  • Nintendo vs sega

  • First Saturn controller was the best.

  • @Woolkan

Is it the look, the feel, the size, the D-pad... What is it you like better about the first version?

  • i play tomb raider with the sega saturn controller better than the playstation controller, this sega controller fits better for me, it is so confortable, ligther, ps controller is super heavy and bulky.

  • the best controller everrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the dpad was so excellent, that microsoft stole it!

  • my favorite controller of all time.

  • @pyrenaruto If I am reading your comment correctly, Sega had their own consoles in the 80s and 90s but eventually they made bad decisions which is why they have been making games for other consoles for the past 9 years now. I agree with you in that I wish Sega would go back into making their own gaming consoles. Sega also had awesome names for their consoles. Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast!!! Too bad Nintendo sucks at naming their consoles.

  • this is my favorate controller EVER!!

  • The model 2 is much better. The model 1 is stiff and not as responsive.

  • How does this compare to the 6 button Sega Genesis pad?

  • @abanegamakgc no one likes those comments saying click on my name for a free ps3 game and it's spam and spam is BAD so please stop it every one reading

  • I needed this controller as a kid because the clicking noise the model 1 controller woke up family members late at night.

  • Great review, which spawned my review!

  • This was the one and only time we actually got the perfect D-pad. No other console could compare.

  • Best ever controller for 2D games (SNES is second best). Mad Catz returned to it for inspiration when making their SFIV gamepad, it is huge but close enough.

  • I prefer this model because of the d-pad. It's probably the best d-pad ever, which makes it really great for 2d fighting games. I imported a version with a USB plug so I can use it on my pc.

  • @KingDavid73 Can you tell me where did you buy that? I've been look for a sega saturn usb pad for ages

  • @Ze0do0Gas search for "USB SEGA Saturn SS Controller Joypad for PC PS3 mac b" on ebay. There are lots of off-brand Saturn-style usb controllers, but these actually have SEGA on them, and are much better quality than the off-brand ones. They are a little pricier though.

  • @KingDavid73 I don't trust ebay. Try and look on Google or Yahoo shop. The Japanese USB Controllers are about $20, you can probably find it for 1/2 that though.

  • @MysticTrunksHQ I'm sorry you don't trust ebay. I've bought dozens of items and have only received one in a non-working condition, and the seller refunded my money. Ebay is great, especially when trying to find game-related stuff.

  • @KingDavid73 Agreed. I've been a member for nearly 7 years, have done a couple of hundred transactions and have had maybe 1 or 2 fall through. And I got my money back anyway. :)

  • @KingDavid73 Thanks!!

  • 0:27, you mke a mistake? it goes from camera micro to computer micro

  • @rejectofsoul24 I've seen him dub in things before; you're probably right.

  • REview the sega saturn 3d controller

  • @JoostRevo i agree

  • @JoostRevo agree with this

  • Comment removed

  • 0:25 voice dub

  • Japan is from the beginning to this model.

    My best controller.

  • They really do need to start a new generation of Sega because it is the best overall.. except for those terrible sonic games that they rush out for the newer consoles.

  • LAW AND ORDER: SEGA VINTAGE UNIT

The Sega Saturn M2 controller is pretty great, though. The aesthetics are nice and the button layout is great, especially for fighting games.

  • :( My Model 2's left-bumper finally broke. I've had the controller since I got the console back in 1996, but kind of sad that is has finally failed on me. Thank god for Ebay! New one on the way!

  • I wish Sega would release a version of this for the 360/PS3, this would blow those stupid MadCatz fight pads out of the water

  • @goldenjoeblow you can get a usb saturn controller off ebay. they work on the ps3 as well! :D

  • Intense cockfight at the end

  • Can't wait for my saturn!

  • @01Zipang Same here

  • PRO :)

  • One thing I hate about my PlayStation 2 is that when I throw the controller the plastic on it is so thin and light that it chips away. I want a freaking controller that can be thrown and not even feel it.

  • @ggnome213, what?! I've thrown the controller around many times and it still works perfectly.

  • @Ollie7475 I'm talking about the case. I threw mine only 3 times and each time was to the wall at 30mph. Each one took a piece off.

