  • In Ewigkeit

  • Gangstarappers have killed more people than Wagner...

  • Thumbs up if you got goosebumps... especially at the "Halleluya!" :)

  • In my opinion this is the most beautiful version that I've ever heard. As a cynical OAP, it brought tears to my eyes. I hope it is played when they bury me in some English Churchyard.

  • @hostajohn1 I agree

  • So great is God's generosity that he gave such genius to a moral monster like Wagner.

  • Sometimes I sit here and wonder how something so otherworldly can be put onto manuscript. It's times like these when I stop caring how Wagner was as a man and realise his incredible sensitivity when it comes to 'music-drama'. Tannhauser for me is his greatest opera, and hearing it as a boy changed my life totally and I couldn't be more grateful. Thankyou, Richard, for letting me be one of the lucky ones who can hear your music for what it is, not what angry people perceive it to be.

  • @Aydam161 Thank you for helping me put words to such a perspective.

  • TENIA QUE SER WAGNER ALEMAN PARA DARLE ESA MAJESTUOSIDAD A ESTA OBRA LA MEJOR OPERA DE WAGNER

  • c'est mono hélas...

  • Que hermoso pero a la vez macabro

  • this was in my grandmotherrs funeral

  • wagner, king of the chinstrap beard

  • Lizst was his cousin

  • @cordfluidnevoie his parent-in-law

  • Europe!

  • We're here for the magnificence of Wagner's music.

Those with some issues/agendas should find some other platforms where to discuss on, don't you think?!

  • @piqni lol!! SOOO right. Who cares if this composer or artist was anti-semetic or that one a wife-killer (like Gesualdo), or another, a pedophile?? Its their ART that;s their true legacy to the world: what they did in their private life is completely irrelevant - especially if they're dead: if you support living artists who are nasty deviants, that;s probably not a good thing - but once an artist is deceased, who cares? You're not supporting their belief systems or actions - simply their art.

  • Glory... that is whats missing today... :/

  • M y goodness,so beautiful!!!!

  • Thumbs up if you first heard this in the Bugs Bunny cartoon "What's Opera Doc."

  • Gesamptkunstwerk

    thats the bottom line

  • I agree! Talk about Wagner's music and what a genius he was to iintegrate all elements of music and stage design in a truly magnificent cultural contribution that will last forever!

  • Performed an arrangement for brass quintet of this piece at my friend's funeral. Beautiful piece. Beautiful service. Will miss him.

  • I have the same problem being a fan of Richard Strauss, too!

  • Wagner is GOD of music!

  • Only a fearful, primitive mind could not appreciate the beauty and power in this work.

  • @prospectus91 But Wagner invokes and stirs the primitive feelings of men, with his music.

  • Even if you don't like some of the aspects of Wagners life you have to realize his music genius ang the great music he wrote and the amount he wrote.

  • @tankerm48 Exactly. People need to separate the art from the artist.

  • Wagner.

Was a controversial man, but a genius composer.

  • as john cleese once said in fawlty towers "whatever you do, don't mention the war...i did once, but i think i got away with it"....lol

  • A spectacular performance of a beautiful piece of music.

  • Lohengrin hat eine opiatische, narkotische Wirkung. Aber Tannhäuser ist auch nicht schlecht. ^^

  • I too get goosebumps from this song. I'm not sure if this or Donner's "Heda! Hedo"" from Das Rheingold moves me more.

  • This gives me goosebumps. The sound quality does this the justice it deserves.

  • Now I understang: in this stage version, the chorus sings "Beglueckt Darf Nun Dich", from the beginning of Act III, and then jumps to the end of the opera, when the female chorus enters singing "Heil! Der Gnade Wunder Heil!".

  • This recording is really beautiful, but I have a doubt: in this version, there is a female chorus that sings a beautiful passage at '", and I don't remember of listening to it in the opera. Why? Is there another version? I remember somethign about a "Paris version", but it's not usual to see this specification.

  • Who is the conductor here?

  • es igual que la obertura xD, es genial

  • Sublime. Absolutely tusculum.

  • In dark times I listen to this piece. The whole Opera is brilliant, but this segment in particular has always pushed deeply in me and given me strength when I've needed it. It is majestic to say it simply.

  • You can 'only mean one thing about this music: great!

  • what a crescendo!!

  • A total work of art, that's for sure!

