  • I saw Skaggs perform this with the Chattanooga Symphony. The violinists fought like mad to play this, like they were in a fight with yellowjackets, and Bobby Hicks stepped in and played it so smooth and fluid I still bow to him. A great efficiency of motion.

  • Bill is a great man he's my grandfather

  • @bluegrasssingingman FIRST OF ALL YOU SORRY EXCUSE FOR A MAN AGAIN WHEN YOU GET A RECORDING CONTRACT THEN AND ONLY THEN CAN YOU OPEN YOU STUPID MOUTH. TELL ME GOOBER, WHAT COLLEGE DID YOUR MUSIC DEGREE COME FROM? I CAN SEE BY YOUR USE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE YOU PROBABLY DIDN'T FINISH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. FINE DINING TO YOU WOULD BE ORDERING YOUR DINNER THROUGH A CLOWNS HEAD. YOUR NOT ONLY A REDNECK YOUR A STUPID, IGNORANT, ASSHOLE.

  • Comment removed

  • @bluegrasssingingman OPINIONS ARE LIKE ASSHOLES (YOU) EVERYONE HAS ONE.

  • love the respect young folk today need to take a lesson

  • GREAT!!

  • Great to see Ricky and Bill together.

  • Love love love it! :D WOO HOO! :D

  • damn fine

  • to uncahay, this is the speed of true bluegrass music, it was released in the 50's there is nothing commercial about it or the musicians playing it. A little more research before the comment rip bill.

  • @hip3r43v3r it was more like the 20s, but really became to the front of music in the 40s/

  • More like "Ricky joins Bill"

  • Ricky was barely 6 and new so but in honor of his elder agreed.Unlike the arrogance of a "star", Ricky knows Who Created stars above and below!!

  • @RasMajnouni THESE IGNORANT THINGS OF TODAY WOULDN'T KNOW MANNERS IF IT FELL ON THEM. RICKY IS QUITE A YOUNG MAN.

  • @dadsgirl0423 We raised our 7 in a religious Jewish village here in Israel where being good to others is the norm.Right next door are a few Arab Muslimvillages of whom most likely do the same with a few differences. And yet there are large parts of Israeli schools where you will find the opposite. Its Western culture, its from spending time at the mall for fun, believing it an acheivement to steal. Each parent in the end resultneeds to knowthat their children come before themselves.

  • @RasMajnouni OBVIOUSLY YOU ALSO RAISED YOUR CHILDREN WITH IGNORANCE. I WAS BROUGHT UP IN A VERY STRICT CATHOLIC HOME WITHIN THE WESTERN CULTURE AND I SIR DO NOT STEAL NOR DOES ANY OF MY BROTHERS OR SISTERS. THAT WAS A VERY IGNORANT COMMENT AND VERY UNCALLED FOR. I AM SURE THERE ARE CHILDREN IN ISREAL WHO STEAL AND COMMIT CRIMES NOT ONLY IN THE WESTERN CULTURE.

  • @dadsgirl0423 You'd be right. But why do you think my children don't have vast exposure to the western culture, because we do.Isolation is very bad too.We have to serve in this physical world. I'll admit the last half of my comment was wrong and rash. You are right!

  • Classic! One of my all time faves!!!

  • Way too fast, way too Nashville.

  • @uncahay oh come on.

  • Such a legend....*sigh*.....that did my heart a world of good!!

  • The perfect ending to my day. Don't anybody say anything to me. I want this to be the last thing ringing in my ears

  • This is F**king legendary!

  • In 1975 I saw Bill Monroe in Louisville Ky. in a club called The Great Midwestern Bluegrass Hall. ( I was told later Bill did not approve of alcohol). Late in the evening the crowd was getting loud. and he actually waved his band off midsong and told us, "IF YOU CAN'T KEEP TIME, DON'T CLAP. YOU'RE THROWING THE BAND OFF!....Spanked by the father of bluegrass. You could have heard a pin drop.

  • @kent12456 That's awesome!

  • @kent12456 LOL that is cool. Wish I could have seen him perform, Im a young girl who grew up on bill and faltt and scruggs and ricky and so on, i was born in 1980, but im bluegrass to my roots for sure.