  • the model 1 d-pad looks better

  • yay coleco track ball controller!

  • coleco coleco

  • The best Dpad ever made.

  • my favorite controller and the dreamcast controller

  • I think he should look for the Super Pad 8, it's friggin' fantastic. I think it's one of the only 3rd Party controllers that's better than the original controller.

  • @DisasterPiece0302 If it's anything like the Eclipse pad, then..ew.

  • @WrathOscuro I'd say similar, but not as cluttered I guess. It's got one button for turbo on the front next to the start button, and a switch on the back for slow down. All the buttons are the same size, has a great D-pad, and it has not horribly terrible triggers. It's an improvement over the Model 2 Controller, but nothing compared to the 3D Controller.

  • @DisasterPiece0302 Ah I see. The Eclipse pad looks very much like the Super Pad 8 and well..The button placement is really good. But the DPad and the Buttons themselves are both total garbage. :P

  • @WrathOscuro I've never touched the Eclipse pad, I only looked at pictures once you mentioned it. The buttons on the Super Pad 8 are really nice, and the D-Pad is good.

  • @DisasterPiece0302 Ah cool beans. In that case yeah I'd definitely like to see Mark review it before I even think about touching it. XD haha

  • @WrathOscuro Yeah, the main improvement is the triggers (they actually...work). I may donate one for review, they are only like a dollar.

  • I have to pick up one of these controllers...

  • sega saturn?....death!

  • The US Saturn controller came along because Sega of America thought the Japanese controller was too small for the jumbo sized Mongolian hands of a US Sports enthusiast. Make it Big for the boys across the pond!

  • @maxti6 The same thing sorta happened for the Xbox, anyone remember that giant of a controller? I hated that thing, the S controller fixed that but ...damn things keep breaking on me.

  • I had the MkII controller with my Saturn and always found it to be a brilliant pad that moulded perfectly to my hands... as a child. A quick revisit as an adult was shocking; ONE of my now massive spade hands dominates the poor thing - I find it nigh on impossible to play with :(

    Still, cracking pad nontheless!

  • Anyone who has a Dreamcast and loves Capcom fighters needs to get the Saturn to DC controller adapter and you can use the saturn controller on DC so you get Six buttons for your fighters and you dont have to use the horrid DC controller dpad. Also if you have the nights analog controller you can use that as your DC controller since its the same layout as DC just with more buttons. Its what Sega should have made the DC controller like!

  • @MatticusFinch1820 That... is AWESOME

  • Reminds me a lot of the "Duke" to S controller conversion for the Xbox

  • oh i get it now. Model 1 came out in America same time 2 came out in Japan. Same thing happened years later with Xbox controllers.

  • Six buttons..Seems a bit confusing honestly. I've never quite grasped the four buttons of the SNES but this has six..

Still, nice. I'll see if I can find a model 2.

  • I have both controllers for my Saturn personally I like the original better butModel 2 works better with games I haven't beat or need precision

Tomb Raider and Resident Evil practically require this controller first time through even though on both counts they play better on PlayStation

  • I got a Sega Saturn at a thrift store for $3.50 and it works great it was great. Plus i found a 64 there too for some price works good too. And heck It had a game with it yeah cool really cool

  • im getting my sega genesis soon

    WOOOH GO SEGA!!!

  • sega should really make consoles again!

  • I have this sudden urge to watch Law & Order...

    Awesome review

  • xD I want to buy a Saturn in the next three years. Awesome.

  • Someone out there, for the love of fighting games if not God PLEEEEEEASE make a controller to match (or even beat) this for the X360 and PS3........

  • I think they made Saturn/Street Fighter 3 controllers for PS2 and xbox.

  • the d-pad on the model 2 is the same as the one on the genesis/mega drive

  • When has a fighting stick EVER been of similar size to a joypad? Why is this important at all?

  • @keepingitcivil

It's a joke. Don't take it too seriously.

  • This controller is the best to play fighting games!

  • SEGA FANBOY FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!

  • I only ever had the model 2 controllers, and they were so perfect, that I would never want to try getting a model 1 controller! I got my Saturn straight after my Megadrive, where I had a couple of the 6 button pads, so the model 2 Saturn pads were perfect to continue with!

