  • Too high pitched. Not even in the key of E.

  • 0:35 WHAT THE BUCK!!!! LOL

  • @mjvirgino00 OMG! I thought that I'm the only one who thinks that!!!Hahaha It's Matt Oltman. He is such a sweetheart in real life! He is our choir director at UC Berkeley this year!

  • What an interesting version of this piece!

  • MARIO! STOP SINGING MARIO! WE HAVE TO SAVE THE PRINCESS!!!

  • Heard chantecleer preform at the St. Patricks Cathedral in San Francisco, have they're autographs. I love them. It was gorgeous

  • Faster than I like it, but still enjoyable. It's Christmas time in July.

  • This song is by far the most powerful hymn.

  • @PeaceLoveToYou are you mentally retarded? Or just musically ignorant?

  • @PeaceLoveToYou no, they're just a men's choir. don't be a douchebag.

  • I love mustache guy. His mustache is so awesome.

    also, chanticleer is fracking amazing.

  • Dude, im a soprano, and I am pretty sure that these men can sing higher than me! amazing!

  • woow there singing accualy summond 500 other videos with the same song and OUTCLASSED THEM!

  • this is a general comment. the video is awesome and this is nothing to do with that. but I read a comment saying "too fast" and that is really annoying. If that person wants to lead a group singing the same song, then they can take w/e tempo they want. Thats what makes an individual performance unique.

  • i luv dis group

  • @PeaceLoveToYou Labeling- isn't that discrimination?

  • @PeaceLoveToYou no, it's not discrimination. they are a private choral group, not a public organization.

  • too fast !!!!

  • @rabbanif you tell that to them

  • This is a really nice tastefull version!

You can hear a lovely traditional fife and drum rendition of this great English carol on my page!

  • omg the person with the soprano voice can freakin sing!!!

  • amazingly american. quite good though

  • Lol

  • Lol wat up with the mustache!? Hahaha

  • @uofallpeople1 that's what I immediately noticed too!

  • mustache!!

  • The men sound pretty good. Not sure about the ladies though... too shrill.

  • @jeremydean they are all guys....all of em..

  • Eric's mustache is LEGEND... (wait for it.)...

  • Good, but Missing some decent bass singers

  • @SamFischer1000 Dude, it's just a treble heavy arrangement. Eric Alatorre is one of the best basses I've ever heard.

  • @SamFischer1000 You're insane. The blend in this instance is perfect, and Eric Alatorre is one of the best bass singers known in the world. He's been their double bass for I believe seventeen years.

  • @SamFischer1000 You're insane. The blend is incredible. Eric Alatorre is one of the best bass singers in the world and has been their double bass for I think seventeen years. Rebalance your speakers. The bass is not the main focus of this song, but it is definitely there.

  • @Icyveins906 Posting almost the same thing twice is unnecessary. What I wanted to express is the opinion that this arrangement lacks bass, independent of the ability of the individual singers. The entire thing just sounds a bit thin.

  • FALSETTO!

  • Awesome

  • Good Lord ! Did they just jumped out from a Victorian era painting ? Gentlemen indeed !

  • EPIC MUSTACHE

  • That was awesome although I now feel a bit nerdier having watched it. Barbershop mustache rocked it... Lol

  • Absolutely incredible!!!!

  • we're singing the opening for them in charlotte tomorrow

  • I know the Producer of Chanticleer Steve Barnett. His Wife Jeanie Brindley-Barnett was my vioce teacher at MacPhail Centre for Music.

  • "Chanticleer" <-- "chante clair" (french) = "clear singing".

  • wish i could sing like that.

  • Chanticleer came to Ohio Wesleyan last year. They were FANTASTIC! We loved them so much, that we got them to do encore! lol!

  • i met some of the guys in this group and sang with them (Along with 400 students ) at the davies symphony hall in SF when i was in highschool.

that said, the guys in this group are amazing and yeah the only corrections they would heed are those from other members, or from people who speak a language natively that they are learning pronunciation for. they aren't perfect but close to it. i wouldnt be surprised if they were sight reading

anyone who has sung in a choir can appreciate these guys

  • @jeffrey8475 I was in the Chanticleer National Youth Choral Festival as well!

  • @vienneseplaya and @jeffrey8475 - I was at the National Youth Choral Festival too! That was the highlight of my senior year of high school. I learned so much and had a lot of fun in the process.

Did you know that Chanticleer put the full recording of our performance at Davies Symphony Hall on their website? It's only $10 and you can download the whole thing right away. Just Google Chanticleer and you can find their website. The album is called The Singing Life.

