  • thats a fancy version of a stump vise..Very cool. We make crude ones in less than a minute, but they never look like that! Great work.

  • Is this what drunk lumberjacks do when they are bored?

  • my neighbors an old timber faller , he'd probably like this

  • Very smart, thanks for sharing. Good video clip

  • As an instructor, presumably in how to operate a chainsaw safely, shouldn't he be starting the chainsaw properly (on the ground) instead of a modified drop start?

  • @4doctorjohn He holds the rear handle of the saw between his knees, which steadies the saw while you crank. It beats bending over every time, and it is safe.

  • That's really cool!

  • We make these all the time. My grandfather showed me how to make these 30yrs ago, just not as fancy. We will make one in the area we will be working first, it saves on the back and it keeps the saw nice and steady to do your maintenance. Don't let your saw get dull, sharpen it when the saw isn't doing the work for you.

  • great !!!

  • very cool!

  • I could have sharpened the chain twice in the time it took to cut that

  • Impressive !

This reminds me of the quotation from Albert Einstein - "Imagination is better than knowledge."

  • maybe if I was workin this site for a month in snowcover....dude, carve bears..cut stumps.

  • u goota be kidding me!!

  • What do I do if my chain is too dull to make the vise?

  • @ronnyb1968 HEY,, nice one !!! HA HA...

  • @ronnyb1968 You generally make the vise when the chain is about to dull, not after =P

  • File it on the ground like most people?

  • I LIKE THAT WAS COOOL VERY SMART

  • Soon as you get that built, maybe you should use it to sharpen that saw....

  • @regorekrub Chainsaws aren't made to rip wood, just crosscut.... that's the big reason why is seems so dull...

He's also trying to be precise...

  • @savageboner You can buy chains specifically for ripping.

  • good idea :)

  • LOVE the Dolmar 5100 speed!!!!! That is one sweet little saw! The vice is pretty intuitive, especially if you will be using that area for a while. Nice work!

  • This is a handy feild repair, you'll save money and maybe you can cut it off the stump and take it home after you sharpen your saw and use it many time after

  • Save on buying an expensive chain for awhile

  • in the time it took to do that, i would already be done with one side of my chain....this is not a joke........real arborists dont have time for this kind of gimmik. but hey, have fun.

  • @preshur yeah, but you only have to do it once, it wont disappear after you're done unless you make it disappear

  • If you choose a small diameter tree, and just bore the saw through the middle, it's much quicker and works as well

  • its to low!.lol

  • good thing to that saw seemed dull. lol my GOL instructer taught us this in the 3rd class

  • Nice vise, like davidn23skidoo said, why didnt I think of that.

  • Just how many chains are you gonna carry with you all day? You carry 20 loops all day like a dumb$h1t, and I'll just sharpen one! Think McFly think!

  • is this the "Game Of Logging"?

  • god its painful watching a blunt saw, neat stump vice

  • thats great mate good work, looks great cant wait to try it, I do chairs on stumps I will have to video it and post it.

  • I don't get it. Just swap chains...

  • This can be very handy on the landing at a logging job for sharpening saws, and adjusting the carburetor if that is needed. Filing a saw to keep it sharp takes just a few minutes if you have a good place to work.

  • I cut felling wedges all the time, but never a vise?

  • Heh that is actually quite smart! Funny, never saw it before. Altough just putting the saw in between your legs might be a bit faster.

  • @Mueiwark Yea, also more comfortable than leaning over that yuppie invention

  • How did you think that one up??

  • I just took the pictures. This is one of those things that makes you slap your forehead and say "Why didn't I think of that?!"

  • @DavidN23Skidoo i was just gonna say that ha ha ha