  • This kicks the crap out of just about everything else: Aida's Grand March = not even close, Fucik's Entry of the Gladiators = Clown Music, Mussorgsky's Bald Mountain/Boris Godunov = Barney/PBS/Elevator background noise, Absolute genius!

  • My mother listen metal , who is scare now ?

  • Once more ye fair, flowr'y meadows I greet My Pilgrim's staff henceforth may rest Since Heaven's sweet peace is within my breast. The sinner's `plaint on high was heard On high was heard and answered by the Lord The tears I laid before His shrine Are turned to hope and joy divine. O Lord eternal praise be Thine! The blessed source of Thy mercy overflowing On souls repetant seek Ye, all-knowing Of hell and death, I have no fear O my Lord is ever near Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Forevermore
  • BRAVISSSIMO::::::::::IT MAKE ME FEEL CHILLS

  • Is this by Eugene Ormandy?

  • @EthanFilms I would suspect not. don't believe Ormandy ever conducted at Bayreuth. in fact, I don't think he did Opera at all although he did do "concert pieces" from Wagner overtures and preludes

  • Il n'y a rien de plus beau qu'un choeur d'homme !!!C'est l'ascension finale vers la perfection!!!!Je suis subjuguée et une fois de plus,....j'ai pleuré comme une madeleine !!!

  • Wagner <3

  • im sephardi no is problem

  • Que c'est beau un choeur d'homme....les voix féminines en paraissent ancore plus ....légères....

  • This music has at least as much energy as heavy metal, if not more!

  • Just as this brings great joy to me, might it bring great joy to others. When it no longer does, western civilisation is over.

  • Love the song! Do you happen to know when this was recorded?

  • OK, I'm calling a moratorium on all comments about Hitler and antisemitism. If you want to talk about Hitler, or Wagner's racism, or have a problem with Jews in general, take it somewhere else. You people are sick, and I'm tired of deleting obnoxious comments.

  • @violinthief . Well said.

  • @violinthief Bravo!!!

  • @violinthief I couldn't agree with you more. Sadly there appear to be a selection of sick people on this iste which is supposed to be dedicated to listening to classical music. We have an obnoxious political party here in the UK who delight in similar racist views and comments. Their world must consist of living in the dark. Wagner's music has to taken for what it is an amazing creation of instrumental and vocal music, thank you for your excellent recording.

  • @violinthief

What idiot brings up something trivial like politic when listening to such divine music.

  • giusto, lo sostengo anch'io... Per me Wagner resta sempre un grande... e pensare che certi pezzi li ascolto mentre prego!!!!

  • This is one of the greatest things I have ever heard.

  • GRANDE GRANDE GRANDE GRANDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE WAGNER ES EL!!!!1

  • Very disappointing that the comment section has been flooded with this detritus.

Masterful work by Wagner and a great performance by the orchestra/chorus.

  • I love nazi marches and I love Wagner, but I am not a nazi. Pinochet even took some old nazi march, the french foreign legion also took an old nazi march, doesn't make them nazis either!

  • I agree! Just told somebody a few days ago to listen to this on the Ipod with Bose in-ear headphones and yes, you will see God!

  • I think that the thing is, Wagner was a rabid anti-semite as well as the Nazis. If he had been alive, he would have gone along with everything that the Nazis did- don't forget, his operas were part of the myth that pushed forward the idea of the Master Race- all based on Teutonic legends. That being said, I still like a lot of his MUSIC.

  • As a jew myself I don't hold it against wagner. Anti-semitism was still the flavour of the day during wagner's lifetime. Up until 1870 the catholic church still endorsed violence against jews as punishment for the suffering inflicted on jesus (which itself has yet to be proven that it actually happened.)

And the fact that Hitler liked Wagner's music doesn't diminish it in any way. Hitler also liked dogs. Does that make all dog owners evil?

Enjoy Wagners music for what it is: Greatness

  • @Kuner1 I think your prosecutions until 1870 is what has yet to be proven.

  • @Kuner1 It is a regrettable period for the Church and whomever may have been hurt by such attitudes that you mentioned. I believe that many of us, Jews and Christians, have moved past the prejudice that prevailed then, Today, as Israel faces the greatest threat of all, annihilation, Christians are united in unconditional support for her defense. It is the secular left that is trying to drive the wedge between us.

  • @Kuner1 Well said!

  • My mom always said don't have an argument with someone who is crazy, because to people on the outside, they can't tell who the crazy party is.

