relaxing in my boxers and I screamed like a little pussy. D:
Honestly, I think this advert should be taken down, it could cause heartattacks and nightmares! My little sister who's 4 started crying when she saw it... TAKE THIS AD DOWN OR ATLEAST MAKE IT LESS CREEPY!
I think it's the analogy to fire and imagery that it provokes of fire burning through and destroying the brain that freaks people out.
That, combined with the images of a confused and distressed individual exhibiting extreme and unnatural asymmetry of muscle tension in her face which is so alarming and conductive of serious neurological events/states.
I can appreciate why many people are so freaked out by it. Won't this result in more non-emergency calls to 999?
To those of you who think this is funny, or have made a very negative comment about this advert, I have one thing to say to you - This advert is not a laughing matter, but a horrible reality for so many wonderful people in the world and something that could easily happen to you, or to those who you love in the blink of an eye. Count yourselves lucky its not you.
Whats really scary is how many people here commented the ad where to scary to be shown on TV. Come on folks! Grow some balls. Truth is seldom pleasant and if more people would know about strokes, then less people would turn into vegetable because no one noticed they had a stroke.
This advert is really creepy; I confess that I had to switch it off the first time I watched it, because it upset me a little. But it does its job - and frighteningly well.
This ad is good in that it gets the point across but it's shocking for the sake of it, personally I learnt about strokes when that old woman died from it on Nieghbours in the early 90's!
There are other ways to educate people, this video is nothing more than one advertsing agency trying to be hard hitting.
Yes you are wrong to laugh,My dad had a stroke on monday morning and ive been seeing him like this all week,Its heartbreaking,God forbid it ever happens to someone you care about then i very much doubt you will see the funny side,The more people that are aware the better.
You people can argue about wrapping kids up on cotton wool is bad etc etc. But wwhat you cant deny is that a family who has just had a family member put in hospital because of a stroke will see this and get very upset.
I hate this advert. when i first saw it the other night i was completely freaked out. i dont think they should make adverts like this. pure freaky! hate it! x
I also can't stand these Know your alcohol limit, don't drink drive, don't use the phone while driving and wear your seatbeat adverts. I'm smart and responsible enough to not fall victim to these things, and the kind of idiots who do aren't going to be saved by some TV advert.
This is one of the most unpleasant things I've ever seen on TV. Yes, people have strokes but it's this is not something I want to come on randomly during an advert (at least people can advoid disturbing documentaries because they are shown in the schedules). If they want to educate the public they should teach this in schools (they never told us about strokes when I was in school less than 10 years ago), not put this on while we're trying to be entertained by TV.
Very short, powerful and to the point. As an epileptic (who exhibits similar signs going into a seizure), I hope some people will get the point of this message.
for someone who works on a stroke unit, think its about time the public was made aware of them, now if only they told you that hogh blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and alcohol were some of the biggest causes!!
Live is for living, you live in fear, I am a medic on an oilrig in the middle east, I have seen many injuries and deaths, I nursed my Father through Leukemia and my Mother through bowel cancer they both died, the only thing that caused them suffering was the NHS with thier stupid fear of death and interferance, My Mum would have slipped away with the Pneumonia but they had to keep her going, They lack human understanding because they are to involved in the daily death and suffering,
This ad was shown this evening at 18:50 on ch4, my children were horrified, why must we all live in fear, I am sick of having this sort of thing forced upon us, I want to live without fear and die with my boots on, we can choose which programs our children watch but not the adverts, I have complained to the ASA.
so you not think it appropriate to teach children the signs? I definitely think that children should learn the signs of strokes and heart attacks, one day they could save your life!
It is just passable for involuntary adult viewing, It is imposing fear on my children without my consent I object to, If you don't have children you may not understand, if you do have children would you show them pornography to teach them sex education, would you show people burning alive to teach them about the dangers of fire? there is to much fear in this world. I really don't care if I die sooner than expected just want to enjoy the time I have. I want my kids to live without fear of death
I agree with you, oldskoolchoppeboy. This advert is one of the most unpleasant things I've ever seen on TV and it shouldn't be shown when children are likely to be watching. Even if you don't have kids, you don't want to have this come on randomly during an advert break when you are trying to watch TV for entertainment. At least disturbing documentaries and films can advoided because they are listed in the schedules. Is this really the only way to educate the public?
Ok, prehaps the timing was wrong but my children have both watched it and they are 5 and 8 and I have explained what it is about. They are left with their grandparents when I am at work and if they could help my mum then I and she would appreciate it. The porno and burning alive comment is totally out of context and is a pathetic comparrison. Yyou say you don't care if you die early, but if your kids saved you so they could spend more time with the one they love, is that not worth explaining it?
Overprotecting our children-swaddling them in cotton wool-is bad for society, the economy and young people preperation for adult hood in a world full of uncertainties-
Sir Digby Jones, February 2007
Being open and honest is often the best way to learn about life. Treat your children with the right explainations for their age and don't underestimate their knowledge about topics we didn't even know about until we were much older!!
Pleasingly old fashioned, although I'm not sure the CGI works. Or the acronym. Guys, if you can't come up with something for each letter, don't make an acronym in the first place.
I find the CGI deeply unsettling, so I suppose it works on me. The whole thing isn't nearly as slick or as affecting as the British Heart Foundation's 'Watch Your Own Heart Attack' PIF, but it seems to do the job.
