I remember seeing a production of this and it got to this part and when the emcee sang the last line I could have sworn I heard the whole audience just go "Ah..."
On a lighter note...I would LOVE to be in that monkey suit...
i feel like herr schultz's characte could be so much more in depth, especially in this scene. the historical background (jew during the rise of the nazis) leads to so much more feeling, and this interpretation is very surface level. i just played this, and im not trying to toot my own horn, but i feel like me and the schneider who played opposite me did it better
I haven't fallen this hard for a fictional character in a long time. I'd marry him in a heart beat. The things I'd do to him. The things he'd do to me. Oh yes!
@gaben2n I dont think its ment that way. I think its mocking the nazis, making fun of them. and humor is in fact a very powerfull weapon. ok, making fun of hitler and his men would not have stopped them but maybe, just maybe made them feel like the fools they where. but back then people where probobly too terrified of them to do so. and I understand that of course, but never the less, humor is powerfull
@kyrastube I disagree. It's definitely meant to make you feel like that. 1) That's how Kander and Ebb are in their musicals. You leave feeling changed, and kinda like a bad person. 2) The end of this show, the whole purpose of it? It's exactly like this song, you laugh through it and then you just feel sick when Emcee walks out in his stripes. 3)It's meant to show how easy it is to influence others to look at people like animals like the Nazis did with their propaganda.-I've run out of space. :)
Love that they have somewhat heavy girls in the chorus too. That is what chorines of the time really looked like. Look at Dietrich in Blue Angel for instance. She was the epitome of German beauty for that time. When she came to America the Hollywood studios made her become skinny.
I was skeptical of Alan, knowing how gross he made the role, but I am growing irrevocably fond of the way he keeps you on the edge between hate and love of his performance. Very nicely done.
Emcee is wonderful ! Full of glee, funny, demonic, but also in his very own special way sexy as well. The part of Emcee has never been the same, nor has it ever been done so exceedingly well. Alan ROCKS !
Such an incredibly written scene into one of the most stunning, ironic musical sequences ever written or performed in the theatre. Just stellar all-around.
i think this song, along with 'i don't care' really showcases his talent the best...you just get a glimmer of it in the opening number, but those 2 songs really give you an idea of just how legen-wait for it-dary his voice is
I now appreciate the way that Alan Cumming sings, he's got a surprisingly good voice that didn't shine through with all the other songs he did. *applause*
I just saw the movie a few days ago and was blown away by Joel Grey, so it's great to be able to watch Alan Cumming's interpretation and be just as blown away. I don't care for this production as much as the movie (I'm a huge Fosse fan) but Alan and Fraulein Schneider are amazing!
Not only is he absolutely lovely and incredibly talanted, but he plays a good Emcee too. The mixture of his childish innocence and the looks of pure wickedness that cross his face! I saw the Cabaret in London a couple years ago and their Emcee was fantastic, hideous and grotesque, but Alan Cumming's Emcee, balanced between the coy mischivious child and the black voyeuristic cruelty of the devil himself, gives the character a depth and mysteriousness which the doll-like Joel Grey never ventured.
To be clear, the message I got from the song was that it was making fun of the Nazi's stupid views toward the "other" ethnic groups....
Last night when I posted my comment I was under the impression that everyone else got that meaning too, but according to the imdb, that's not the case.
This version and alan are amazing, but I have to say the recent West end Cabaret did the "If you could see her" much better. I hate julian clary but it was still beautiful and sad. But on evrything else this is amazing.
So it wasn't actually cut from the production, just from the TV version? 'Cos it's quite ashame to cut three of the best and well known songs of the musical from the actual show.
that would be correct -- they had to do some minor adjustments to fit the TV time span they were given. happens all the time, which is quite a shame, especially for us theatre geeks who can't afford to see a live, b'way show.
Yeah it is a shame, but I suppose that if they have to cut it down. I would have personally cut one of the lesser known songs to be honest, but aside from Alan Cumming and the lady who plays Fraulein Schneider, I didn't really like the cast, paticularly the Cliff and Sally; I really didn't feel her cracking at the seams was enough throughout the play and it felt out of place when she performed "Cabaret".
Alan Cumming is the best, no matter what lol. Schneider was excelent too. I thought Cliff was okay -- i can tell it's hard for him to act an unhappy&confused emotion, so it comes off as anger, which i think he didn't portray as well as other productions i've seen. In fact, he practically showed the same emotion until the end of the show. Sally -- she had her good moments, but yes, she was more-so overacting the part than actually being the character. Herr Shultz played a very lovable old man.<3
agreed. i also am very sad that they cut "money money money" cuz i really like that one too. in fact, i'm sad that they had to cut songs in general JUST for this production.
That's because they weren't trying to make the movie. It's called a revival for a reason. I love both very much. But since this was the televised version they cut several songs as well.
Ever since I saw the movie, I wanted so much to see Alan's version of "If You Could See Her"... Thank you for putting this up. So much. I LOVE this song. <3
