I've just read the comment by @ratscisum that this song is by Linda Creed and Thom Bell, the married geniuses behind The Spinners's and The Stylistics's success. I once read that Dionne Warwick told B. Bacharach that Thom Bell was the Black BB. I agree. I used to be convinced that "People Make The World Go Round" was a BB song. Thom Bell must have produced the Mathis version as well.
I love this version. I love the Spinners, but they have nothing on Johnny Mathis on this one. The arrangement makes it sound like a Burt Bacharach song, which is a good thing.
Brilliant Song!! "I'm Coming Home" from April 1973 had the right blend of horn sounds and rhythm in the tune. The world salutes Entertainer Johnny Mathis; and to wit, we commend him for his accomplishments. A Brilliant 6!!
Hadn't thought of this song in years. My mom used to play this album a lot when I was a very small child. It brought back memories of quiet afternoons in Boulder, Colorado circa 1973-74. Thank you.
Sorry, guys, got to maintain--Spinners version captures the energy, excitement, ebullience and true spirit of "coming home"---one of Phillipe Wynne's finest moments.
@joefax530 LOL. Johnny Mathis sings this as a beautiful ballad. The lyrics and the melody have a distinct beauty and melancholy to them. The Spinners' version sounds identical to all of their other songs and bears almost no resemblance to this. They essentially just plugged the words from this song into Rubberband Man. I loved many of the Spinners' songs. But please, to compare their version to this is just silly.
@MrTrashcan1 Thank you for a perfectly beautiful video, this is on my favorte list........looking at rhe old scenes bring back memmories..........of a childhood long ago.....:?)
I never liked Johnny until i heard this song in 1973. then i really came to appreciate him as a true artist. this is a wonderful song of my youth! thank you!
This is a great song; I went on a three week trip to the west coast in '73 and played this album all the way across the country. There is another song on the album called I'D RATHER BE HERE WITH YOU. Will someone PLEASE upload this song? It is so beautiful. I'll be waiting...
By far his best record from the great 1973. Written by Thom Bell and Linda Creed who made some beautiful music together. This post play's slightly to fast though, still a lovely post though. Pax to all from 'SoulBoy' Smith.Xxx.
My husband and I saw him in concert about five years ago. It was fabulous. This has always been one of my favorite Mathis songs, and I have many of them.
I love Johnny Mathis!! I have every album he ever put out and this is my very favorite song. I had to bribe my friend to go with me to see him in concert somewhere around 1974. It was one of the highlights of my life!!
I finally found and purchased the CD, "I'm Coming Home." There's not a track on it that I dislike. I had no idea it was a collector's item. Thanks for making me aware of this CD.
@majaldinho Thanks to uploaders like MrTcan1, I've playlisted 15,000 songs, but this is one of my top 110 Favorites! Had to replace it just now - last version 'died'. My 600 playlists let you find a century of worldwide music by genre, release year or artist. So this is on my Bossa Nova Favorites list, Johnny Mathis list, & 1963 list. A world of music at your fingertips....
I see your id is Português, are you a transplant? Come play my 1973 list. chuck in Arizona
Yeah, I remember hearing this back in the early 1970's in fact I think I have the original LP this was on. It's a great song, thanks for the upload and great work with the pictures too.
@u000drl Not from Oreland, but from the Philly area. Grew up in the city and used to ride what was then the Reading RR. Oreland Station was on the Bethlehem (North Penn) branch of the Reading. I am also a model railroader/train buff, so it was instinctive for me to include pics of local stations in this song. Also check out my posting of Five Hundred Miles by Heaven Bound. I don't remember if Oreland is in there, but there are several SE PA railroad localities.
I've lived this song.
