Early on, The X Factor attracts a lot of viewers who want to see amusingly bad acts, not good acts. As the show progresses, the standard of talent goes up and up until the bad acts are all but eliminated. But wait! If we get rid of all the baddies, that means a lot of people will tune out. Can't have that! Keep a couple in to help the ratings. Suckers.
