if snooker players are so much better than pool players, why don t they win all the pool champioships all the time... i mean its easy money for them, right?
@darkjedi327 actually a lot of them can. higgins and white hammered massey, and o'sullivan beat strickland to give a copule of examples, and its not like snooker players ever get battered in pool, they always put up a great fight even if they lose. but put a pool player like varner on a snooker table against a player like o'sullivan, higgins or white and he wouldn't have a chance
@aznelf13 snooker players use the same cue for most of their lives and will do anything possible to prevent changing cues... it would be like cheating on his wife if he changed cues.
lol @snarebuff. you should try playing snooker before typing all this crap about pool here. In 9 or 8ball pool its just so easy to pot them all in 1 visit on the table lol. but in snooker its different. And if you are going to argue furthermore then i see no need in explaining it to you.
@jsmh3 The TOP snooker players that enter 9 ball tournaments (always TOP snooker players and almost always 9 ball) play a decent game...enough to win against a mediocre pool player or in a short race.No side spin (maybe accidental) , position play awfull ! Have them play more complicated games like 10 ball , 8 ball , rotation etc but u don't see them there because they know better. Different games and u obviously think that pool is what YOU make of it.
@konvictz0007 Variety? Pool has all sorts of games. Rotation, one pocket, straight pool, 9 ball, 8 ball, bank pool. You can get all your variety by just racking the balls differently. Honestly, if you believe either sport is more superior than the other, you should SERIOUSLY go back to the basics.
@SnareBuff lol your theory of variety does not stand.
'You can get all your variety by just racking the balls differently.'
lol. thats like saying you can have variety in chess, just put the characters in different places.
anyway the vast majourity of people of the world will agree that snooker is the more complex game, there is more thinking behind it and deeper gameplay.
things like accuracy, cue ball controll, follow through, these are all forgiving on pool, no need for precision...
@konvictz0007 Oh really? Snooker are pool are both classifications of POCKET BILLIARDS, a thing which most people do not realize. Pool has many sub-games that are all created by changing the balls in the rack and changing the rules. In 9 ball you have a diamond of 9 balls and play them in rotation, and though you rack rotation, 8 ball, and even straight pool in the same fashion, they are all played differently. Variety? Yep, it's there.
@konvictz0007 Actually, the vast majority of people that know anything about the game will tell you the games have no means of comparison in terms of superiority. There's nothing more complex about snooker, and there's nothing more complex or deep about pool. If I wanted to be rude, I could say that snooker is nothing more than a version of straight pool.
@konvictz0007 And if you believe precision and stroke are all non-essential in any game of pool, you really should go back to the absolute basics and relearn the game. You may watch the pros play and fluke a ball or get a lucky roll, but that's in no way related to precision and stroke. And for those bashers who say "oh yeah I clear up in pool no problem but I struggle to make a 40 break in snooker" are a bunch of lying washouts who can't pocket any balls at all.
@konvictz0007 But I will say one thing, there are players out there that may play snooker and pool casually that possibly shoot all the balls in when playing 9 ball. Let me elaborate on that point: it may be considered an out if you make all the balls, but if you have to take long thin shots and are constantly out of line, you're not running the rack. It takes a wealth of knowledge and skill to play all games, but if you have any superiority questions, go listen to Steve Davis.
@konvictz0007 Specifically, listen to the match where Davis commentates on Reyes vs Chang in the 1999 WPC. He says "if any snooker player that thinks he's gonna come to this game and learn it within a couple of years really need to reassess the situation." It's never the pros that spit this bullshit, it's always the nuthugging fans.
@konvictz0007 But let me speak on the points you brought up. Accuracy: tell me that Ralf Souquet is not accurate, I DARE you. Cue ball control: you can't even begin to tell me that Efren Reyes doesn't control the cueball. If you believe that, you really know less than nothing. Follow through: tell me that Francisco Bustamante doesn't follow through, or any top player for that fact.
@konvictz0007 And one final thing, and I'll leave you to your opinions. All of the top players in the world, when they are in-stroke and playing well, make the game look easy. Grady Matthews once said "if the game doesn't look easy, you're not doing it right." You can't deny that when Blomdahl, O'Sullivan, and Reyes are in stroke, that they make 3-cushion, snooker, and pool look absolutely effortless.
