The unibody solves two problems and worth paying for. All current chips are BGA (ball grid array) meaning they are attached to the mainboard by means of hundreds of tiny solder balls. They cannot tolerate any flexing at all (XBoxes are plagued with this as are many laptops). The solid construction virtually eliminates flexing and dissipates heat - another BGA killer. That is a good reason to get a MacBook. If you prefer non-Mac, make sure you go for the most rigid construction possible.
i got a macbook 08 for 800$ from best buy, id rather get the 2008 then 2009, because yo cant take the ram/battery out of the new one and its almost the exact same intel
I got the unibody macbook just before it got rebranded pro - i wouldve waited but i had exams coming up that required online studying but i dont regret it a bit now. The fact the battery, hard drive and ram are easily removable is a real bonus over an otherwise identical computer :)
@SkipTheNames you can take the ram out of the 2009 unibody. Just take the back plate off, and there they are. I've replaced mine and it does not void the warranty on the macbook but your new ram is not under warranty with apple but you probably know that
"Absolutely fantastic"?! During the last 9 months, I went through 6 (!) 2.4GHz unibody MacBooks. Misaligned keyboard, constant fan, CPU whine, overheating... They had it all and on top of these problems, the original screen (secretly updated in April) was extremely poor. Apple's sales assistant kept telling me that it was the same as in the 15' Pro - but it wasn't.
Finally, I just sold it and bought a 2.26 GHz Pro. Guess what - it has CPU whine and the fan is constantly on. Rotten Apple!
You can install Vista or XP as an individual OS on a seperate Partition so you can decide wich OS you want to load at Startup. Or you can use the Software Parallels wich lets you run XP / Vista - Programs under OSX.
you can use it the same time but you have to buy windows and vmware fusion or paralellsdesktop... you dont have to buy a softwar if you use bootcamp...its in your application folder but you have to restart the computer ....and you have to buy windows of cours....
I love the trackpad, I hate having to use my finger and thumb to click and move the mouse at the same time, the new trackpad is amazing, i'm a pro at it now. I'm also great at typing so the non light on the keyboard was no worries. the only game i play is the sims (and spore) and they work great on this mac. (I have the 2.0 GHz lowest price macbook.
The lack of FireWire is really shaping up to be a non-issue... Much like when Apple stopped offering Floppy Disk Drives on their machines.
(Oh, and if you do need FireWire [400], but you really like this notebook, go pick up an inexpensive USB-to-FireWrie adapter. It'll cost you under $10 and there isn't really a noticable decrease in speed.)
the problem is for audio recording, most people like to record directly to their external, and USB is terrible for time related dated. Still though... record to the internal and then dump it on your USB drive. That's what I'm going to do.
hey john can you help me in choosing my macbook i want to buy a macbook for schooling..im just 15 yrsold..what do you think much preferred to me??and what version of aluminium isn't the 2.0 or the 2.4??tnx..plz replay
hey im in the say situation. I am going with the 2.4GHz and 4GB RAM. I buying that because why not go with the best. hahah. but like the 2.0GHz is goood. like the stock model is goood. but u should get the RAM upgrade. orrrr, if you dont need it now, wait till the summer because they are upgrading to a new operating system! haha. soo yah hope it helps.
I recently bought one and this thing does not get hot, like he said a tiny bit on the upper part, but no where near as hot as the previous version of the macbook pro. Love this machine, I highly recommend it.
they recently updated the imacs, mac minis, macbook pros, ipod shuffles, iphones, and the mac pro so the macbooks will be updated before or during summer, i can guarantee you that.
Soo... i start college this year and i was hoping to get a laptop. I have been looking at the macbooks for some time now and i didn't know wether to get the plastic white macbook or the new aluminium one. (both 2.0 ghz.. i'm not made of money) I'm going to be doing an accounting course if that helps, and anyway i was wondering if you could tell me which macbook would be best for me?
you can avoid the tracpad problem with excel download secreats prefpane and then go to the system tab and then check the "ignore acidental trackpad movement" option and it will fix it
I missed the show ratings cannot see the screen even with a 24" imac and a 22" second Monitor. I give them a +6.5 of the several I have seen. I missed out getting a Apple Touch when I got my iMac in September it came off 9/15 and the stuff was ordered on 9/16. Pissed me off Later
I am a 55 Yr Old student at a Community college up in Siskiyou County. I am getting my AA in Graphic Design. I am getting a macBook Pro for the Graphics speed. I am going to upgrade it with a 500GB HD and 4GB Kit from Other world computer also the HD Upgrade I got came with a kit that will let me use the 320 GB HD I took out as an external drive.... I am using almost 55% of my student loan on it. I have to get MacSpeech for it plus Adobe CS4 Design Prem. Jon I have enjoyed you Video's. Later!
yo man just to let u know about the whole mouse thing, i also have a new 2008 model (MBP) but one thing i have noticed is if u want to use the track pad like the old one u can! just use ur thumb like on the old one! having ur thumb at the bottom of the track pad hile moving the mouse does not activate to figure gestures!
i love my mac but i have to say the only problem i have with it is that i think the two usb ports are too close to eachother. whenever i want to plug in something that is a bit fat, like my sd card reader, i have to unplug whatever is in the other usb port or else i cant get the fat card reader to plug in. that makes it really hard to have two usb devices plugged in at the same time. thats my only gripe about the new macbook.
A common misnomer is that either Macs or Windows PCs are required for school. 90% of the tools used in most schools are all on both platforms or are interchangable with alternatives. Mac development is drying up a little, but both platforms are 100% viable for education.
hey i got one of these to same model. i agree 100% except for that i am taking a liking to the keypad but like you said in the previous movie it does take some getting used to if you need for some reviews send me message :)
Hey Jon nice video! I purchased a Unibody Macbook Pro for high school and so far I love it. I am thaking a video editing class and it works perfect with iMovie 08' and Final Cut Express. It's probably the best purchase I have made!
I got mine a few days ago. Works like a charm. I'm very happy I went for the 2.4Ghz version, once u have a backlight keyboard you never want to go back anymore. Great review :).
Awesome review mate, I am still split as to get the MacBook Air or the Unibody MacBook 2.4 in March or April. So having said that this review from a person I trust totally and respect, I think it has helped me massively, in making my mind up. Take care mate and hope to talk to you soon buddy.
jon says that his macbook pro gets extremely hot which is true. but on his review of it in his early videos when he got it he said its not that bad.
but then again of course if youre going to spend that much money you're going to love the product you bought. BUT dont get me wrong, macbooks are amazing.
I'm a good fan of the glossy because I like the contrast of the colorts, but I don't like the glare of the display whenever it is exposed in the light. However I do plan to get this computer later on this year =]
Nice one Jon, I watched it again, its pretty much the same. How long will it take for your move? You need to do a tour of your apartment when you get there!
I might get one, but my father keeps saying he might get me one! I really need one because I make alot of documents, chatting, and stuff. But If I get it it will be my second computer then! I am using a Dell Inspiron 530-- But I really like this video, it was cool.
hmm, I've got the same notebook and was surprised by your review of the trackpad, only because I've had 0 issues with the trackpad whatsoever (to me, Ctrl+click just makes more sense on a Mac than trying to physically press the bottom right corner of the trackpad)... but hey, we're each entitled to an opinion :).
and trackpad issues aside, I have to agree with everything else you mentioned, I couldn't be happier with mine!
The most annoying thing about the trackpad for me is the loud click noise. I've taken my MacBook to my university library and it was just disturbing. I'm trying to learn tapping instead of clicking now. 8/
There should be a tutorial on YouTube, I saw one, on how to do it. Basically the guy put Tissues under the batter, because thats the bottom of the Trackpad, and it did it for him. Search for it, if I find it, I'll post it.
Nice review, I just got my 2.0 yesterday and im seriously impressed with it, only thing that bugs me is clicking the trackpad to select something you have to press pretty hard. Thinking of getting a mighty mouse as thats my only issue.
Im a new mac user to just getting use to it, but super impressed so far, def worth the money. I was thinking of getting the 2.4, but in the shop with the lights on I could not even see the lights in the keyboard, so opted to upgrade my ram instead
ooh no.. mine is in January.. Im not getting mine till march as I dont want to use a credit card.. kinda seems silly :) I am stuck though if I should get an air instead as Im going to be having a 24" imac as my base/home computer? 7 weeks to decide :)
Wonderful review as always. You're right. For most of us the 2.0 won't be any different from 2.4... If you need to be worried about .4 Ghz difference you'll probably have a dedicated workstation anyway.
if you just want to chop up some family videos or some little videos and edit some spots here here n there you can just use imovie. or imoviehd what ever you might like. if you want advance tools for pro editing then get final cut studio they got lots of video editing tools you can add your own soundtrack and everything and make effects and much more. i think john is using imovie being that he just choping up little videos and putting them on here and add a intro
Thanks, I am using iMovie HD and iMovie HD now but want to try out Final Cut Express (not Studio too expensive.) that's why I am wondering if it would run slow on the new MB.
nah the macbook 2.4ghs handles good with big software like photoshop and final cut i have logic pro 8 and photoshop cs4 install and along with MS office 2008 and theres no lag at all.
Ohh that's nice to hear about!! I was just worrying about the graphics, as the MBP has a discrete card while the MB have an integrated, they said it is fast because it is a nVidia 9400M, so a fast integrated card, but I just don't know how it would compare to the 8600M GT from the previous MBP.