  • great post

  • 1:13

  • 1:15

  • 1:16

  • The first three rows are not the best places to sit! They cost too much to see peoples backsides! The photographers are blocking the entire show! I

  • I don't really like this versions. Its like Country Western music is trying to ruin Bluegrass.

  • Bill Monroe and Ricky Scaggs!!!

  • Bill Monroe and Ricky Scaggs!!!

  • Bobby Hicks played with the Bluegrass Boys in the 50's and here with Kentucky Thunder. Bluegrass' most important fiddler in my opinion. The guy played with everyone.

  • @allenjs yeah and he also had a horrible attitude too.

  • gret stuff, but I always get a bit sad as you can tell that Mr Monrow was well past his prime. I saw him live not to long before he left us and his skills had dimished so much from when I saw him in WV in 1974.

  • ricky skaggs is from my town. hes coming to a local festival this year and i cant wait. hes a legend and we usually just get what ever band will play for the money we raise... usually the kentucky head hunters. i cant wait for the first weekend of september. its a good old fashioned blue grass this year... yippee lol but yea ive loved this song since i discovered it when i was like 5...

  • In my opinion, Ricky Skaggs, is the best choice to carry on the tradition that Bill started. There are plenty of bluegrass singers and bands, but I believe Skaggs best embodies what Monroe started, and is best suited to carry it forward.

  • Ricky seems real annoyed by Bill. He corrects him, them doesn't seem to want to share the mic, and even moves Bill's hat out of his way! Kinda disrespectful, in my opinion.

  • the business!!!

  • I love when he says "Oh howdy" like he's surprised to see a crowd.

  • @beardood Maybe he had forgotten to say hello to everyone? I've worked in show business and it's not easy to remember everything you're supposed to do in front of a live audience like that.

  • Ricky plays with Bill's hat at or around 2:55 or so!!

  • @TheJaredwise correction, its 2:49-2:51

  • Well he was barely 6,see "Ruby" by these 2 greats.Look under Ricky Skaggs

  • I still can't believe Ricky Skaggs spoke like that to Bill Monroe...He wrote the song, it's not your number 1, it's Mr. Monroe's. You even stole his fiddle player!!!

  • some one posted to me who Hank Snows fiddle player was, lost it. Had naver

    heard Bobby, BUT OH MY!!

  • If you know anyone that wants to know what original music was just let them see videos by these two... Question answered

  • Best part of the video is Bill Monroe and Bobby Hicks!

  • Between these two they could play anything that had strings!!! Back when music was music!!!!

  • I think he corrected Bill because he was 6. By all acounts, Ricky was a stringed instrument prodigy. It's obvious by how well he plays many instruments. I saw Ricky in concert and there is nothing unprofessional about him. He is a sweetheart.

  • I think that was a joke about his age.

  • haha. he corrected Monroe. What balls...

  • Ricky Skaggs should not have tried to correct Mr Munroe on the stage, that's awfully unprofessional.

    Great song though.

  • Who is playing pedal steel here? Hot Licks

  • @drphilman: He's from AT&T :P

  • Terry Crisp

  • The father of the bluegrass and the son.. Two legends..

  • @janetiz1 DAMN RIGHT

  • Ricky Skaggs needs to start talkin' less and playin' more

  • i get chills every time i hear this!

  • who is that fiddle player he is great

  • I recon that's Bobby Hicks.

  • Bill was like... the best mandolin player of time

  • @jewishcurrymastah and then Chris Thile was born! All respect to Bill though...considering he's the father of bluegrass and always will be.

  • @RyansMind Chris Thile is a very good mandolin player, Most of the stuff he does is NEW GRASS.

  • @jewishcurrymastah HE'S GOOD BUT HE'S NO RICKY

  • i am proud to be from the same as these two men...

  • Please does anyone know if Bobby is still

    alive.

  • Yes he is! He lives in Marshall, NC.

  • @oldermusiclover if im not mistaken yes he is

  • Bill's mandolin looks like its Willie Nelson's guitar. Still sounds great even after the rebuild.

  • Bill Monroe is the greatest voice that ever stepped onto a stage. Ricky Skaggs is right behind him what a young man. You people forget who the REAL stars are in this video and it sure ISN'T Bobby Hicks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • well...that could be a bit disputed because Hicks had that famous melody throughout the whole song.

