@peterequation Yeah, it was a little screwy. They originally offered me no scholarship, so I deferred enrollment, moved, got a job, made other plans for my life. Then a month before classes they called and offered me a half tuition scholarship because too many recipients had declined enrollment. But I was no longer in a position to accept. Really happy with SDSU now though, plus I'll end up with a Master's degree out of it.
@peterequation I had just moved to San Diego, and SDSU's a lot cheaper than LAMA, so started looking into it. See jazz.sdsu.edu. I did my undergrad in computer science, so I'm in the grad program here, no need for GEs. There's a ton of talent between the students and profs here, and I highly recommend it if you're into jazz. I've heard complaints from the vocal students though, as there's no real private vocal instructor available through school.
@josephfwalker hm..great advise man, even tho im more into rock and R&B... one more question, what do u think about lama's vocal department? cuz i searched lama scholarship audition on youtube and there are no videos for vocal
@peterequation Sorry, I have no idea what LAMA's vocal department is like. I'd ask the school if they can put you in touch with some alumni and ask their opinions.
i'm not gonna lie.....I clicked this because I thought you were that Joe Walker from AVPM....but you are really good. I'm glad i found this. seriously amazing
Bravo, great job! I'm sure you'll have your choice of schools/careers with that talent and the passion you so clearly demonstrate.
I totally rocked out with my Strat before I had the kids. Now I'm admiring your talent AND wondering if you need someone to do your laundry for you (in the background XD). Sorry, can't help but 'mom' people!
Anyhow, this has inspired me to dig the guitar out and play. (I hope I can still riff some of the old standards.) Thanks! :)
I'm pretty sure I have the same guitar as you. American Fender Stratocaster, midnight wine colour? Although mine's a lefty :) And it has the custom '54 strat pickups. I like that clean sound, haha.
LAMA competes directly with Musicians Institute in Hollywood, and less directly with Berklee in Boston, so consider those. I'm into jazz, and I wanted to stay in SoCal, so I also looked at CSU Northridge, USC, and SDSU. Private lessons are a big help too. Seek out the best instructors in your area, take at least a few lessons, even if it's expensive. You can get a lot of career guidance that way.
Not kidding, Joe, I could just sit here and listen to you play the guitar all day. You play wonderfully! Thanks for this. =) Good luck with whatever you're doing right now! I hope it all works out for you.
I was accepted and offered a half-ride scholarship, but decided not to go. I'm now working, studying, taking lessons, and teaching lessons in San Diego, and trying to get into the SDSU jazz program.
This is not AVPM Joe Walker, though they do look ridiculously alike. He's still amazingly talented though :D

Screw that, I'm glad I came across your video because you're AMAZING. you seem entirely at ease with a guitar, I love it.
Thanks a bunch, and keep doing what you're doing :)
