Call me simple-minded, an elitist, etc. but this lacks expression. 1349 has a distinct style of playing black metal but with that they just miss out on certain elements, atmosphere and a sense of emotion first and foremost. The thing to do: compare 1349's version of Buried by Time and Dust to Mayhem's. Technical proficiency is only one aspect of music, and as great as 1349's may be, I just don't think it is enough all on its own. Still, they are one of the recognizable bands of the new wave.

Early black metal was just very poor quality, just like any other "underground" musical movement. The main difference is that some black metal folks look at that poor sound quality, not to mention poor video production, as a sign of being "true black metal" and therefore, pride. 1349 purposely uses the poor quality and basic composition used by second wave black metal bands. I won't speak for them, not my place, but I consider it their way of honoring their musical progenitors.

The recording is actually very pristine; the reason it sounds so "low quality" is because they are actually pushing the tracks during recording. That's why you have the treble-like crackling, and why it sounds like everything is ran through a fuzz. The sound is all brought together with the vocals, which sound like they're run through a Boss DS-1. Same goes for Craft and Leviathan's work.
