I used to drive my friends Explorer from this time period. Pretty solid. The miracle of American engineering though was the late 90's Explorers felt cheaper and drove worse than the late 80's explorer. My folks late 90's Explorer was the worst vehicle ever. The windshield wipers would spontaneously start when you went around a corner. No wonder they're all failing.
The Bronco II ended the year before the Explorer came out. 1991 was THE FIRST model year for the Ford Explorer. I have a 1991 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer. Runs Great! Oh, and to the people arguing below me...there was a Ford Bronco II, Explorer package, but it was only a 2-Door.
Kind of. The original Bronco was made to rival the Chevy k5 Blazer and GMC k5 Jimmy, and production ended to to "sale fail". The Bronco 2 was a short competitor for the S10 Blazer and Jimmy, and was later replaced by the explorer. If you notice, all competitors (Jeep Cherokee XJ, S10 Blazer/GMC Jimmy, For Explorer) all had a similar, and popular, "square" physical appearance.
Well i'm glad Ford didn't call it Bronco II EL

These early Explorers were better than the late 90's version. No wonder Ford almost went bankrupt.

@duncan36 theres no such thing as a "late 80s" explorer. They dubuted in 1990 as a 1991 model

Yeah note this was in 1989 Ford hadn't quite decided yet what it would be called; "Explorer" was chosen some time after this video aired.

During development of the Explorer, it was simply referred to as the Bronco II "Explorer Package"
You have to understand that the first generation of Explorer was little more than an upgraded and improved Bronco II chassis with a different body.

i know that

what? the Explorer was basically a Bronco 2

No. the Explorer is a redesigned Bronco II, Ford decided to change the name at the last minute. Look it up.