@konvictz0007 You can't lump all pool games into 1 category and compare them to snooker. You show your ignorance by doing so. Snooker players transition well to 8 and 9-ball because they already have many of the skills required to play them at a high level. Not so when it comes to bank pool or 1-pocket. Educate yourself. I do play snooker in case you're wondering, as well as straight-rail billiards, 3-cushion billiards, 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball, rotation, straight pool, banks, and 1-poccket.
@mackadousha 14e1 is so much easier than snooker, you may be running 200 balls but there is little postional skill required until the last 3-4 balls in each rack, whereas in snooker position is essential in nearly every shot. a snooker match isnt just one frame, there are at least 5 and somtimes 18, so in snooker you could be running well over 500 balls in a snooker match which is much more than 200 in 14e1. on top of that the tables are bigger and pockets are smaller, so snooker is MUCH harder
You're kidding right? You don't even do bank shots in snooker. It's that lame. Who needs your crappy straight shots? We want to see some stunts, we want pool.
@Slingthatpaintboy 'bank' shots in snooker are called doubles, very good snooker players usually wont even attempt a double unless they have already won the frame due to not knowing where the object ball should finish if they miss, also the snobbery in snooker looks down on the 'double' shot as a shot that belongs to pool and not worthy of a good snooker player, in other words a double is almost classed as a fluke
im from scotland and played snooker for years also played pool but not 9 ball i now live in the US and i use my snooker cue feel so much better pool cues to heavy for me i use them to break off tho i love pool becasue i can clear teh table alot unlike snooker when i can onluy get like 40 50 breaks
snooker cues are much thinner and the tip is much narrower than a pool cue. But if you use a snooker stick on pool you want to make sure you got good aim because you can easily miscue it with a narrow tip. So just stick with pool cues for a pool game.
TEJBIR: people stop replying to these messages posted by some fuk head who used my id, hope u all stop as i m not posting em, thanks but if u still want to comment after reading this then go ahead
they played with pool tables with huge pockets back then!! holy crap in the beginning that four woulda been no where near going in in my table, crazy how times change
listen u fuking shit head ( i didnt wanna curse the fuk out of ur shit face, but u started it) : I LIKE BOTH PLAYERS, and I LOVE POOL, but i CANNOT STAND SHIT HEAD WHO KEPT ON BITCHING ABOUT POOL AND SNOOKER... so do me a favor... SHUT THE FUK UP AND GTFO of all the pool vids.
but your still a fucking idiot for saying "noone can beat you" because you played snooker for a whole THIRTY minutes ! and then think you are unbeatable. you're shit, get over it.
all i was saying was that: "if i play for 30 minutes snooker (smaller balls , smaller pockerts) , and after i play pool (larger balls and pockets) , definetly nobody can fucking stop me
listen up people for gods sake ive wached county players get the chance 2 play the top snooker players in exhibitions the county players nearly always win and well done 2 them fact is the pro players are jus playin bout 30 percent of their ability if reyes did beat ronnie and jimmy congratulations but try it in the cauldron of the crucible and see wat happens lets not be silly people snooker is the absolutttt sumit of cue sports facttttt
I hate the way Varner behaves. Not only is he constantly chewing, but when he makes the last ball he ignores O'Sullivan who stands up to shake Varner's hand.
He should really have shook Ronnie's hand right away, but given the one-sidedness (and especially the noise level) with which the audience was rooting for Team Europe, poor Nick may have been half-numb by that time. ;^)
Great shooting on either side, by the way, thanks for uploading this!
Absolutely perfectly executed combined bank and safety attempt by Varner after the break (the one he hangs up in the pocket), by the way, textbook, even though it could have cost him the game to leave it right in the jaws.
Admire Ronnie's ability to get virtually anything done without the use of side (left or right English) on the cue ball, by the way. Fascinating contrast of styles!
Perhaps not, you're right, he's a pro after all. But I know Nick (in person, not well, but well enough), my guess is, he was inattentive for some reason rather than impolite on purpose.
