Oh, here, I'll get it...what you meant to say was "headcutting", something of a tradition in the bars of Chicago, for example. Kind of a rite of passage for the young guns, to try and hang with the big guys and gain their respect. Yes, that was very much a competitive situation. I'm not aware of either of these guys getting into one of those showdowns, but maybe so.
The so-called 'competition' doesn't exist; that's something we all like to make up. They're just playing and having fun, since they are friends. Besides which, I've read where Clapton said if he feels that somebody on stage is acting like it's a competition, he just backs off. That's not music, and there's no point.
Great clip. I'm a big fan of both Beck & Clapton & think they are about equal when it comes to talent so when i hear people say that Beck is destroying Clapton in this video, I have to shake my head in disbelief. First off, Clapton is for the most part, playing rhythm & he is letting Beck play lead so of course Beck is gonna outshine him in this song. Also, they are both friends so it's not like there was a contest going on here. Just 2 friends playing together onstage, that's all.
The series of Secret Policeman's Balls are in aid of Amnesty International, which fights to free political prisoners around the world. This is from the final night of 4: 12 September 1981. Mo Foster: bass (I played bass on the 9 & 10 Sept shows); Simon Phillips: drums; John Etheridge: rhythm guitar.
I've watched this video many times since it came out and it still gets to me. What a great version of this particular song this live performance was. I'm pretty sure it was from "The Policemans Other Ball" concert & subsequent video, which I believe was to raise funds for the families of fallen officers if my memory is correct.
"I never understood why Clapton got all the cred". as a guitarist - cream, beano album, derek and the dominoes. as a songwriter, his many original penned excellent songs. but i do agree, that as a guitar player beck is more impressive.
@jessaamur yeah, clapton has total authority and is a true badass (all the crazy drug/booze period), without ever losing his elegance. BUT he gets annihilated by Beck in this jam. But he openly admits it. Beck' just rocking out
Thanks for posting this. "Cause We Ended As Lovers" from this show is also a truly great performance by Beck. If anyone gets a chance to see it or post it, please do so. It's wonderful. Thanks.
What makes this utterly magical is the obvious joy these two titans experience throwin' twelves at each other. I just love the smile they exchange after Beck takes his first lead.
Clapton is terrific. Beck was astonishing. Clapton finesses gorgeous lines from his Strat. Beck extorts anguished poetry out of his Tele, just as he does with whatever guitar he happens to wield at any given time.
clapton is damn good but jeff beck just kicks ass

So it doesn't happen like that.

@MensaJeff
Yes, competition *does* exist. Ever heard of "headhunting"? Muddy used to do it. The question is: was this it?
Eric admits to that he used to engage in it. Its a part of some art. Get used to it.
impala327 1 year ago
@impala327 Yeah, there's competition for JOBS, moron, but you won't find those 2 guys trying to show each other up because that's childish crap.
The fuck are you talking about?
