Very nice to watch a nurse politely handing a doctor his ass. What a beauty!!! And her singing, well now I really know what was meant by the term torch singer. I read somewhere that her ex Jack Webb was not very nice to her when they were married. God, I would have treated her like a goddess. Nice to know that she finally found happiness with Bobby Troup. I didn't know about the tidbit about her going out with Martin Milner, what an odd pair.
@bnbggrl Yes. And I would imagine that you know that their mariage was the second for both. Bobby's first wife (Cindy, I believe) gave him the inspiration for "Route 66" on their way to LA in the late '40s. And of course, Julie's wife was "Emergency!''s original Executive Producer, Jack Webb. One more tidbit: in the pilot, it is strongly hinted that Dixie and Pete Malloy (from Adam-12) were once an item.
@Banner4real035 I meant "Julie's husband", of course! I can't believe I typed that, even by accident! :-( My apologies to the Webb, London and Troup families as well as my many fellow Mark VII fans out there!
@GN400ladyrailfan some people think that nurses resent paramedics it's stupid but it does happen. Not all nurses resent paramedics, some do though. Dixie is just a compassionate person and she feels strongly about the things she believes in.
The same can be said of Bobby Troup(Dr. Joe Early). He was in the army in WWII and was in command of black troops. He saw that they were living in poor conditions at the base; only staying in tents instead of barracks and having no latrines. He worked to get them modern toilets and had them work to set up a rec room with games etc. That units quarters became the pride and envy of everyone else.
@wonderglory i think he did... i just can't believe it... Dixie and Dr.Brackett are supposedly dating in this show, but in real life, Julie was dating " Dr.Early" Bobby... ? it is weird
Can you post this whole episode? It's one of my favorites, but I only have it on DVD, and I want it on my mp3 player, but I don't know how to get past the protective seal on the DVD.
No offense but they don't want you to because it is taking money away from them if you can do that for free. I do however understand your frustration, hopefully they will soon offer that legally.
Julie was also a wonderful singer, and still a gorgeous woman in her 40s at the time. Too bad her first husband (the unique Jack Webb)was, well, rather average and the second one (Bobby Troup) was barely her equal lookswise, but somewhat better looking.
A human failing, that's all. We judge others by their appearance, and overvalue those who are Vogue material. The London/Troup marriage certainly worked out, for it lasted for nearly 40 years, 'til death did them part. I don't think that poor Julie ever recovered from Bobby's death - and Julie was in poor health by then.
They were married for over 20 years when the show started. The ironic thing is that her first marriage was the Jack Webb, the creator of the the show(as well as Adam-12). They were still friends afterwards and when 'Emergency' was thought up, he wanted Julie and Bobby to both star in it.
Julie died not too long after her beloved Bobby. She had a stroke and had other health issues before he died.
That's Dick Hammer. Hammer was an actual LACoFD Captain in the series first season. Two of the episodes ("Crash" and "Dilemma") John Van Orden (John Smith) replaced Dick Hammer (Note Van Orden's name on the back of his bunker coat in the catburglar rescue in "Dilemma"). Hammer left because of the strain the acting role was having on his life. From season two onward, he was replaced by actor/writer Michael Norell (Captain Henry "Hank" Stanley).
I am not sure of the actors name until I look it up, but the man who portrayed 'Paramedic'(and PITA) Craig Brice died at an early age, a few years after the show ended. He was killed in a skiing accident.
The man who played Craig Brice was James G. Richardson, who died in 1983 at age 39. LOL, calling Brice a PITA (as in pain-in-the-arse) was an original. I love it! Brice was a thorn on Gage's side - I would have loved to put those two in the same room. The results would have been messy, though, but funny.
Everybody would have asked for transfers, or sought other lines of work. Forget Miranda Priestly - Craig Brice would have been the archetypical Boss from Hell because of his obsession over rules.
You are probably right! Then again sometimes people with his personality ARE the ones who end up as Chiefs! To give him some credit though, perhaps he finally learned to chill out a little. Either 'Brice' would have died in 1983, so he wouldn't have had many years to be Captain.
Why didn't your parents let you watch it? I would have expected this treatment if you wanted to watch All in the Family, but not this. As Will Smith, formerly known as the Fresh Prince, once said, parents just don't understand.
Funny you mentioned All in the Family. Come to think of it, I never saw "Emergency" when it was broadcast. Not even once, because it was opposite All in the Family, if I remember correctly. Saturday nights at 8PM.
Well, back in Canada, programmers were sensible enough to schedule Emergency! at 7 p.m. Saturday nights - an hour before All in the Family. (It was CTV's idea when it bought the series in the mid-1970s - kudos to them!) Maybe Emergency! occasionally beat All in the Family in week-to-week (as opposed to season-to-season) ratings in the States, but in Canada it was probably the second most popular show on TV in the mid-1970s.
Our US Saturday night programming then was phenomenal. All in the Family, Bob Newhart, Mary Tyler Moore. They didn't need someone at the laugh track button either then, hitting it every time somebody walked in the room. They were filmed before audiences, as any intelligent show needn't be afraid of.
I agree one hundred percent, defundthewar! I also watched those shows religiously while growing up, and they still hold up today - despite the dated references. I only wish that TV execs today have this same propensity to take risks: audiences get tired of the same old same old rubbish after a certain time.
Was it because of the emergency parts? Did they ever watch it themselves? I am just confused because it never really showed guts and gore(the way shows do now like 'er'). It was a show that kids could get into. Many like myself were influenced at least in part to become firefighters and EMS.
As far as regular stars, Dr. Brackett, Dr. Morton, J. Gage, R. Desoto, Capt. Stanley, Chet, Marco, and Mike Stoker are all still alive.
That doctor who made Roy DeSoto consider quitting the paramedic program is a total jerk! He thinks he's doing his patients a big favor bypassing on-the-scene intervention by the paramedics; instead, a man he brings to the hospital dies because he doesn't get help early enough. I hope that's been his big wake-up call.
Why dont nurses wear uniforms, like, that now?

Married for 40 years before he died of a heart attack in 1999, aged 80. Julie London died on Bobby Troup's birthday, nearly 18 months later.

There should have been a story line where Gage and DeSoto had to rescue him in an emergency call!