while we're on the subject, i saw the comment i posted a while ago, saying that the standard of snooker has improved and that i don't believe reyes would fare well in the world of snooker today got a few thumbs down. anyone who follows both games would (hopefully) agree with me, i would have thought.
What's wrong with chewing gum while at the table? Some people might do it for many different reasons, such as to help them relax or ease the tension. I don't think Varner meant to appear obnoxious.Plus no one can say the American fans were obnoxious without pointing out the British fans as well. They were just as guilty of acting out.Granted there are American players like Strickland that tarnish the integrity of the game sometimes, but what's wrong with the fans cheering on their country?
no offence to mj or hendrix nor chewing gum itself - it was just the immense discrepancy in appearance (ronnie - nick) that me bash varner for chewing with open mouth. it was not "people chewing gum (for example varner)" but rather "people chewing gum the way varner does" are to be punished. to me, this just completes my impression of him. i dont like him, you do, so what.
I never said that you claimed to be good. But if you're going to open your mouth and judge someone else's ability, maybe you should make sure you're actually good enough to do that without sounding like a jerk who doesn't know anything about what they're talking about. Commenting on someone's ability is much more legitimate if you have enough understanding of how to play to actually critique them... And we're not in first grade anymore... get over the name calling,
first of all i was commenting on the difficulty of each game compared to the other - it's inferred
Secondly, you'll see alot of pundits on t.v commenting on players' abilities even though they were never as good (some havnt even played the game at all)
thirdly, im guessing you're american as you used the word 'jerk' haha and you contradicted yourself in which only the americans can
Yeah, I am American. I wasn't calling you a name, I was telling you what you sounded like. And as far as nationality goes, there's a reason WE won the war, so get over it and quit whining about Americans.
And if you paid any attention at all, you'd see that I never defended the guys who commentate these matches. I don't like most of them either...
I don't understand why snooker being harder than pool means that Varner has no talent. Why do snooker fans always have to look down their noses?
Britain had to take the kind of bombing that you had at pearl harbour on a daily fucking basis and whilst you went around crying about it we actually showed some resolve and pulled through it
and for you to say that you won the war, the fact of the matter is the Russians did it, they took the most German casualties and by the time of d day most of the fit germans were in places like petrograd and we only had to face the invalids, so why dont you look at the facts before you go running your mouth
Umm... Revolutionary War dude. Ease up a bit... and discuss the right war. I don't remember saying anything about WWII or even mentioning anything that had to do with that war. So as far as getting facts, why don't YOU get the facts before you start running your mouth about a conversation you had nothing to do with.
I get so embarrassed by the morons in the crowd that have to chant USA at every international event. Total lack of class and style - just like Varner's vest and his gnawing on that wad of gum.
thats dumb because its the european fans who bark and howl after an american misses or after each shot a european makes...the american crowd just applauds a well pllyed shot until they won then they let the europeans have it for all the howling they had to endure through out the match USA!!!
snooker is a great cue game but not the greatest...3 cushion is harder in my book...and stephen hendry is better than osullivan...dont get mad though...
everyone here seems soooo angry. What's up with that? If you know that your game and your player are the best then there can't be much anger. Anger means fear and fear comes from uncertainty. So come on. You love snooker and o'sullivan. That's cool and no need to be angry. I personally think that snooker is probably the toughest cuesport to master. It's a fabulous game!
so what if he did , no pro would argue ronnie is the most gifted snooker player to play the game. Left handed right handed one handed lol he is pure incredible.
"ronnie o'sullivan well the most talented and gifted player to pick up a cue" The words of alex higgins not me -"RONNIE? well no player is as talented as him" the words of stephen hendry" "If ronnie 0sullivan was more mentaly up for it ambitious he could win another 5 world titles" the word of steve davis , name 1 player that was or is better than him???
ronnie os sullivan , well im luckier enough to have met the man and watched him play, one word descirbes his play , amazing!!! no other player ever or now as good as him. FACT