  • @PrincessAnya91 Oh yeah, I saw that on their site. I absolutely can't wait for the next festival! Too bad they're only every two years...Such a great experience to work with artists of such caliber.

  • Super :-)

  • Who would dislike this????

  • Just saw Chanticleer at Pepperdine's Ascending Voice II. They were awe-some!!!!

  • Final high note is amazing!

  • They are performing at Bowling Green State University tonight!

  • Very nice arrangement. I grow tired of hearing the same old versions over and over, so this was a nice change of pace.

  • I have seen Chanticleer perform in Cincinnati, Ohio as well as Springfield, Ohio. They are fantastic!!

  • no u cant, not if it makes the song ugly, oh and btw dont start arguing, i dont have time.

  • I love it!! You guys are just amazing. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us.

  • @MOREEENITA You can change a song's tempo to whatever you want.

  • I love this!!

  • Hello ppl this song is very hard to sing & I think they did an excellent job....well rehearshed as well

  • OMG. back row mustache. Epic.

  • @saxappeal90 EPIC stache indeed. :-)

  • 0:52 Just listen to the basses there.. talk about instant boner

  • cute.

  • is it just bass and tenor voices?

  • they have 12 voices 3 to a part. soprano, alto, tenor, and basses

  • Slow it down slightly, but keep that power and that driving quality in the tempo.

Oh, and PUT THE TENORS IN THE BACKGROUND. GIVE THE BASSES AT LEAST A VERSE. COME ON. Goddamn tenors, always stealing the spotlight from the basses...

  • awesome! i love this variation very much. Merry Christmas and shalom!

  • Do these guys have any funny goofy videos?

    Something like barbershop choir goofiness?

  • ok so ileft a comment forever ago about how awesome that guy's mustache is... then i mentioned it to my friend and it turns out that he is her dad's friend. awkward.

  • amazing job. not too many guys can boast a voice like that!

  • sung just that too much fast

    slow it down dudes slightly

  • I agree entirely! The end it a bit like a train whistle, but that doesn't mean it has to tear through the concert hall so fast that the words become meaningless. Otherwise, great!

  • i like how you say that as if they're going to listen to you. These guys are professional. The probably don't take singing notes from youtube.

  • @jcirmsa I went to an exclusive chanticleer concert last night and all but two of the current group members didn't have a Masters degree in vocal performance (two of them graduated from Yale)! These men are seriously talented as well as professional :D

  • @jcirmsa hahaha this is best comment I have ever read on youtube. ha, im sorry that was really random, but had to tell you.

  • @jewhitacre Thanks! haha:)

  • How can there be "too many" harmonies? There can be only one harmony anyway... the person who wrote that has no clue about music...

  • Maybe there is too many harmonies, But it sounds good still!

  • there can be more than one harmonie do know anyhting about music

  • Of course I do, I'm a composer.

But you obviously don't know what "harmony" is in music.

  • a harmony is the combination of two or more notes, you are obviously not a composer because 3rds and fifths are very common harmonies and when all three are together you get a chord wow, i hate people who lie to try and prove a false point

  • I'm not lying, check my channel.

And a combination of two or more notes is not "harmony", that's a chord. Harmony is the USE of chords, their connection, progression and the way you build them up.

Now that the people saying "too many harmonies" meant was probably the arrangement is too "complicated", and they'd prefer a more traditional and more simple version.

The "too many harmonies" comment reminds me of the Emperor's comment in the movie "Amadeus" - "The music is nice, but too many notes".

  • Ah, they're truly amazing =)

  • FRANCIS!

  • I saw them in concert in Akron, Ohio.

They had a standing ovation and EVERYTHING.!

    They were AMAZING.

  • i loved it!

  • the high voice is contra tenor.

  • Wow,I've been reading comments here since i've posted my own. They are not singing a lifestyle. That is no one's business but their own. I know through the years some are straight some are gay, as in real life. be careful whom you judge- it may be someone you love, but they can't reveal themselves to judgemental You!

  • Yeah, I met them all at a choral fest in Akron, Ohio, a little over a week ago. Yes, some of them are gay, some are staright, but honestly, who cares, they are amazing singers, and musicians, and that's all that really matters.

  • They are the best. I've seen them at Ravinia and own many of their cds. No one can sing better!

  • 1:38...... EPIC!!!!!!!!!!

  • 0:34

    Mustache :)

  • The technique is supreme, but I'd like to hear this song again in about Allegro rather than presto...

  • Absolutely superb!

