@0willsy01 Almost. The Russians were allowed to get to Berlin first. The US didn't want to get into a street fight in Berlin and the Russians were given the honor. They were attacked directly, while the US was not, and so the Russians were the best force to take Berlin. Fitting revenge. Remember almost 40% of the Russian casualties in the battle for Berlin were "friendly fire".

My Grandfather's "23rd Field Regiment ,Royal Canadian Artillery", Came in 7 weeks after D-Day, They were, however ready for D-Day, but not deployed for some reason. His Regiment continued on, until Cease fire. The 23rd's history can be found on my channel, including live video footage of the war, from Normandy to cease fire.

@johnbender1985 I agree we could not have won the war without the US due to their mass production of war weapons and their fighting manpower. However, the Canadians also landed on D Day along side the brits & Yanks and did quite well for themselves advancing futher inland then any of the allied countries. Also the Americans were not fighting for the Brits we were fighting for each other you did not come into the war to save Britain you came in because the Germans declared war on you.
@alibalibe100 Point of clarity....Americans did die before you think. There were 43 Americans flying with the RAF during the Battle of Britain, there were Americans on the Halifaxes bombing Germany at night, and there were American Merchant Marines dying trying to keep Britain supplied. While the losses for Americans were low, America was in the fight somewhat. Anyone who doesn't understand the war was won by a group of countries, a team of sorts but wasn't won by any one nation.
@poisonNova123, All of Europe would have converted to Nazism, and then would've spread to Asia, and sail/fly for America, while America could have built another Atom Bomb, to get rid of Germany. Basically, more hell would've broken loose.
@logoRH Point of clarity..the US did not impose a blockade of Japan, just an embargo of goods due to their aggression in China. A blockade is physical, while an embargo is passive. So the embargo was not a hostile act against Japan.
so far, i heard ppl saying that the Americans won WW2. ppl who think that and ppl who state that this is true are wrong. 3 things decided the course of WW2 those are:
1) The greek war of 1940.
2)The Russian winter
3) The invasion of Normandy.
In my opinion we must be thankfull to Greece beacuse they were outnumbered, and still they managed to stop the Axis from getting to Russia before the russian winter.
@atosafi1 You seem to forget....the Russians were allowed to get to Berlin first. They were given the capture of Berlin as a gift for their years of fighting.
@Homer6767 America came into the war in 1941 the war lasted till 1945 I don't call that near the end of the war. Also there were a number of other countries fighting Japan besides the Americans, try New Zealand, Australia and Britain to name a few. The same goes for Europe without the help of the Allied forces the US would not have rushed through Europe. At that time Russia was part of the Allied forces and could very well have beaten the Nazis on their own.
@Homer6767 OH MY GOD!!!!! WOW!! Talk about not even a clue about history. What were you on when you made this up? You are so far off as to be laughable if it weren't so wrong. WOW
I think the war could have been won without D-Day But it was still one of the most importing things in newer history its send a symbol of hope Throughout Europe and without that there wouldn’t have been as much resistance against the Germans I might not like how the american government acts and used to act, but what they did on that day will forever have a place in my heart,
@LittleCommi the men who fought against the Germans at that day deserves the highest kind of respect, just like the Russians and the resistance do, but still this day Symbolizes the end of Hitler’s regime and the start of a new world
@LittleCommi D-Day's main accomplishment was preventing the Soviet Union from taking over all of Europe. The Soviets toward the end of the war were quite capable of beating the Nazis on their own. The D-Day landings resulted in the liberation of European countries that could have fallen victim to the SU also it helped to speed up an end to the war in Europe.
they started to bomb Germany with the age's best bombers (B-17),from there there was no way back...Germany couldn't face a 3 front war. By the D-day, it was for sure that the germans are defeated,it was only a matter of time. D-day was the last big punch for Germany... I bound before these brave men (Y)
without doubt, the german army was the best army ever, too bad that they were on the dark side...they were defeated because of Hitler was thinking of himself that he is a better millitary official than e.g. Guderian and Rommel... and the other "beg fish" too e.g. Göering established luftwaffe, greatly improved it but never realised that in the war of defence you don't need as much bombers rather than fighters...in my opinion the turning point was when japan attacked the U.S.A,they had to join in...