stephen hendry is not and was not better than o sullivan. he was just lucky with what era it was. No higgins or williams in their prime. O Hendry didnt win a major at 33, ronnie has. Ronnie plays both handed, his century and 50+ averages are better and he has more 147's. he also plays the game much faster. I think this video demonstrates the difference in skill level between pool and snooker. How the hell can you expect to get a fair score with a first to 3! pathetic!
Efren beat Ronnie and White in the same day. Efren DOES NOT play snooker as good as them. He just happened to play very good snooker that day and beat them. Daryl Peach is the one who witnessed it. Ask Ronnie or Jimmy about it. They have great Respect for Efren.
And let me add, the cue sport that is the most difficult and requires the most ability is 3-cushion billiards. That game makes snooker look as easy as American bar pool.
I know Sullivan isnt that impressed with Efren, I remember when Sullivan played the IP championship in USA a couple of years ago when he said well hes the best I have heard but I havent seen anything special about his play that I couldnt do.
3 cushions? the most difficult and requires ability? sir, do you play any of theses games?Theres is no way to compare pool and snooker, that are games of precision demanding concentration on endless situations, with the game of three cushions that is a game of approximation playing zones on similar situations,so much, that three cushion game has more than five well known systems! please
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Oh, and here's the interview with Daryl Peach:
Who, in your opinion, was the greatest ever to pick up a cue (snooker, pool, whatever)?
Snooker: Ronnie O'Sullivan
Pool: Efren Reyes
Overall: Efren because I saw him play Jimmy White and Ronnie O'Sullivan 6 years ago, at snooker best of 5 for £100 each if I remember rightly: he beat both of them with his pool cue, and he made 3 centuries!! Now that's special.
Maybe he was turned off to the sport by the bitter attitude that most snooker players seem to have regarding the other cue sports. If the derogatory comments made by the Brits and other snooker players that smear EVERY pocket billiards video on YouTube are any indication, it would seem that snooker players consider their sport to be the end all be all of pocket billiards, and turn their nose up to all the other cue sports. Why would any TRUE player want to be part of that?
haha...not in a million yrs efren can beat ronnie in snooker..lol...jus go see ronnie's videos, he's an absolute genius. if efren's dat gd, y din he play snooker proffesionally, there's much more money in snooker den in pool.
efren has beaten ronnie in snooker, but behind closed doors, and a while ago. i dont believe efren could beat ronnie, or even a play of the standard of, say, peter ebdon, at snnoker now. the standard of snooker has improved a lot. i would love to see ronnie and efren lock horns in a game of snooker again
would also like to see ronnie play efren at 9 ball. im sure its happened before, so does anyone know the score, when/if efren and ronnie played each other at 9 ball?
Reyes did play snooker against Ronnie O', and beat him. He also beat White at snooker on the same day. He ran 4 consecutive centuries. People don't know that Reyes is one of the best snooker players on earth(it's very popular in the Philippines). If you don't believe me, bet against him and watch your money disappear; in ALL games. Remember, this is a guy who can hold his own against Blomdahl at 3 Cushion.
As good as Efren plays 3-cushion, to say that he can "hold his own" against Blomdahl might be overstating Efren's skills a bit. Perhaps you could say that Blomdahl can "hold his own" in 9-ball or snooker.
snooker is very hard to play but pool is not so hard, though u have to know all the cue effects and stuff but in snooker the table is bigger, balls smaller and many. + snooker requires more patience
Look at the size of the pockets - bloody massive. My nan could play pool with her eyes closed. I still find it a very fun game but much prefer snooker.
i like both snooker and pool but just admit mate snooker requires much more skill cause firstly there are smaller pockets secondly more balls and thirdly its played by decent players unlike that strickland and Varner
9ballpool dot see oh dot you kay. click on interviews then click on daryl peach. Read question number 7. See what a snooker player says about Efren Reyes beating O'Sullivan and White at snooker with a pool cue! Efren is amazing. He can play 8 or 9 ball, 3 cushion, one pocket and he even has a gold medal in Snooker. The best all around player ever.
I played snooker in europe and now I play 9ball in the US. There is no way we can compare this 2 games, snooker is for genius like ronnie and 9ball is just a funny game where everybody can win.
Yanks call this Skillful, what rubbish! I could beat these lot ( Americans that is )...

