KDE 4 us faster than 3.5 (for me) and I am using a PII 650, 512MB RAM on ArchLinux.
Arch is quite fast though; when compared to Ubuntu.. so Good luck buddy!

is kde 4 faster than 3.5? i have 900 mhz duron and kde 3.5 runs a bit slow, does kde 4 will be faster?

go to system settings > desktop > all effects and search for login effect or somethink
