I don't like how a lot of guys turn their back on their opponent after they score in kumite. That's bad practice, bad manners, and bad luck if you thought you hit but didn't.
I like how people put down traditional martial arts, and then speak highly of MMA. All while not realizing most GOOD MMA practitioners have a foundation in a traditional art.
Most on here that put down TMA and talk up MMA, Muay Thai, and BJJ usually are just fanboys that have no training in either, and automatically assume because they watch MMA they are capable fighters. Fact is that attitude WAS NOT prevalent with the real fighters.
I trained in boxing, muay thai hybrid, and bjj for a long while. Most of those fighters gave other styles respect. My BJJ instructor (pedro sauer lineage) was a shorin-ryu instructor too.
It may not look like it to those who don't actually study martial arts, but he is using power under control. Not intentionaly trying to hurt his partner. If he wanted to it would be an easy clean one hit and the fight would be over. Green/black belt
im just gonna say for all u people who do not show the respect us true martial artist's show and recieve then i truly feel sorry for you, you do not understand that if you met these sort of people in the street without a weapon for you cowards out there, then you would honestly get anialated end of story Mitch 1st dan
I agree with you.. no matter how much we respect MMA fighters, and try to make them understand that there is a deeper meaning behind traditional Karate-do, or traditional martial arts in general, they still feel like they have to degrade us and prove that they can beat someone for no reason at all...
I am now enlightened that it takes a 3 year JKA instructors course and the very finest technique, attitude and courage, admired universally across all styles, not to mention Takushoku and shiai, to become a "wuss" and a "pussy". I am sure we've all been on the end of a badly controlled technique and have been guilty of the same. Look at some JKA competition footage if you don't think the Shotokan punches and kicks are effective.
Being able to fight from the floor as in the first few techniques has probably saved my life. This may just be a demonstration, but its also an ancient tradition and something you can learn alot from. So don't knock it.
Its a display hence its overall performance. But at look the jumping ushirogeri at 2:57. It makes hard contact on the opponent, nearly knocking him out. See how he lands/rolls, watch his head. Kawasoe knows he's hurt and takes a moment to check. The opponent (who is incidentally one of the greatest and humblest Karate ka in the world) shakes it off and continues. Whilst a choreographed demo it hints at the awesome power Shotokan can deliver but exercised with control which takes far more ability
obviously the negative comments are from blokes who haven`t the mentality or the balls to dedicate themselves to the shotokan martial arts discipline-it`s not all qbout killing people so stop standing on the sidelines boys watching chuck norris videos and put your money were your mouth is!
u don't know the real fight. when u kill someone, u'll have power, speed and killing mind of course. jka is non contact, so they've never got the full power hit and don't know how awful it is. that is only an art, no power, no speed and no killing mind. if u really believe it, u'll be killed. i know many japanese admit shotokan is not effective to real combat.
First of all the marines arent trained in this, my friend is in the marines and they taught him judo not shotokan, secondly shotokan would be worth shit on the battle field, from what i see in this video.
shotokan has the most influential in fighting skills especially in defence...in real life situations, they would provide to be most useful becoz of the instant reaction dat a person might have learned b4
keep on punching air buddy, come back and comment after you run into one of these "pussy" shotokan practictioners. And yes, the Marines do use some Karate tech. along with judo, and various other forms of the martial arts.
If you look into a lot of the mannerisms of Karate the defensiveness is apparent. As seen in this video, the instructor is defending from a sitting position. Many aspects such as the ready position, final move of each kata, and the kumite practice demonstrate this. That said, really good karate and other asian boxing styles can in fact win real fights in and outside of the ring.
Karate is a defensive art. Boxing, Greko-roman, and sports like Muy Thai are offensive arts. Because of this difference in philosophy, the offensive arts will generally prevail in a ring style fight as the defensive art practitioner has to be better than the offensive fighter. A poor boxer is better than a poor karateka.
unpractical knife techniques, terrible bunkai(no one will attack you with oi/gyaku tsuki and wait for you to counter).yeah shotokan,a crap style

A demonstration is exactly that - a DEMONSTRATION of Karate technique.
Of course a group of enemies would not stand around while you take care of one person at a time.
Just watch and admire the skills of these masters while they are still here.

As for art, it is beautiful. But as for real combat, yes, we must doubt it. If they can do it anytime and anywhere, Japanese must always win K-1:-P