  • You want to hear someone really play an instrument listen to Bill Monroe on the mandolin that's talent my friend.

  • i've listened to Bill more times than i can count and i've just never cared for him much. I respect him for being the legendary musician that he was, i've just never cared for him.

  • BOBBY HICKS IS A MASTER!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • This is Bobby Hicks.

  • Bobby Hicks

  • Bobby Hicks is a MACHINE

  • If these guys had been truck drivers they would never scrape a gear, perfection incorporated!!

  • yOU CAN HEAR IT TALK YOU CAN HEAR IT SING!!!

  • Bill stole our hearts!

  • This has to be the BEST Bluegrass song ever!

  • Dan I don't even kno u and I don't live in ohio

  • Ricky skaggs is my cousin

  • really? how awesome :)

What kind of person is it? i think he must be somebody who enjoys his life :)

  • Andrew? This is your cousin Dan from Ohio.

  • American music at it's finest. I love the fiddling. Some nice bling on the players, lol.

  • This is Kentucky at its best. I grew up listening to Bill Monroe and Ricky Skaggs.... Nothing better... as for the dancing... what Eastern Kentucky person doesn't know how to dance that jig... GO Bill GO! ...

  • takes me back home every time.

  • yeahhh!

  • Who is the pedal steel player? Amazing...

  • Terry Crisp.

  • I'm laughing my ass off reading some of the comments. I suggest for the people who cannot appreciate the tradition, talent and history represented at the Grand Ole Opry, you should immediately go back to some videos you can understand, like the Lemon Pipers or 1910 Fruitgum Company.

  • I love this video but it really ruins it when you read the comments and ignorant people are arguing about nonsense and using profanity especially taking the Lord's name in vain. That is uncalled for and sickening to me and anyone with any heart or good sense.

  • I love that dance bill does at 2:57

  • so great, it reminds me of my chilhood my uncles aunts and neighbors would all get together on friday evenings ,they all took turns, one would play a tune while someone else would step dance

  • well it is blue grass...

  • Ricky is space master on the strings, and Bill Monroe is always on my mind. T for Texas!

  • Just because I like bluegrass doesn't mean I like Larry the Fucking Cable Guy. Doesn't make me a redneck. Just means I like the sound. Besides, I'd take Rocky Mountain grass over Appalachian stuff any day. I'm really not that much of a fan of southern accents.

  • i might be a dum ass country boy but them fellers can pick

  • First, this song is a "bear" to learn to sing . My tongue had to move so fast, I swear it must have caught up to itself and I saw it exitiing out my left ear. This is one hellacious tempo to get down while learning the words. Tough fight, Ma, but I won! As for these "damn yankees", I used to be one of you and am a "Redneck In Training". Left the Philly area almost 2 years ago and never regretted it. Can't beat the Knoxville area, Country's beautiful, and the prople are just wonderful. C'mon down

  • boy i hate to tell ya but if you have to call yourself a redneck you aint no redneck

  • Ain't said I was a "Redneck", YET. Just goin' through trainin'. How ya expect a "transplant" like me ta get things down pat in just 2 yrs? But I love it down here and I promise to work real hard on my lessons and make even you proud of me.

  • Disregard the screenname, above. That's my Daughter that I didn't know was signed in and never looked. SEE! I'm workin' on my edumakashun as a C.R.N. (Certified Red Neck) I'll make it!

  • Besides Austin, there is nothing positive about your state.

  • I normally wouldn't reply to such ignorant drivel, but here it is !

    H E Y , M O T O R M O U T H !!!!!

What's this "AUSTIN stuff?!?!?!?! I think it's pretty clear that I live in Knoxville, TN! GET IT:"K N O X V I L L E , T N ". I don't know (or care) where you're from but you have a problem with your reading! In TN, we have a tremendously rated course @ U.T> - Yiou ought to taker advantage of it ! It's title id "REMEDIAL READING 101 FOR DUNCES".

  • lol, was I talking to you? I responded to blakob13. obviously. but, since you made this your business....

hahahahaha your aspiring to be a redneck?? That's like saying "well gee, I wish my IQ wasn't so high. I wish I could be socially and culturally backwards. I wish I could fit the role of ignorant ractist unintelligent backcountry hic." Nothing positive whatsoever about being a redneck. good day miss.