  • If you think this is too many harmonies, don't ever listen to "Spem in alium."

  • What? This is not too many harmonies. I love it =)

  • I agree - and love it too. I didn't mean there are too many harmonies in this. I was responding to someone who did think there are too many harmonies. I simply said that if s/he thought this was too many not to listen to "Spem in alium." I agree with you - and I also enjoy "Spem in alium."

  • Yeah =) oh, yeah, I knew what you meant, I was hoping my comment wouldn't be misinterpreted, lol, but I guess it was. Sorry. But yes, they are great.

  • The sopranos are AMAZING on the last verse!!! HAHAHA =)

  • Countertenors.

  • those are male sopranos, friend

  • Sure - sopranists. You're drawing a distinction not everyone makes.

  • Conversely, I could be underdrawing a distinction others would be more sure to make.

  • The correct musical term is countertenor. Sorry, there is no such thing as a male soprano.

  • right syrinx, in choir we're taught to look happy and upbeat. there's nothing more boring than a bored choir. doesn't mean they're gay

  • Chanticleer is not specifically a gay ensemble. It never has been. Ok, so various incarnations of the group have more gay members than others have... But to pigeonhole them and say it's just a gay choir is wrong.. I think they're an easy target because they're based in San Francisco.. Is every arts ensemble out there that has gay members going to be considered a gay group? Why can't they simply be judged by the quality of music they present?

  • Exactly, some are gay, some are straight, but their music is all that should matter.

  • AWSOME!!!!!

  • The final high note is BADASS.

  • Wow Eric Alatorre is a true Basso Profondo. His dark, rich, deep, and bottomless basso voice surely does hold it's own by against the group. No wonder why they only have two contra-basses. Anymore would cause severe earthquakes! Haha.

  • I love these guys! I went to high school with one of the counter-tenors. Hi Adam!! =)

  • I've seen Chanticleer in concert and this video doesn't make them sound very good at all. Maybe because the stage is not acoustically designed? Anywho, their harmony is perfect it just sounds bad here. And they only have a couple deep bass singers, most are mid-range or tenor giving a higher note feel, I think.

  • I shall take your word for it...some say that they are better than the Kings singers, obviously I may be biased being a stalwart Kings fan, but this really does not come close.

  • Oh well Yeah, Kings are AWESOME! Chanticleer does more umm word singing than experimenting with musical insrument sounds that the Kings do, if that makes any sense. You know how the Kings do the "bum bum bum" bass lines and have a harmony like acapella groups imitating instruments while Chanticleer is mostly choral

  • ha i heard of chantiqueer...

  • yeah when's the last time you traveled the world, released multiple cd's and came out on national t.v and got paid for doing it? ignorance....

  • i haven't but my dad has... i'm totally serious

    shut up

  • so your dad's success gives you grounds to criticize other people's success by the talent that they have hmm I guess..whatever gets you through the day...

  • then what was the point of saying when was the last time you traveled the world... whatever else it was... if it doesn't matter anyways

i only disagree with their lifestyle. i think their music is second only to The King's Singers

  • not sure if i really like the harmony here. :S anyone think the same?

    Great vid.

  • Hehe, our chorus class got to see them today at shanadoah university.

  • 0:34. i love his mustache. no joke.

  • WOWW that's so wack

  • ya and so i started telling my friend about his mustache and she starts talking about how that is her dad's friend...its a small world.

  • ooh i bet that didn't go over so well

  • How is their "lifestyle", whatever that refers to, relevant? They are an amazing performing ensemble and any choir, of any age group, is lucky to do a workshop with them. They really are a great group of guys, and even people from San Francisco can be decent human beings.

  • You are a prime example of an ignorant American. You must stop judging others!

  • highschoolers are not young kids and if you think that none of them know what a gay person is then you are a naive idiot.

  • What lifestyle? Singers?

  • Wow...that's all I have to say.

Lifestyle?? I'm pretty sure that these men aren't professing their "lifestyle" in their songs...people really need to get a lot smarter.

  • Sounds like you're a proud practitioner of discrimination against the LGBT community, or perhaps merely homophobic, who knows. They're great musicians, and that's all that matters.

  • pssssh beyonce has nothing on chanticleer

  • I got to see them preform at my school! My town's high school choir got to do a workshop with them! They were so cool and really funny!

  • I loved hearing this group in Jacksonville, FL

this weekend. Thank you Beaches Fine Arts Guild for bringing this talented group to our city.

  • Whom is this arrangement?? This is wonderful! Chanticleer is the best ensemble!!!
