@stuart8496 it's only sitting in it's cradle in the middle of the House when it is in session, without it there the House has no ceremonial power. It's kinda like the key to the whole process. Symbolic but potent.
About time someone with some Authority made a symbolic stand like this about a project that will devastate the local area. Being born and raised in Hayes I've met John McDonell a few times at a few meetings and wasn't surprised that this reaction.
Mcdonnell should have the respect of us all. He's not afraid of standing up for what is right, even if he had to stand alone. This is what we need in this country as you can well see our rights and freedoms are being taken away under this government.
That's an amusing notion but unfortunatly theres 2 problems with that. 1 Brown wasn't there and 2. McDonnell is a Labour MP so he'd be atacking his own party leader
I noticed the Speaker said said he had to withdraw that term. What did he say that was so bad?

@Angryification withdraw from the floor of the House.

lol. Nice to see an MP who is genuinely willing to fight for his constituents.
Does anybody know what happened afterwards? It looked like he wanted to go and sit back down with it.

It signifies the Monarch's power. Without the Mace, the House is not fully constituted.

@stuart8496 Because without it, the house of Commons is nothing.

It's such a shame John McDonnel opted out of the leadership race. Diane Abbot is the alternative choice for lefties, but I prefer McDonnel.

Good you John, one of few politicians to stick to his convictions.

Obviously Mr. McDonnell is a politician of conviction, how very refreshing! Though the deputy speaker was right to 'name' him.

So funny, he should've twatted Gordon Brown over the head with it.

A national disgrace in planning terms. This money should be spent on a more efficient high speed rail network.
I think he was right to pick up the mace.