snooker cues are much thinner and the tip is much narrower than a pool cue. But if you use a snooker stick on pool you want to make sure you got good aim because you can easily miscue it with a narrow tip. So just stick with pool cues for a pool game.

I understand what you are saying. I like warming up on a snooker table for an hour or so.
It helps me sharpen my focus, smooth out my stroke, and it also helps with my touch.
For those of you that have never tried it, it's like warming up on a tight 9-foot table, then playing on a bar box - you feel like you can't miss.
While I don't claim to be the best, I am a decent player who will use any technique to better my game.

Thanks -
I've recently started warming up by playing straight pool on a snooker table using 2.25 inch balls.
After 3 or 4 racks, I feel really calm and focused.
Once I start hitting break shots with confidence, I'm ready to go play on the 9-foot tables.

I hate the way Varner behaves. Not only is he constantly chewing, but when he makes the last ball he ignores O'Sullivan who stands up to shake Varner's hand.
MartinRmoutil 2 years ago 2
He should really have shook Ronnie's hand right away, but given the one-sidedness (and especially the noise level) with which the audience was rooting for Team Europe, poor Nick may have been half-numb by that time. ;^)
Great shooting on either side, by the way, thanks for uploading this!
LeonFleisherFan 2 years ago
Absolutely perfectly executed combined bank and safety attempt by Varner after the break (the one he hangs up in the pocket), by the way, textbook, even though it could have cost him the game to leave it right in the jaws.
Admire Ronnie's ability to get virtually anything done without the use of side (left or right English) on the cue ball, by the way. Fascinating contrast of styles!
LeonFleisherFan 2 years ago
Thats bull - there is no excuse for being that ignorant!
jmcdo85 2 years ago
Perhaps not, you're right, he's a pro after all. But I know Nick (in person, not well, but well enough), my guess is, he was inattentive for some reason rather than impolite on purpose.
LeonFleisherFan 2 years ago
while we're on the subject, i saw the comment i posted a while ago, saying that the standard of snooker has improved and that i don't believe reyes would fare well in the world of snooker today got a few thumbs down. anyone who follows both games would (hopefully) agree with me, i would have thought.

insulanerhaeuptling 3 years ago
What's wrong with chewing gum while at the table? Some people might do it for many different reasons, such as to help them relax or ease the tension. I don't think Varner meant to appear obnoxious.Plus no one can say the American fans were obnoxious without pointing out the British fans as well. They were just as guilty of acting out.Granted there are American players like Strickland that tarnish the integrity of the game sometimes, but what's wrong with the fans cheering on their country?

lemonite1 3 years ago
no offence to mj or hendrix nor chewing gum itself - it was just the immense discrepancy in appearance (ronnie - nick) that me bash varner for chewing with open mouth. it was not "people chewing gum (for example varner)" but rather "people chewing gum the way varner does" are to be punished. to me, this just completes my impression of him. i dont like him, you do, so what.

I'd love to see you play either of them at anything and last 10 seconds...
tifferdile1 3 years ago
at what point in my statement did i say anything about how good i am at snooker or pool?
you idiot
garyfosbin18 3 years ago
I never said that you claimed to be good. But if you're going to open your mouth and judge someone else's ability, maybe you should make sure you're actually good enough to do that without sounding like a jerk who doesn't know anything about what they're talking about. Commenting on someone's ability is much more legitimate if you have enough understanding of how to play to actually critique them... And we're not in first grade anymore... get over the name calling,
tifferdile1 3 years ago
first of all i was commenting on the difficulty of each game compared to the other - it's inferred
Secondly, you'll see alot of pundits on t.v commenting on players' abilities even though they were never as good (some havnt even played the game at all)
thirdly, im guessing you're american as you used the word 'jerk' haha and you contradicted yourself in which only the americans can
garyfosbin18 3 years ago
Yeah, I am American. I wasn't calling you a name, I was telling you what you sounded like. And as far as nationality goes, there's a reason WE won the war, so get over it and quit whining about Americans.
And if you paid any attention at all, you'd see that I never defended the guys who commentate these matches. I don't like most of them either...
I don't understand why snooker being harder than pool means that Varner has no talent. Why do snooker fans always have to look down their noses?
tifferdile1 3 years ago 2
'we won the war'? - dont remember that coming into it but either way Amercia is a much bigger nation - you should win wars.
ok fair comment about the commentators
And i dont think i ever said Varner has no talent. im not a snooker fan by the way
garyfosbin18 3 years ago
Britain had to take the kind of bombing that you had at pearl harbour on a daily fucking basis and whilst you went around crying about it we actually showed some resolve and pulled through it
and for you to say that you won the war, the fact of the matter is the Russians did it, they took the most German casualties and by the time of d day most of the fit germans were in places like petrograd and we only had to face the invalids, so why dont you look at the facts before you go running your mouth
hay0506 2 years ago