As far as Street Fighter games go, I reckon the 6 button layout on the model 2 Saturn pad is still the best gaming pad to date! It would have been nice if the current generation of consoles kept the C & Z buttons! Oh well...

  • @Cooter3422

Damn right: we need more controllers with six face buttons, I say.

  • damn ive always wanted to play a saturn. as a kid, i've never met anybody who had one though. it was either Snes, Genesis, Psx, or n64.

  • the music kinda reminds me law and order

  • You too?

  • awesome review

  • no, no one agrees with you. You're obviously a nintendo fanboy so you're opinion doesn't matter. Carry on fanboy nothing to see here.

  • Okay, after playing Street Fighter on the Saturn for a bit I do like the dpad. But come on, the shoulder buttons are verging on unworkable (that could just be my controller's condition I suppose) and the 6 button layout is hampered by the lack of a cross pad layout with an extra set of two buttons, it's more like two rows of three buttons, which works fantastically for Street Fighter but not for games that rely on pressing face buttons simultaneously. Just my opinion.

  • dude dont ba a jackwaud I mean come on he can like whatever he wantrs its his opinion god

  • So can I. So what's you points?

  • Im saying dont judge him because he likes Nintendo and yeah so can you but I mena dont judge someone because they like something diffrent

  • @ceramiclion - Hmm...doesn't sound like a fanboy. Sure his name has "Nintendo" in it but at least he's a thinking fanboy and not just those idiot fanboys who just scream their immature vocal cords off making a lot of noise but not much sense. In short, he sounds more like a FAN rather than a FANBOY.

  • yeah indeed, doesnt look like a fanboy at all. just a person who preferes nintendo pads becasue its what he is used to and he used logic and explanation for his reason. he had a preference and chose to say why, not a fanboy. everyone likes one pad over another one at some point

his opinion does matter as its different. opinions are more void and pointless if they all agree with oneother as noone has any differing ideas. the whole point of these comment boxes is to share opinions

  • @Xegethra bah, im in little rant mood. but yeah, it is just as valid to not like something as it is to like it...hence the choice of putting said opinions in comment boxes...to discuss and talk, exchange ideas, argue, say whats on your mind, not become mindless yes men without the ability to think. all opinions are valid

but still saturn pads were quite cool though, pretty comfy, i liked them

  • @ceramiclion How rude.

  • @ceramiclion and your a sega and sony fanboy and im an eggsaladsandwich

  • @Nintendomanwill Yeah, i have never owned a Saturn but i agree that the 360 D-pad is a pice of crap, I also have my Beloved PS3 and the D-pad for all my Playstations (1,2 and 3) are exalent.

  • My absolute fav controller of all time.

  • Is he going to review the 3D Saturn controller?

I liked that pad much more.

I hope he reviews it, he reviewed all the other Sega controllers...

  • Oh, u mean the one they brought out 2 play Nights. Maybe, u should ask him 2 do that.

  • mine came with no games, but two original controllers. i do now have 19 games, 10 of them are japanese, 1 american and 8 european. and there is 3 more games on its way from england and Japan!! i love Saturn :D

  • Sega saturn god pad+old xbox magic box adapter+xbox to usb adapter+Xbox 360 crossfire adapter=Using a sega saturn pad on xbox 360 for fighting game domination. it really works. thats what i use. I may put up a video for it.

  • You can get a new usb version on eBay. Sega's original works on PS3!

  • Actualy it's not a original Sega controller. It's licensed by another company and cheap produced in china.

Sega does not procude the USB controller.

  • The fact is that there are 2 pads, the official and the copy. If you buy the cheap copy , will not work on the PS3, the circuit board is the big difference.

  • Well, noit exactly, the ps3 does pic kit up, and lest you use it as far as the XMB is concerned, in games, it doesnt do anything, ssony want you to buy actual controllers, they need money.

  • how or where can I get this controller modded? I just want to do a basic mod. ADD A SILICONE COVER OR GRIPS ON SIDE AND UNDERNEATH TO PREVENT FROM SLIPAGE AND MAKE LARGER LIKE MADCATZ CONTROLLER.

  • got my sega saturn today!!! it's just fantastic!

