All the fans would like to think that this should have, could have, would have been a hit. The truth is that....no....it wouldn't have, couldn't have but should have been. Radio was too controlled and these guys cracked it even when it was damned near impossible with the sort of music they played. I give thanks that this band didn't mind the times, as they've outlasted many groups who out sold them record wise. Rock on.
For over a year these guys played every night largely doing covers of Beatle songs. What better preparation can a band possibly do while writing songs for their first album. They were hands down the best vocal band in the history of Cleveland Rock.
You are definitely right, we took the 70's for granted. We did not realize what a cool & unforgetting era we were in. Wish I could go back to relive it again. If you did not live in the 70's you will never understand!
Eric Carmen said in an intrview that when they did " Nobody Knows" they were trying to write a song that would sound like the Beatles " No Reply" . They came pretty close ..
I had a girlfriend break up with me in 1973, I played this song over and over back then...funny thing is she is in contact with me on Facebook and she regretted breaking up with me every day since. :)
What a great suprise to find this song on You Tube! I have always liked it even though it was never released as a single. I still have the first Rasberries album with the scratch & sniff rasberry sticker. My older sister used to hang out with the members of the Choir (predecessors of the Raspberries) in Mentor Ohio.
@garageband66 Actually they were the "Mods" before being forced to change the name. They played some great concerts at Mentor Shore and the Painesville Armory.
Interesting how different opinions can be. I consider Raspberries and Badfinger two of the leading Power Pop bands and to a lesser extent, I think the much-later Gin Blossoms aren't too far from that genre. If you don't know of it, find a song here called "It's Cold Outside" from '67, by the Choir, which is everyone but Carmen. I'm just glad they all made it to 2009, unlike so many other great rock people. Especially David Smalley, who served in Vietnam.
I agree with the Badfinger & Raspberries comments. I'd like to nominate another couple of underappreciated bands from the 70's/80/s. The Shoes and Dwight Twilley Band. Both had excellent writing and musicianship.
Saw them at Santa Monica Civic in L.A. and at the Whisky. Raspberries and Badfinger are not power pop but heirs to the great bands. Big Star might be power pop but the title gets beat up at times. Harmonies and melody is where it is at. Byrds, Buffalo, etc. Hollies rule! : )
The Raspberries were just for the most part completely overlooked, especially Eric Carmen. I love the group, got to open for them once and will never forget it. They did not get the credit they deserve, fantastic band. Thanks for posting.
Nice find. I agree with the cast here in saying The Raspberries were a terribly under rated group and not enough credit. Especially if you look at the crap that gets nominated and selected to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame which amazingly is in Cleveland.
Just a sad story: a little like Badfinger not getting their fair share of deserved recognition. However, thankfully all of the Raspberries are still with us.
It was a crime that this group was never recognized as one of the greatest of all time.
Have everything Badfinger has done at some point in my life. The soundtrack from Magic Christian has eluded me but I have since heard some individual cuts from it. Pete Ham and his mates got the same death card from critics the Raspberries got "The Next Beatles". Why did every band that came after their break-up tagged with that albatross break-up, committ suicide or something? That tag is too much for anyone to live up to, it's sad.
I'd agree fully; critics and other musical groups never embraced this group. Capitol records did not do a very good job of promoting them either, big surprise there.
In concert recently, Carmen made a joke about how All By Myself was intended as a Rasp. song; It appeared to be a dig at Wally B. who seemed to get a little annoyed at it. Love Boats Against and some other ECarmen solo stuff. Wish he would do more stuff these days...
That is kind of funny seeing as Wally played on Eric's first solo album. I could see several cuts being Raspberies type tunes like:That's Rock-n-Roll, Sunrise, My Girl, and Never Gonna Fall in Love Again (really).
Does anyone know the singer of the Raspberries was eric Carmen? Interesting, I thought...In my opinion the Raspberries were way better than Carmen's solo career.
Although many might disagree, Eric was the Raspberries. Wally, Dave, Jim, Scott, Michael, and John were and still are great musicians and singers. When you hear, "Go All the Way", "Let's Pretend" and other Raspberries' songs there are many similar sounding cuts on Eric's solo work. It's all Beatles, Beach Boys, The Who, The Hollies, and other great 60's groups molded into a single band or solo artist. These guys have great taste in music!
my very favorite cut from "FRESH". or, is it "RUBBER FRESH", or "FRESH SOUL"? either way, play 'em back to back when you get a chance. both bands at their musical zenith!
Thanks for posting this great song. I wish Eric Carmen would record more music. His voice and talents are missed

I think that the this song would hold up in top 40 today as would alot of raspberries songs!

I think so too. Could you not see Paul of the Beatles doing this and some others under a title of Beatle-like songs we wished we would have recorded?

I have never heard that. That's why high-brow rock-n-roll graduates hang out at the tube.

Great stuff. One of the most heavily Beatles influenced bands of all time.

All I can say is that I feel the pain and jealousy in this song, and Carmen got to me with his words again!
I must get to bed before I have another Raspberry replay all night long in my head again.
And Bernie, whatever I did, I'm suffering.

Eric Carmen has a way of getting to folks with words and such.
I'm sure Bernie forgives you; at least I do.