Wagner was utilized by the Nazi's because of the Operas written that use German folklore, not christianity. So it was a handy tool. Wagner was long in the grave before the Nazis came to power. So to call him a compatriot or ally of the Nazi's is just untrue and intellectually dishonest.

  • The problem with some about this track is that this is an absolutely beautiful tune, by a German composer, which apparently Hitler liked. It is rousing, full of hope, inspiring, proud. It involves struggle, endeavour, steadfastness and the nationalistic pride of surmounting adversity but still remaining hopeful and happy. It acknowledges the strenght of man and woman equally then unites them and strenghtens them....

  • So what if President Hitler Liked Wagner?

Other great men like him too, but that does not make them more poular.

  • Breathtaking! So wonderful that it brought tears to my eyes!

  • Everytime I listen to Wagner I want to attack Poland - Woody Allen, jewish comic

  • If you played the music in an orchestra you will find it 100x better. Especially if you play a brass instrument.

  • I get so moved and mysteriously nostalgic by this chorus. I´m shure this is the song we all going sing waking through the gates of heaven.

About the nostalgica; is there any national anthem that sounds similar? An anthem no longer played ´cause the nation no longer is?

  • I speak German and I personally decided to get sheet music for it. The text read that it is a very dark and scary time, but even with how bad it seems now, god will save us and we shall go to heaven, it has nothing to do with Jews. he did not hate Jews, and neither do i, i just happen to be german, that doesnt mean im a nazi. as a matter of fact, my two best friends are jewish. always remember:"there are bad apples in every bunch, and good ones"

  • @chazmataz1000

    wise, true words

  • @chazmataz1000 You must not have read some of Wagner's books. He blatantly makes condescending remarks about Jewish composers some of whom helped him when he was a struggling composer. He even blames some Jews for his early fracases. I personally didn't know Wagner myself so I have no way of knowing, but I have read some of his works and some of his viewpoints are racist. That has nothing to do with music however. Wagner is on of the greatest composers, and has made great contributions to music.

  • Music doesnt know hate or racist bounderies because music is universal......

  • NEVERTHELESS,the prophecy is GREED DESTROYS,ancient niebelungen legend paralled germany's annihilation,THE FIRE RAINED DOWN,AND THEY WERE REBORN,dresden, some 200-300,000,civilians,the vain greed of the GODS(EMPIRE,KAISERS,BILLIONAIRE BANKING AND ROYALTY),IT IS TOO FRIGHTENING HOW THE ANCIENT LEGENDS OF GERMANY CAME BACK TO HAUNT HER.

  • "Hail! Hail! Hail to the miracle of mercy! Redemption is conferred upon the world. It came to pass in the holy hour of night, the Lord manifested Himself in a miracle. The barren staff in a priest's hand He decked with fresh green: for the sinner in the fires of hell redemption shall blossom thus afresh! Throughout all lands let it be proclaimed to him who has found forgiveness by this miracle! High above all the world is God, and His Mercy is no mockery! " Where is the politics ?
  • The crescendo is wonderful !

  • I am a nazi and I love Wagner. His music is elite. You know it. I know it. The jews are just jealous. When they are not busy being nation wreckers that is.

  • @iscandar74 i am not a Nazi and i still find this music beautiful. music should always come before your ideals and views.

  • @iscandar74 You cannot be a nazi, the nazi empire doesn't exist anymore.

  • This Hitler stuff is ridiculous. YES, I can say that in my music history classes we have discussed that Wagner was anti semitic- that is true. BUT, he did not share hitlers views. He actually had jewish friends. It's ridiculous that we let the man's views, no matter how much we disagree with them, over shadow the incredible music he created.

  • I think Youtube should ban the usage of the word "Hitler" on Wagner's videos.

  • @piqoni Can´t you mail that suggestion to Youtube.

  • Que boludos, yo tengo un pastor aleman y por ello soy nazi, que boludos al cuadrado. Viva la buena musica.

    Nestor

  • You people with ridiculous Hitler-o-phobia should know, that not only Hitler had a great taste for music, he also was a vegetarian, absolutist and atheist. He wore Hugo Boss, and drank Fanta along with the rest of the nazis. He inspired the Volkswagen "Beetle" and actually by accident named it. So here's the list which stuff to avoid. lol Oh yeah and of course all sort of philosophy, and modernist art, are on the no-list too.

  • Transcendental music! Awesome!