  • It was an amazing day I got my Saturn.

  • did you get yours for 20 bucks new when they were liquidating their's out in 1996? That's how I got mine....it was definitely worth that price.

  • @kyotoair lol congrats! still waiting for mine to ship in

  • @kyotoair fantastic i got mine a month ago for 40 $

  • The 3D controller (which I pretty much use for everything {even fighting games}) deserves a review Mark!

  • Best controller i've ever played with

  • I'll get soon a new controller that looks exactly the same like this, but for PC.

I will use it to play Sega Saturn games on the PC using the SSF Sega Saturn emulator and many other uses.

  • i remember having that. but im not really sure.

  • your vice change in the beginning lol

  • looks like the prototype ark shaped PS3 controller that there was pictures of on the net. i honnestly dont know why sony scraped that shape. it was the best looking play station controller iv ever seen. but they went back to the old design exept they put trigger style L2 and R2 buttons on the back and added a new button on the center of the pad. i used to have respect for sony but since that new guy took over theve gone downhill. well thats my opininion anyway

  • Bring back Ken Kutaragi!

  • funny ending, as always, great review!

  • This for me remains the greatest controller of all time, everything about it is so perfect and it feels sooo fuckin good to use.

  • The A, B and C buttons on my contoller shift around like mad!

  • Too bad they're fragile as hell. I play fighting games and mine didn't even last a year before the d-pad got stuck in the down-right position.

It's a shame, because it was the best controller I've used prior to that.

  • The Model 2 is much better looking than the Model 1, it must be said. Looks obviously aren't the most important factor, but it makes a nice bonus.

  • Great review.. can you do one on the anolog controller? It came with Night, into dreams here en Denmark.. :) Much much better controller if you ask me, but unfortunatly, way uglier, hehe.. :)

  • 20 quid jokin 50 quid is what you pay for one you are stupid you are lookin at auction prices and ones that haven't been bid on yet. but please people try normal auctions in the real world their custom is down. proof is i got a fully working ps2 with 5 games and two controllers for 20 pounds and that is great they are much higher than that on ebay believe me.

  • I ordered this model two days ago. Really excited to use this thingy for Street Fighter 4. :D

  • i have the wireless controlers...

i have all the things for sega saturn

    sorry my bad english

  • It's not that bad

  • i just wanna say, i love u

  • it is by far the best dpad i have ever used without a doubt

  • Got a usb model two from Hong Kong. Might be a knockoff, but it still rocks!

  • Does anybody know if these Hong Kong Pads work with Vista 32bit?

  • I haven't tested it yet, but my guess is that they would. You don't need any drivers installed to start it up on XP. So as long as you have an USB slot I imagine they would work. If I get around to testing it on my Vista machine, I'll let you know.

  • That would be totally awesome!

  • Hey. This took some time, but I didn't forget. I tested my Saturn USB controller on my Vista machine. I used it on my Commodore 64 emulator, and I had no problems using it.

  • Thx for your help but i couldnt wait so long. ^^ So I risced it and ordered one and yeah it works fine, Espacially for genesis and psx emulated games. But its also great for street fighter 4 or Bionic Commando Rearmed.

  • I'll probably buy the USB version of this controller for my PC, it looks really neat. It combines the elegance and good design of the Sega Genesis controller with the versatility of having more buttons...it looks pretty much perfect.

  • the best controller ever invented! i still have this!

  • Damn lucky Japanese got the better controller to begin with, not to mention a load more games because the Saturn was a failure everywhere except Japan.

Can anyone confirm what the differences are between the model 2 and the Japanese controller?

  • no difference (only the color) jap. original is gray with blue shoulder and start buttons)

  • Many thanks. I love that no matter how obscure my query is, someone who watches these reviews knows something about it. I learn so much from YouTube ^_^

  • japanese controllers were available in different colors.

It is ironic that the MegaDrive was hugely popular in USA and Europe but weak in Japan, and the Saturn was the other way around!

  • yeah the dremcast was popular in japan to

  • Best shoulder buttons ever (non analog) they had the speed of mouse buttons. Quick comfortable and light

  • I have 4 of these controllers. 2 for my old Sega Saturn (that stopped working so many years ago), and 2 usb controllers to use for P.C. The usb controllers also work on PS3, by the way.

