Now that you have the kinks all worked out, have you considered making others custom made for sale? I'm in an industry where something like this would help me stand out, so i would be very curious if you would be interested and if so your price.
@Aamelron - I'd love to make more and better hats, but regrettably, LED hat development has taken a back seat since I became a father to twins a couple of years ago. Weekends and evenings are now too short and I'd need a financial incentive to offset lost daytime income as a (freelance) software developer. So not out of the question, but not cheap.
Incredible job! I'm a comedian who needs to do promotional work for a comedy club in order to get extra stage time. Is there any way you could help me by explaining how to build my own? This would offer me a great advantage in attracting customers to the club. Thank you very much in advance for any instructions you're willing to share!!!!
@ColdCruelButt - thanks; the most detailed instructions I have are on the website linked from the video description - and I'm not sure I'd follow them exactly if I made the hat again.
If you have as computer already, the tools cost maybe a hundred pounds, parts maybe 50-100. The cost is mostly in the time spent constructing the thing, i.e. [waves hands] a lot.
Certainly, although to be commercially available, it's either going to be very expensive, or built in a Nike sweatshop, or I'm going to have to invent a way of mass producing it. (On this topic, if anyone knows how to get hold of a small sheet of copper-laminated polyimide for a reasonable price let me know).
If you could add some sensors, you could have some cool real time effects, like a "digital liquid" that sloshes 3axix accelerometer, a real time analizer (RTA) or oscilliscope with a microphone, or a wifi signal strength detector.
Still the über-est hat I've ever seen.
(PS: I think you've got some dark LEDs in there!-better check)
Thank you. I was hoping to add a microphone or some other sensors, but need to do a lot more RTFM first. I might get it done one day. My craziest idea was to incorporate an EEG circuit I'd seen somewhere (lost the link) - so people could look at the hat and see your state of mind. I'm not sure how feasible that idea is, however (especially with so much electromagnetic noise being generated nearby). Maybe I'd have to line the hat with tinfoil.
how many led's did u use?

oh, and there are always a few loose connections on some of the LEDs, keeping them all working is a bit like painting the Forth bridge.
