Actually, it will be VERY soft before it is actually tanned.
That deer hide will be like super thick flannel when she is done cabling and softening it. Then she needs to smoke it for it to actually be tanned.
And why bother with a sulphonic acid nasty kit when all you need is wood ash and brains or eggs and fire wood smoke. The whole point of posting this video was to have it fit with the rest that I posted on how to tan hides the way it was done before metal showed up in North AMERICA.
can anyone tell me how to tan a hide + keep the fur on? i want to make something out of animal fur but cant find out how to do it, i don't want to make leather i want the fur still on, if you know how, can you tell me, or even better make a video showing how.....thanks
Yes. Get the hide off the carcass. Scrape all the fat and meat off of the inside. Get some brains and smear them to the inside layer like finger paint. Fold the hide in in itself. Store in a cool place over night. Take it out the next day and start pulling it dry. The object is to keep the hide fibers in movement all the time until it is completely dry. This works great around a hot wood stove or open fire. Cabling also helps push the brins in and flex things. Egss are a good brains substitute.
She'll never get it started that way!

could someone tell me how to get the hide soft after its been salted and dryed
Normpercy 2 years ago
@Normpercy it won't be soft until you actually tan it. You can buy a tanning kit like Rittel's EZ-100 tanning kit.

does that risk tearing the hide?
Caveman0713 3 years ago
Not at all.
Unless of course the hide is rotten.
It is quite amazing how much pulling force a deer hide will take without any damage