    P.S.

These controllers became the blueprint that all the Street Fighter pads would use ever since.

  • Theres an model 3 controller, that no one seems to now off, excpet for me... its a big round controller, real similar to the dreamcast controller... it actuals seems like its first design...

  • I have wireless

  • You have wireless what?

  • Wireless Saturn controller

  • Do you mean the infrared controllers that you have to keep pointed at the system?

  • no it just like ps3 or xbox 360

  • Really? What company is it? I want to look up information of it online. I would definitely get a pair, and I will buy another Sega Saturn.

  • just go amazon and type in wireless saturn controller and you better hurry becasue this is one left

  • Those ARE infrared controllers. Those are the ones that you have to keep pointed at the receiver. That is really old technology and is inaccurate compared to the new technology.

  • okay

    i still like it

  • Mark really, really needs to have a look at the weird controller with an analogue stick which looked like a precursor to the Dreamcast pad. I just can't see myself using a D-pad for full 3D games.

  • Best fighting pad in the world.

  • roughly 0:24 to 0:26 voice drastically changed maybe changed distance between him and the mic? lol i duno but it sounds diff!

  • this controller has an excellent design...only problem the d-pad destroys your thumb after excesive use it hurts, especially playing street fighter alpha 1 or 2, i had blisters on my thumb totally prefer the model 1 controller.

  • I got a saturn today, It's my all time favourite controller, especially the d-pad.

  • Out of all the controllers I've used, Sega Saturn's model 2 controller had always been my favorite. It was more comfortable to hold, shoulder buttons felt responsive and was perfect for Street Fighter games! Nice review! ;)

  • this controller is simply sexy. if you play sega rally enough and own lap after lap, cutting your time by millaseconds..gradually you get a boner

    from the controller!!!!

only thing that compares is the model 2 megadrive/genesis controller. both are a step up from terrible controllers

i only wish these models had analog versions. you need a nights controller for precise control for Hang-on

also very good control is on the neo geo pocket (d-pad)

  • Best digital controller on the plany!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I dunno: I think the original non-analogue PS1 controller might have been the best on the "plany".

  • ROFL @ PS D-Pad... forget it!

two words "street fighter". ; )

it hurts after a cuple minutes and u maybe gets an bubble on ur thumb...

i prefer the saturn controller (jap. original / 2nd black controller)

  • Well I have no Street Fighter experience, but I played a good bit of Soul Blade a good few years back and didn't have the "bubble on ur thumb", as you say. And whenever I play Soul Calibur 2 now I have no problem. The PS d-pad may not be the best, but it works and I see no problems with it. Maybe the Saturn model 2 pad has a better one, but until I find myself a good-priced Saturn (I look frequently) I'll never know.

  • you can get a saturn with controllers and games for like £20, how can you argue with that

  • It's more like £30, and then you need to pay postage online. I'm personally waiting until one pops up at a retro shop I know. Plus the Saturn just isn't quite my highest priority.

  • haha Darius Gaiden

    a great game indeed ^^

I also got Radiant Silvergun, always loved these kinds of games.

  • Colecovision Roller Controller apparently pwns. Makes as much sense as anything else.

  • were can you buy games for the sega saturn cos i litterely have 1 that is panzer the dragon 2

  • ebay and they are pretty cheap like i got my saturn on ebay with 2 controllers and 8 games and i bid 32 bucks lol

  • I find that the USB model's dpad is a bit sensistive, sometimes you jump in the air when trying to pull off shoryukens, also the dpad breaks off easily, mine did. I bought a used official Saturn controller, opened up the usb one and switch the board into the official controller (easy to do), keeping the usb shoulder buttons as the official one can't reach the shoulder switches on the usb board. So now I more or less have an official Sega Saturn Controller, logo and all with usb-pc/ps3 input :)

  • You can get the USB model on ebay pretty cheap (got mine for $22). Arguably the best fighter pad and compatible with PC/Mac/Playstation 3.

I use it for Street Fighter 4, it's the only gamepad I can use.

  • Is the controller USB compatible?

  • USB compatible?! You've gotta be tuggin my nuts
