I once read that a music critic had remarked her voice was, for a purely acoustical perspective, an ugly sound. I didn't really understand what that meant at the time, I thought it was just silly. But lately I've been thinking it makes sense. Her timbre is indeed almost ugly, rather monstrous and horrible - as are all operas. But it's so tragic, violent and exuberant. So lately I have heard other sopranos with "ugly" voices, and I adore them!

Who cares about the voice ... Callas is so much more than just a "voice" ... Callas is a Myth, a Legend, and will remain the symbol of what should be an Opera singer until the end of time. Even here, with her voice "ruined", she remains sovereign, and so much better than many so called "opera stars" of today.
WoW. Watching this woman sing is a masterclass. Yes her voice may have lost a touch at the top end but even on a bad day Callas could outsing most good performers. Its taken years for people to really appreciate just how good she was.

@blktenor...lack of diaphragm strength may cause wobbles...as you age...esp. you must have a strong physical core. i hear it in many jazz and rock vocalists on quick recordings. it also has a little help from where you place your incoming notes before the wobble. i hear it a lot and others never mention it on recordings...this is most likely why pop singers cannot sing an entire line in one breath or even think of singing 2 or 3 lines in one breath.

I don't know much about opera but I would like to know about what took her voice away, I mean why isn't this great compared to her earlier sound? I have no idea.
The musicality remains sovereign, and while the voice is worn, she doesn't really disgrace herself either. The big high note is rough, but what came before was actually remarkably poised and steady. And NO soprano, I mean NO SOPRANO, sings the middle section with such heartbreaking elegance...she creates magic where other sopranos prefer to glide over, and that was her genius.

I quit singing and training because I felt I could never be as good as Maria Callas...She is the only singer I envy for her talent...I've been told I might have made it but I want to be on my own level as Maria has always been on a level of her own...til this day I have yet to have heard a singer as great as Maria Callas...a talent no words can describe...just listening to her sing makes me cry and I am in Aaawww of this woman

It seems to me to be the point that everybody is missing that even the greatest singer uses less power and less adrenalin at a recital with piano accompaniment (and the pianist here is terrible, to boot) than at a staged operatic performance with orchestra. If one construes this rendition as that of a "Lied" rather than of an operatic aria, it is unequalled.
I think this was 1974, just 3 yrs before she died. She lost her voice, her love and her pride, It always breaks my heart when I listen to her from her final tour.

Why does everyone think that Callas is the best? I think she's absolutely great in this piece, and her losing her voice makes this piece complete and emotional.
I find her earlier work flat and poor in emotion... I truly believe that she made it to be this popular mainly by her looks and not so much by her voice....
Actually this was November 1973 in London, her penultimate British appearance (I was at the last one in December!). In Japan the following, where she is in stronger voice, she is wearing a spangled gown with a diaphanous red overdress.

what made this performance amazing and touching at the same time is because of the fact that she's trying to muster all that she can to give a good performance even though she herself know that her voice has deteriorated.

I would still have loved her, even if this were her best! She is so sincere, so moving, so true! Probably this kind of voice, like Sulioti's is not made to last long, but it is unique when it is so full of sentiments.
Ok, this is very far from vocal prime but still..
I'd take a declining Callas anyday over at least 70% singers because unlike all of them here she still has the drama, the fraseggio, the intensity, the colour, the accents.. and that has nothing to do with the integrity of the voice, that IS Callas.
Callas career in 1959/60 she lasted very short.She did a terrible comeback in 1964 that lasted only one year 1964/65 she was voiceless.Here in 1973 she faced the public after 8 years of not singing.This is very sad, she sings "Suicidio" with a closed piano and even though she can't be heard.Poor Maria

CALLAS is just legend...she even in her 50s was doing LIVE and even being in pain she is awesome and great as usual and forever...no pre-recorded stuff.

I quit singing and training because I felt I could never be as good as Maria Callas...She is the only singer I envy for her talent...I've been told I might have made it but I want to be on my own level as Maria has always been on a level of her own...til this day I have yet to have heard a singer as great as Maria Callas...a talent no words can describe...just listening to her sing makes me cry and I am in Aaawww of this woman

@claire0907807 Well I understand what you mean. I also sing opera, its hard work but i think its worth. Its a way to express yourself and its just an amazing feeling when I feel I am developing. Just let me say this. Everyone is unique and thats what makes us special, its the same with our voice, yes Maria is one of a kind but so are you and thats what make you special. Just continue to sing and enjoy the wonderful feeling. ;)

It seems to me to be the point that everybody is missing that even the greatest singer uses less power and less adrenalin at a recital with piano accompaniment (and the pianist here is terrible, to boot) than at a staged operatic performance with orchestra. If one construes this rendition as that of a "Lied" rather than of an operatic aria, it is unequalled.

Why does everyone think that Callas is the best? I think she's absolutely great in this piece, and her losing her voice makes this piece complete and emotional.
I find her earlier work flat and poor in emotion... I truly believe that she made it to be this popular mainly by her looks and not so much by her voice....

Actually this was November 1973 in London, her penultimate British appearance (I was at the last one in December!). In Japan the following, where she is in stronger voice, she is wearing a spangled gown with a diaphanous red overdress.

I'd take a declining Callas anyday over at least 70% singers because unlike all of them here she still has the drama, the fraseggio, the intensity, the colour, the accents.. and that has nothing to do with the integrity of the voice, that IS Callas.

Callas career in 1959/60 she lasted very short.She did a terrible comeback in 1964 that lasted only one year 1964/65 she was voiceless.Here in 1973 she faced the public after 8 years of not singing.This is very sad, she sings "Suicidio" with a closed piano and even though she can't be heard.Poor Maria

Lol anyway, I mean they lipsinc sometimes or mostly...otherwise LIVE will suck...they just put a recorded CD...Celine does sing LIVE though but some songs she can't anymore just do her best as she was doing maybe a decade ago but still she does the BEST LIVE now...NObody is equal to her. CALLAS is just legend...she even in her 50s was doing LIVE and even being in pain she is awesome and great as usual and forever...no pre-recorded stuff.

Exactly, eradesso. I rarely listen to these tour recordings. They are like Leonardo's Last Supper, a wreck of a painting, yet the greatest piece of art of the time. Callas will always be Callas. The tragedy of her life, the beauty of her art and the music history she made. Forever loved by all who love great singing.
