All sound is music - if you listen with an open mind. It's about how you relate to sound that makes music. The guitar is an instrument capable of producing an endless variety of sounds - why limit the guitar to conventional techniques?
Arto is playing the amp and speakers just as much as he is the guitar - it's all one thing.
What you believe and cling to makes you unavailable to hear anything new.
All these years and Arto still hasn't learned how to play the guitar. One dimensional art of this nature is expected from 25 year old art school grads, but really, if Eno hadn't produced the No New York album, and put his Warlhol-esque stamp of approval on what was/is essentially noise (except for James Chance), Arto would have been forgotten long ago. I had a band like this too, but Eno never called. Darn!
warhol-esque?. its more akin to rothko or the color field painters, or what duchamp did to sculpture. or basquiat's expressionism (and i'm not just making the connection from downtown 81). in any case, what dna did is among the most true-felt and expressive of musics. and that's nothing to shake a stick at in my book.
Arto doesnt "play" the guitar in a traditional sense - but what he brings to a piece - nothing else comes close. He produces soundscapes that are truly magnificent in their own right, If you dont dig it - change the channel. But for those of us that crave the energy - Nobody brings it like Arto.
Arto can most certainly play guitar. First of all, he can actually play bossa nova and other Brazilian music quite well. Secondly, despite what you think, Arto's noise is hard to make. There are lots of 25 year old art students who do this, but if you open your ears to it, you'll find that they usually are quite terrible and truly "one dimensional," compared to most of Arto's work. Some people find noise beautiful, whether you like it or not! Sorry if it offends your sensibilities

I don't think it was ever Arto's goal to learn to play the guitar.
