Resananace was quite correct that MacBook air is NOT the thinnest laptop ever... actually it was beat TWICE!.. how sad, in 1998 Mitsubishi made a Pedion with the .7244 thickness, and then again in 2003, sharp made the muramsas that is .53 inches thick, in comparison with the MacBook air which is .76 inches thick, it comes in third in thickness, also, it doesnt seem very reliable, no cd/not enough usb/external ports, way overpriced...
next they'll come out with a slightly thicker version called macbook water and that will have an optical drive and usb ports with a crappy keyboard and less battery life lol

Well if you count the fact that it cannot play cds or dvds is really dumb. Those who can't afford a wireless optical drive are stuck with having a wired optical drive, meaning you cannot plug a printer into it or anything of that type. In other words, it's not a very versitile computer at all. The only thing they have going for it is that it's small. Impressive but virtually useless.
I'm tired of this. Each and every computer has its cons and pros. The MacBook Air is going to be bought by business people who don't have good experience with computers. Yes, the MBA is limited by the 1 USB but if you can't see the up points of the engineering you aren't a geek.

I'm thinking of getting a macbook air, because my current HP laptop is getting old, so I'll probably convert this one to a desktop/laptop, and save up for a macbook air specifically for travel and school (which i do a lot). Everything it's missing I don't really use that much, and I'm a HUGE wireless person.
The Macbook Air to me is one of those cool electronics that on of your friends own, and when you go over their house or sleep over you love playing with it. But you wouldnt actually buy it for yourself. Its basically just a fun little laptop.
I have a regular black Macbook which is ten times better than the Air but one of my friends has the Air. And i love going over his house just to screw around with it but in all true i would take the Pro or regular Macbook over the Air any day.

I'm failing to see the reasoning behind this computer. Bad move on Apple's part if you ask me. I'll keep my Black Macbook, which is cheaper, and outperforms this in every way. I can deal with carrying around the extra 1/4 inch and 2 lbs. I'll do some extra pushups or something.

The MacBook Air looks really cool, I'll grant you that. But who would actually want it for function? All Macs are way overpriced. It's a fact. $1800 for the Air, which has got HALF the space of a cruddy hard drive, and barely a standard processor. You have to wirelessly hijack someone else's computer to even play a CD/DVD. For this to even exist, Apple relies on smart people still owning real computers for the Air to piggyback on. Apple relies on looks to sell their products; this is just proof.
The Air is over-priced and under-powered. You buy Apple products for their design, not their functionality. The Macbook Air is an exceptionally uncaptivating product. Seriously, how much demand is there for a notebook that is thin enough to fit in an envelope? My notebook is less than an inch thick, and that's perfectly acceptable. Apple products come packed with the most features for the price, everyone in the market knows that. The iPhone can continuously be updated since it doesn't have any physical buttons, so its completely changeable for free. Upgrades only cost the customer if they aren't a "subscription" based" product, every American Company has to follow the new SOX Law, so learn about it before you make further mistakes. Macs ARE far better than Windows, nobody disputes that... Except people scared of quality.
You know.. funny thing is. Apple tried to sue the kid who hacked his iPhone to allow it onto his T-Mobile service, even though Law states that the product MUST be allowed to transfer networks. But Apple has a contract with AT&T so they didn't want that happening. And even though it doesn't have buttons (Wow.. how amazing....) It still has hardware inside that can't be updated by a simple download.
How about we go into the fact that updates for Windows Machines come to you free of charge every week, Versus the fact that Mac requires you to upgrade your OS every year, year and a half or so for some $150 price tag. Oh did I mention that if you use an older version of Mac OS software you are pretty SOL on any of their new products that come out. Windows XP is still in use because Microsoft doesn't require you to upgrade for years to come, allowing bugs to be removed..
You completely don't know what your taking about... PERIOD. Over the years, it's been LESS expensive to UPGRADE a Mac than a Windows PC. All updates are FREE, you only pay $109 on average every 2 years, that is UNLESS you buy a new Mac, where it is again free. All software written 7 years ago, still works fine on the latest version of OSX. Apple has the best track record in the industry for remaining backward compatible. You are simply Jealous of OSX, and Mac Users, that's your problem.
I completely agree. As for the others posting replies to this comment, they're just trying to defend what they know is a form-over-function machine. It's not as bad as it used to be with Macs, but they're still less compatible, more expensive, (in the Air's case, less functional) and Apple is really immature about everything. Seriously. It has access to 127 USB ports, but that's only if your network is out of date, most people that will buy the MacBook Air have a fully wireless network, so the need for USB is obsolete.
yeah my macbook does too. Dont feel like payng for that reduced ting. Less CPU more GB (but not wort the money as macbook ram is 36€ per 2Gb) no cd/DVD drive. Its light as hell and probably fragile as hell. Just soo not worth it. By the way 1,5kg is the macbook air and about 2,3 kg for the macbook. So where the fuck are the 800 bucks additionaly coming from. Seriously that was a dumn thing to release.

