He's gay from how I view it. He openly states he didn't enjoy it and didn't understand what the"fuss" was all about. I'm not sure if he's realised he's gay but is trying to ignore it or is not quite aware of it but I believe Julia understood completely.

In the other clip where they have lunch together after he returns, he tells Julia he doesn't want to live in a world of make believe and acting which makes me think he'd either discovered or accepted his homosexuality while abroad.