  • funny i bet you couldnt kill and cook your own food...maybe mcdonalds is to easy to fatten up ya ass....the racist redneck remark is funny...you are listening to blue grass on you tube LOL!! you are just a redneck in denial...i think that you are really "intellegent" calling other people racist and you are the only one on here making stupid degrading remarks..so you are also racist in denial... and that is like saying " well damn jim bob lets git on you tube and make fun of pround rednecks!!"

  • i am from north by god carolina....buddy come on down or up here depending on "whar you et!" you know i would reallty like to see you survive on the land all the book smarts in the world aint worth nuttin if you can't survive on the land..and eattin tha critters on it LOL!! you would throw up if you had to clean your on food. mommas boy stay of of this here redneck channel

  • The fuck would I want to survive on the land and cook my own animals for? You can live an empoverished blue collar life in a bubble from the rest of the world if that suits you. I'll take my book smarts and make myself all the money I want. i'll work just as long and hard as you, except i'll be making 5x as much. And I'll get to enjoy all the comforts of modern city life. If I want a break, i'll come down and stay on a ranch in North Carolina for a weekend.

  • ya damn yankee i STILL LOVE YA

  • just to humor you....

I really did find the whole water argument hilarious. Whereas my lake water is my , fluorine-enhanced, and filtered, well water is literally the runnof from the cow feces on your farm. literally just the unprocessed insecticide/pesticide seepage from the earth. lol.

  • This video is one of the best Ive ever seen,Bill and Ricky playing and singing like Angel's from Heaven :0)

  • I think your a moron

  • i saw his concert uhh jan. 18, 2009 i think but it was really good..

  • Who was playing the jug??? Was it Denver Pyle????

  • The fellow playing the fiddle is Bobby Hicks. I believe he's the last of "The Boys in the Band" to "depart" just before the band was renamed "Kentucky Thunder". Ricky lost one of the finest group of side men in the business. I guess it was time to move on. Guys like Ray Flacke (Lead guitar), Jesse Chambers (5 string banjo), Lou Reed (Banjo and fiddle), Ray Grantham (Drums), Gary Smith (Piano). I give high marks to Kentucky Thunder, but the Boys made 'em look like they are runnin' in slow motion.

  • I forgot Bruce Bouton who played the steel guitar. He was about the finest in the business. This new guy couldn't hold Bruce's picks.

  • difference between Terry Crisp (the new guy) and Bruce is that bruce was a jerk. I know because he was a real snob towards Jesse Chambers (who happens to be my dad).

  • Barbara Mandrel wasen't a half assed picker. She could shred steel.

  • sirlonghair,

I don't remember putting it quite like that, but you're right. As an instrumentalist, wirh such ability to play just about any instrument, this lady is probably without peer. I have always liked to listen to Barbara and wish she would be featured playing solo more often. (Beautiful lady, too. Those eyes just make me melt)

  • the steel was BarBara's first instrement she got awards playing and as you point out multi instrumentalist.like roy clark simply the best all around guitar player I have ever scean better than,Eddy, malmstien or erich clapton(most overrated player ever) put together

  • Comment removed

  • @bluegrasssingingman I still say Roy Clark is one of the top guitar players of all time.Live I watched him do a classical tune broke two strings and maid up for it with alt. fingering like the guitar was still singing on six strings I have 15 years as back line and monitor engineer on national stages I took a bow with Buckwheat Zidaco and Coco Montoya worked with Blues Travelers 3 times(there engineer was an ass) Kansas 3 times,Journey,Molly Hatchet I could fill pages

  • trooper..I don't know if you intentionally did this but you combined some lineups.

Ricky's second lineup included George Grantham (drums, vocals), Ray Flacke (guitar, vocals) Bouton, Jesse Chambers (on bass..not banjo) Mickey Merritt (Piano, Vocals) Gary Smith (Piano (country boy album, Live In London album, tours in between) Lou Reid (Banjo, Fiddle, Mandolin, Acoustic Guitar, Vocals) Bobby Hicks (Fiddle, vocals)

  • BBJ, You're right. Guess dining on "filet of sole" DOESN'T taste that good. Thenks - My bad.

  • Comment removed

  • @bluegrasssingingman you're basing that on what?