Total lack of class and style - just like Varner's vest and his gnawing on that wad of gum.

garyfosbin18 3 years ago
thats dumb because its the european fans who bark and howl after an american misses or after each shot a european makes...the american crowd just applauds a well pllyed shot until they won then they let the europeans have it for all the howling they had to endure through out the match USA!!!

stephen hendry is not and was not better than o sullivan. he was just lucky with what era it was. No higgins or williams in their prime. O Hendry didnt win a major at 33, ronnie has. Ronnie plays both handed, his century and 50+ averages are better and he has more 147's. he also plays the game much faster. I think this video demonstrates the difference in skill level between pool and snooker. How the hell can you expect to get a fair score with a first to 3! pathetic!

Please Efren has never beaten Sullivan in snooker I dont think he ever played him in snooker.
While Sullivan can play with the top pool players a top pool player can never have a chance in snooker.
wmadoss 3 years ago
Efren beat Ronnie and White in the same day. Efren DOES NOT play snooker as good as them. He just happened to play very good snooker that day and beat them. Daryl Peach is the one who witnessed it. Ask Ronnie or Jimmy about it. They have great Respect for Efren.
And let me add, the cue sport that is the most difficult and requires the most ability is 3-cushion billiards. That game makes snooker look as easy as American bar pool.
COGsoldier17 3 years ago 4
Yes I agree 3-cushion billiards (carambole) probalby is the hardest but it is a completeley different game.
A carambole player wouldnt stand a chance in snooker either and a snooker player could stand a chance in a carambole game.
A snooker player would be far better than the best pool player though.
About this Efren beating Sullivan, I would like some evidence for this since I havent read or heard anything about this. And read alot about snooker.
wmadoss 3 years ago
I know Sullivan isnt that impressed with Efren, I remember when Sullivan played the IP championship in USA a couple of years ago when he said well hes the best I have heard but I havent seen anything special about his play that I couldnt do.
wmadoss 3 years ago
3 cushions? the most difficult and requires ability? sir, do you play any of theses games?Theres is no way to compare pool and snooker, that are games of precision demanding concentration on endless situations, with the game of three cushions that is a game of approximation playing zones on similar situations,so much, that three cushion game has more than five well known systems! please

If efren is really that good in snooker, y din he play snooker proffesional, he would be making much much more money in snooker than in pool.
kbteo147 3 years ago
Maybe he was turned off to the sport by the bitter attitude that most snooker players seem to have regarding the other cue sports. If the derogatory comments made by the Brits and other snooker players that smear EVERY pocket billiards video on YouTube are any indication, it would seem that snooker players consider their sport to be the end all be all of pocket billiards, and turn their nose up to all the other cue sports. Why would any TRUE player want to be part of that?

efren has beaten ronnie in snooker, but behind closed doors, and a while ago. i dont believe efren could beat ronnie, or even a play of the standard of, say, peter ebdon, at snnoker now. the standard of snooker has improved a lot. i would love to see ronnie and efren lock horns in a game of snooker again

Remember, this is a guy who can hold his own against Blomdahl at 3 Cushion.
lemonite1 3 years ago
As good as Efren plays 3-cushion, to say that he can "hold his own" against Blomdahl might be overstating Efren's skills a bit. Perhaps you could say that Blomdahl can "hold his own" in 9-ball or snooker.