Hey Jon,
Nice review, I just got my 2.0 yesterday and im seriously impressed with it, only thing that bugs me is clicking the trackpad to select something you have to press pretty hard.

Hey Jon, How do you feel about the screensize (too small?) after extended periods of usage? (i.e. a long period of classtime?)

Wonderful review as always. You're right. For most of us the 2.0 won't be any different from 2.4... If you need to be worried about .4 Ghz difference you'll probably have a dedicated workstation anyway.

What do you use for video editing? Do you think Final Cut Express would run fine on it?
Thanks.
sunnz 3 years ago
if you just want to chop up some family videos or some little videos and edit some spots here here n there you can just use imovie. or imoviehd what ever you might like. if you want advance tools for pro editing then get final cut studio they got lots of video editing tools you can add your own soundtrack and everything and make effects and much more. i think john is using imovie being that he just choping up little videos and putting them on here and add a intro

Thanks, I am using iMovie HD and iMovie HD now but want to try out Final Cut Express (not Studio too expensive.) that's why I am wondering if it would run slow on the new MB.
sunnz 3 years ago
nah the macbook 2.4ghs handles good with big software like photoshop and final cut i have logic pro 8 and photoshop cs4 install and along with MS office 2008 and theres no lag at all.
youngaceondeck 3 years ago
Ohh that's nice to hear about!! I was just worrying about the graphics, as the MBP has a discrete card while the MB have an integrated, they said it is fast because it is a nVidia 9400M, so a fast integrated card, but I just don't know how it would compare to the 8600M GT from the previous MBP.