  • We are into the highest sphere of the music, and you, my friends, keep talking ........

  • Who cares if Hitler was a fan of Wagner, the composition is wonderful.

  • Now that --- that is music!

  • Rediculous discussion...of course Wagner was antisemite, but before all he was a fanatic german nationalist and patriot, in the same way Brahms was. His music is simply expression of the highest culture on this planet.....

  • Himmler once said; "just hearing that word [culture] makes me want to reach out to my gun" (...) why might that be? There is nothing `cultural about the National Socialist party because Germany belongs to those that made it the best country and civilization Europe. Not to the state, not to the elite - but to the German people of all races, colors and creed....

  • @rsiano I doubt Himmler ever said that.

  • We are on a journey don't look back

  • Hitler wore Hugo Boss, Hugo Boss is evil!

  • wonderful

  • It's a women's choir for sure singing. The sound is higher and a bit shrill at points. The Solti recording uses a treble choir, which has a softer sound.

Listen to both back to back, and you'll see what I mean.

  • among all my favourite pieces of music ,

classic and otherwise, the Pilgrim's Chorus is the

one i would choose to die to.

never fails to turn me inside out, and leave me

in shreds for minutes after it has finished.

  • @gremlingrump Drink a couple glasses of champagne, lay down on the floor face-up, play Pilgrim's Chorus at high volume, and meet God. Actually I'm an atheist, but nothing gets me closer to God than this.

  • Ok he did not like jews but he still composed good music.

  • We played this in James Monroe high school orchestra for graduation in the Bronx and introduced me to GREATNESS

  • In a general sense, why do people seem to get so wound up about the political leanings of the people that entertain them? It is riduculous to refuse to listen to Wagner because he was an anti-Semite, just like people who don't like guns shouldn't stop watching Charleton Heston for that reason.

We don't care about the political leanings of our plumbers or mechanics or the pizza-delivery guy. Why care so much about entertainers' personal beliefs?

  • "Wagner was that or the other.... blah blah blah...."

Wagner was a God. This piece would be enough to found a religion. That's all!

  • Very tutonic

  • The soprano part is sung by ladies. A boys choir has a completely different sound to it than this.

@manzanadecoco I do like the sound of a boys choir but if you don't think ladies can sound this good then you've sadly missed out on some great performances.

  • I asked 10 months ago whether this has an LP source, since both of my CDs of this recording have a defect around 1:35.

Or perhaps there has been a recent CD reissue?

  • @manzanadecoco My LP from 40 years ago has the same defect, I am so familiar with it that I feel something's 'missing' when I listen to other recordings!

To me this is the greatest piece of choral music ever written....

  • I also like some Nazi songs tgough I am Russian but I think Wagner was the best composer - he joined spirit with music not like any other composer.

  • What the Hell does Adolf Hitler have to do with Wagner? Wagner was long dead before Hitler ever came to power. So Hitler liked his music. So what? I like some of the Nazi marching songs, that doesnt make me a Nazi.

  • actually, Wagner was very antisemitic. He probably would have been a Nazi if he lived at the right (wrong?) time. To this day, Wagner's operas can't be performed in Israel. That doesn't make his music any less beautiful though.

  • @bob2274

But why have Wagner so many jewish friends, according to wikipedia?

  • @bob2274 Your information is out of date. Wagner is performed in Israel. Wagner didn't hate Jews; he hated Meyerbeer. Wagner would have opposed the Nazis. It's not Wagner's fault that Hitler liked good music. Hitler also liked dogs. Is that a problem?

  • Many of the Nazi marching songs was created before the Nazis even Wenn alle untreu Werden was created in 1814

  • @orestesisa nah, but you see wagner was a raving jew-hater and that was part of hitler and other nazis liking of him, apart from the theme in his operas of course, but assholes make great music all the time... I love this piece myself and I'm as leftwing as you can get, even by norwegian standards:)

  • Actually, this is exactly as it appears in the opera, except that these are two excerpts put together. The first half is the male "Pilgrims' Chorus" immediately followed by the finale of the whole opera (when the ladies start singing).

  • Children, not ladies

  • the sound quite a bit like women to me. not children.

  • @tohtorigyro Knabenchor. It's a boys choir. Ladies don't sound that good.

  • Forget politics - this is the most uplifting piece of music ever written.

  • CinnAlla: I agree.

  • @CinnAlla - Thank you!!!

