Now THAT's how it's supposed to look. Swings and slashes were practically useless against heavy armour so they had to come up with a much more sophisticated way of fighting. Who says only the Asians could perform martial arts?

if its a staged fight, then there is no need to use real armor, because it only shows how men in armor WOULD fight, their armor really just sets the tone.

Training with the protections helps becouse they can strike fast and hard without having to worry about hurting their training partners. Without the protections, the demostration would have to be done slowly.

Excellent job, well presented and executed. The very practical and realistic abandonment of various weapons after the point is passed is something of a shock, but seems very correct. Ignore the full plate elitists. I've seen plenty of extremely well-equipped fat men who bang weapons together like children while wearing the most exquisite armor. What matters is your scholarship and your intensity in training. Keep up the good work. Good luck.

dissapointed that you don't use the right armour, or even a proper sword. Since it's staged there is absolutely no need to adjust the weapons. I know armour can be expensive, but nothing will replicate it at all. get the real stuff, or don't do it, to be honest, the weight, the flexibility, the vision, it's all different in this kit.

Not so fast! Wearing plastic armour doesn't have to simulate wearing plate armour, it it could be worn for protection. The fighters could to be representing unarmoured warriors. A dagger was sticking out of the chest of one of the fellows, something that wouldn't happen if they were wearing plate. .

and yes, some stuff wouldn't work that way in real armour. armour isn't That expensive, and nothing will tell you how it feels to wear it and fight or ride in it other than the real deal.

Airnt, you are so right! Especially with armoured combat there is absolutly no point in using modern protective wear... Harnischfechten is fighting in harness. You can't train it as an alternative matrial art, because it deals with a situation which is completely historic. You simply won't happen to be sentenced to fight an ordeal in full armour ( as in the video a judical duel is shown ). It is only working under the circumstances of its time, to which belongs historic armour, no plastic shit.

Ansonsten habt ihr ein schönes Video gedreht, aber leider werden eure Mühen durch die (zumindest aus meiner Sicht) mangelhafte rüstung zunichte gemacht. Ich meine, ihr könntet euch für nur ein paar euro mehr als ihr für die plastikpanzerung ausgeben habt Rüstungen zulegen, die für eure Zwecke ausreichen. Wenn ihr euch ernsthaft mit harnischfechten auseinandersetzen wollt, führt da mal echt kein Weg dran vorbei, denn ohne Harnisch macht ihr nunmal kein Harnischfechten. Ansonsten schönes Video...

wirklich sehr schön, möchte nur wissen warum ihr mit dem schwert am schluss kämpft, so wie man in einem engen gang konfrontiert wird ( 2te hand an der klinge), und nicht richtige schläge setzt, ihr habt doch ausreichend platz, aber an sich wirklich seeeeeeehr schön^^

Once the effective range of a spear is closed in upon, it is useless. Same with long sword - If there's no distance to cut or strike, it's more effective to close in grapple and finish him with a dagger.

However there are some long sword techniques that gets around that.

Defintely, halfswording reduces the longsword's range to, well half really. Also pommel and cross strike are effective at very close range.

But yes, once grappling commences it is often best to have a rondel (dagger).

you see, this is what i mean: in real harness it would have been clear why there is no point in the weapon once the point is passed. pommel strikes, for example, to a helmet, even a sallet do naught! To grapple is the most effective and logical.

the plastic confuses this point.

the techniques are descibed in these ways in many manuscripts, show the youtube community why.

no it's just nonsensical to spend money on protective gear from football etc. where you could just as well get actual armour for a compareable sum.

armoured like this or something lighter, you are best equipped for half-contact practice of historic fencing (with a federschwert for even more safety).

armoured fencing goes for thrusts to the unarmoured spots and these are deadly today as they have always been. there is no save method of practice here but only coreographed half-contact drills.

mordhau, i would damage my expensive helmet and be angry. i don't think it would hurt more than a lance to the face, whilst jousting which I've had numerous times.

all stupid stuff aside...

My first armour was 1345 pounds to buy. It was by no means perfect but gave decent ideas about how it works. The $35000 one i have now is much better, but of course not everyone wants to go that far.

I don't think 1345 quid is much to pay, if one is serious about doing this.

I like how you guys fought holding both spear and bastard sword. Fighting spear in long range and then sword and finaly dagger in close range. I might use that at some future point in SCA melees.
