If you look at his world record video, he says the trick is to get distracted by something else so cubing is not the first priority. So I suppose he is trying to get distracted by thinking of something.

The clock should start the moment he examines the cube.

My point is that the inspection time should be part of the total time. One person can use all of the 15 seconds to inspect, but another person takes 8 seconds. The basis for comparison is distorted when the inspection time is not counted. Some competitions I've seen clock at the time when the cube is picked up.

The sun glasses and music are his way of keeping his cool and relaxing during the finals. I think he uses the sunglasses so he cannot see the crowd watching him. He needs to create a calm and familiar environment in the conditions he probably usually practices in. Competitions in general are known for being extremely nerve racking!

your not allowed to wear glasses unless you have a perscription; and these aren't very nerve racking after the 1st or 2nd competitions.