  • What scares me most in this music, even for being extremely beautiful, is the fact of her being the favorite music of Adolf Hitler. I have used it in one of my classes overriding the male choir along with some of Hitler's speeches and images of the concentration camp of Auschwitz. The work was good, the problem is that some of my students could not get to sleep after I had made the video. But I must admit, the music is beautiful! Bravo!

  • why would you do this to wagner ? nazis came after him.

  • So what if Hitler listened to this and liked it? Does that somehow make it bad, and even more ridiculous, "scares" you? That has nothing to do at all with the music. Hitler may have also like sunshine and warm weather too, so does that make it summer day bad and "scare" you?

  • Hitler was a vegetarian, therefore all vegetarians are evil. :-)

  • @violinthief Hitler liked blondes XD

  • @violinthief jajajajaja great response xDDD

  • @violinthief

Hitler enjoyed breathing oxygen. Therefore, breathing oxygen is evil. :-P

  • @violinthief

Well, yes they are. It is commons knowledge the human body needs various kinds of meats, fatty meat, protein rich meat, fish meat with omega 3 and potassium. People who pretend this is not true are liars, fundamentalists and most likely hate themselves enough to slowly kill themselves through starvation.

  • @croscream so do the cows and fish get those nutrients from thin air?? they get them from the grass at the bottom of the food chain...

  • @violinthief Hitler is great.

  • @violinthief

oh, is that what happened to me?

  • @violinthief And absolutists & atheists! ;)

  • @violinthief I heard he was Vegan, even worse!

  • @violinthief Seeing all the thumbs up this comment got, one can only wish for more "vegetarians" in the world.

  • @violinthief Hitler had a moustache all people with moustaches are Evil. FACT

  • @violinthief good point.

  • @bucky1900 Don't forget that a large part of Hitler's war effort was funded by " W" s grandfather Prescott Bush and his central bank buddies

  • @bucky1900 i think *somehow*, we're all forgetting, that anyone that did what Hitler did, has to have been quite messed up in the head!

  • @bucky1900 You´re right...

  • @bucky1900 Wagner and Hitler shared the exact same beliefs about race and Jews. Wagner expresses his beliefs through his music emotionally. He even writes about it.

  • Sometimes Wagner is a little too dramatic for me, but this is beautiful.

  • Soul of the German nation!

  • I wish I knew what they are saying

  • @Lillo...: google it!

  • darn the looney toons: "What's Opera Doc?" ruined this for me, I giggle every once in a while.

  • hahahahah I know what you mean...But with me it was with the SImpsons and Shining- they made a whole episode with homer going crazy in a mansion and whenever I see Jack Nicholson doing that face...I have to hold myself back!hahahaha

  • Powerful in all ways

  • The whole work of Richard Wagner brings to light the vigour of the german soul. I love Wagner and I love this people that couldn't be bent even after their homeland had been destroyed and burned out through the centuries by their neighbours and other people moving in the darkness. Hail to this country and Halleluja in Ewigkeit for Wagner

  • You're right, the greatest dramatist ever and a lover of his own inheritance. The day has to come when Germany's history has to be rewritten and brought tolight and justice. As musician and a history fan, I know that a lot of evil lies have been written about this country, which is in contradiction with all the great philisiphers, musicians and women and men of literature they have brought to life. Brave warriors too

  • Agree. Good words.

  • I agree wholeheartedly. God bless this mighty country and its people. I get chills everytime I hear this.

  • Exquisite!!!!

  • devastante

  • Best version of the Pilgrim Chorus.

  • Great performance,thx for posting !!!

  • absolutely divine

  • Very nice

  • Wonderful. How can they sing so well with those tattered cloaks and bloody feet.

    The hallelulia is breathtaking.

  • This is an LP?? Because the CD transfer has a defect at around 1:35, and I am not hearing it here.

  • I know this recording. But at Youtube it's never safe to identify the source of anything, just in case. Yes, this is the best version of the Pilgerchor that I know, and I panicked when I heard this CD was out of print and I quickly bought a 2nd copy. It's truly breathtaking, isn't it? Like you've just arrived in Heaven, or something.

  • If you know the CD, could you give fuller details? :) I'd love to keep an eye out for it in second-hand shops, etc.

  • Love this, and adore the late Great Richard Wagner.

  • unique and superb

  • Best song I ever head.

  • Wagner is the most genius composer we have had ever... .Thanks!