way over rated. the sony x505 is .62 inches at its thickest so the macbook is the worlds second thinnest notebook(and the x505 was made in 2003) and the x505 weighs a full pound less.
BUT the macbook does have the slowest hard drive of any laptop in the world, a non replaceable battery, no ethernet port, no firewire. we wanted a subnotebook, not a thin notebook missing ports and drives.
and the movie rentals? i can rent movies from redbox for $1, and burn myself a copy for my ipod.
I was impressed with everything again at the Apple Keynote apart from the MacBook Air. It's rubbish!!! It doesn't even have the spec of a MacBook Pro which is a bit of a let down and without the optical drive people who only have that in their house will HAVE TO buy the seperate one, adding only one USB thats just suicidle to any computer manufacturer, really didn't expect that from Apple!!! >:(

The MacBook Air looks really cool, I'll grant you that. But who would actually want it for function? All Macs are way overpriced. It's a fact. $1800 for the Air, which has got HALF the space of a cruddy hard drive, and barely a standard processor. You have to wirelessly hijack someone else's computer to even play a CD/DVD. For this to even exist, Apple relies on smart people still owning real computers for the Air to piggyback on. Apple relies on looks to sell their products; this is just proof.

The Air is over-priced and under-powered. You buy Apple products for their design, not their functionality. The Macbook Air is an exceptionally uncaptivating product. Seriously, how much demand is there for a notebook that is thin enough to fit in an envelope? My notebook is less than an inch thick, and that's perfectly acceptable. In order to make it so thin Apple had to take out all the good stuff.The Air is slow and uses old technology. It's much less a thin notebook than it is a giant iPod

Apple has no class, they really don't. If you are the big dog on the block you don't need to go around telling everyone about it, they already know. Apple products come packed with the most features for the price, everyone in the market knows that. The iPhone can continuously be updated since it doesn't have any physical buttons, so its completely changeable for free. Upgrades only cost the customer if they aren't a "subscription" based" product, every American Company has to follow the new SOX Law, so learn about it before you make further mistakes. Macs ARE far better than Windows, nobody disputes that... Except people scared of quality.

You know.. funny thing is. Apple tried to sue the kid who hacked his iPhone to allow it onto his T-Mobile service, even though Law states that the product MUST be allowed to transfer networks. But Apple has a contract with AT&T so they didn't want that happening. And even though it doesn't have buttons (Wow.. how amazing....) It still has hardware inside that can't be updated by a simple download.

How about we go into the fact that updates for Windows Machines come to you free of charge every week, Versus the fact that Mac requires you to upgrade your OS every year, year and a half or so for some $150 price tag. Oh did I mention that if you use an older version of Mac OS software you are pretty SOL on any of their new products that come out. Windows XP is still in use because Microsoft doesn't require you to upgrade for years to come, allowing bugs to be removed..

You completely don't know what your taking about... PERIOD. Over the years, it's been LESS expensive to UPGRADE a Mac than a Windows PC. All updates are FREE, you only pay $109 on average every 2 years, that is UNLESS you buy a new Mac, where it is again free. All software written 7 years ago, still works fine on the latest version of OSX. Apple has the best track record in the industry for remaining backward compatible. You are simply Jealous of OSX, and Mac Users, that's your problem.

you have to think its amazing to see what apple did theres nothing like it.pictures and video doesn't do justice. i would get it if i was loaded but for now no. deff needs better cpu and battery life...and SHOULD have a optical drive. i dont care much about hdd cos most people have external drive for all there stuff and with time capsule its gonna be a breez. not to sound like im pro macbookair cos i work for them but it lacks alot. if its good now imagine the next gen air

It has access to 127 USB ports, but that's only if your network is out of date, most people that will buy the MacBook Air have a fully wireless network, so the need for USB is obsolete.

yeah my macbook does too. Dont feel like payng for that reduced ting. Less CPU more GB (but not wort the money as macbook ram is 36€ per 2Gb) no cd/DVD drive. Its light as hell and probably fragile as hell. Just soo not worth it. By the way 1,5kg is the macbook air and about 2,3 kg for the macbook. So where the fuck are the 800 bucks additionaly coming from. Seriously that was a dumn thing to release.

way over rated. the sony x505 is .62 inches at its thickest so the macbook is the worlds second thinnest notebook(and the x505 was made in 2003) and the x505 weighs a full pound less.
BUT the macbook does have the slowest hard drive of any laptop in the world, a non replaceable battery, no ethernet port, no firewire. we wanted a subnotebook, not a thin notebook missing ports and drives.
and the movie rentals? i can rent movies from redbox for $1, and burn myself a copy for my ipod.

I think that the "air" is a modern feat of engineering. However, being the first of it's kind (thin and performance), it is gonna suck at first.
1- Hard drive is no problem. 80 GB is the same as the Macbook.
2- Price is understandable (development and stuff. It will come down, as everything does!)
3- Optical drive is liveable without. I didn't say enjoyable...

I was impressed with everything again at the Apple Keynote apart from the MacBook Air. It's rubbish!!! It doesn't even have the spec of a MacBook Pro which is a bit of a let down and without the optical drive people who only have that in their house will HAVE TO buy the seperate one, adding only one USB thats just suicidle to any computer manufacturer, really didn't expect that from Apple!!! >:(
