He's in the only U.S. history book I pay attention to, Howard Zinn's 'A People's History of The United States.' Guthrie actually inspired Zinn's work. I believe the song Zinn heard was 'Ludlow Massacre,' and, as a history major, Zinn thought, 'Why haven't I heard of the Ludlow Massacre? Why haven't I heard of Woody Guthrie?' Then Zinn wrote a U.S. history book that included those things, our history, the people's history. The rest is just rich man propaganda.
I was lucky enough to have my senior high school history book be Zinn's A People's History of the United States. Thank God I went to a progressive Catholic school where they were allowed to teach the truth about history.
Actually, the slaves sang rhymes, predating Woody. Nas credited them with helping give birth to hip hop on 'Who Killed It?' from his '06 album, 'Hip Hop Is Dead.'
This is a way different version than the one I have from Woody Guthrie's Poor Boy album (Folkways FTS 31010). Some extra verses in this one! Thanks! :-)
@silverpoundcans He's actually singing about the people who'd beat him and his friends, the bosses of the people who'd beat him and his friends, and the people who want more than their share, who'd exploit people and demand they be grateful for the opportunity. Today we call them banksters.
Biting satire from Woody, priceless. No vote, no union, no voice. A mean society, a mean and rigged economic system. Foreclosures? Homeless? Jobless? Too f-in bad. We're just plain mean
Why is woody guthrie not in our history books?

Well, if I can get the fat to hatin' the lean
That'd tickle me more than anything I've seen,
Then get the colors to fightin' one another,
And friend against friend, and brother... and sister against brother,
That'll be just it.

@tasedlak Haha, I was just trying to be funny, bro. Obviously you didn't think it was. I'm also quite sure there were rhymes pre-dating slaves