I think the real turning-point was after the buttle in Stalingrad. If it wasn't for the Soviet victory in that buttle the D-day wouldn't even been planned.
My question is why don't celebrate D-Day as a national holiday? This was perhaps the most significant battle in history yet we don't take the time to celebrate and honor those who died that day.
That day a world was rescued from potential german victory in Europe. What would the world have been like. We do not even want to think about the possible conseuences. That day brave men, some who did not make it out of the higgins boats. And those who went to fight on set an example for future generations of young Americans. Same feeling. Although D-Day (US & British armies) happened in Normandy, on the western coast of France. It was the Anvil invasion (US & French armies) which took place in the southern part of France, on the Riviera.
i read book bout this and in the beginning it said "War isnt funny as a whole, its a grotesque excercise in which human blood and sacrfice. Every face on D-Day had a face family friends. These are those people that waded ashore to liberate europe. we are still in thier debt..."
Invasion of Normandy some authors name whom i 4get
Wrong. It is military code for the day of the particular operation. There were a few landings and invasions with the name D-Day attached to it. The D has no significance in regards to standing for a word that begins with the letter D.
hitler did a good job cus it took us far too long to realise what he was capable of! he got to france before any major fight was thrown back at them! d-day was just one of so many fronts. south pacific, africa, normandy, italy, turkey! soooo many! it wasnt just america or britain that fought back! if america hadnt been attacked via pearl harbour...they probly wouldnt have entered the wat until britain was just a wasteland
Er. They did.... But it wasn't like today with serious accuracy and satellites confirming this and that. They fired a load of ordnance at the beaches and hoped for the best... Thats all they could do.
Sorry to disagree, but the true honor is for The Soviets who won the war in the Eastern front and lost 10.000.00 millions military personal compared to 800.000 by the UK and USA.
However, all Westerners are taught to remember D-Day as the decisive point. Very ironic, indeed.
The Soviets losing so many military personal had a lot to do with the fact they were so badly equipped at the start of their campaign. They also had a lot of help from the other allies with equipment and supplies. Even little Britain sent convoys to the mighty soviets.
D-day was the opening of the last front, ergo a decisive point in the war. You're wrong to think its ironic comrade....
First, I am not a comrade, just tell the fact as it happens not as i learned from Saving Private Ryan.
1 - The Allies promised to open the Second front in 1942 to Foreign minister Molotov. It came 2 1/2 years way behind the schedule. Why do you think Stalin mistrusted the west all the time after that?
Stalin was a paraniod meglomaniac who trusted very few of his own generals let alone any non Soviet. Just as hungry for expanded empires and mass murder as Hitler, the only real difference being their ideologies. He killed millions including his own people in prison camps.
Non trust and cold war were a by product of the allies possession of the Atomic Bomb at the end of the war! It was good the red army did their part to defeat Nazism. But thats about it. A Disillussioned man...Comrade!!!
2 - The Russians received little help from the Allies and Britain quickly cut its convoys from the Arctic when the first loses came. Or don´t you remember Stalin-Churchill discussions about resuming the convoy and calling the British afraid and Churchill replying "The Russians are Land people, We are Sea People"...
3 - Sure D-day was a turning point as well as Stalingrad was.
The irony is on how Hollywood´s marketing has worldwide "sold" the idea that it was only the brave west and through D-Day which defeated the Nazis. Russians participation always seemed almost non important to general western people and media. (I want to emphasize that i am from the western block).
Yes - I know what you mean about medias' portrail of the end of the war. I think the fact the cold war came off the back of ww2, would have contributed to the west naturally not wanting to make the USSR look like Knights in shining armour. They became the new enemy and most 'entertainment' films would have been made during this peroid. It kind of makes sense. However I'd put money on the Soviet side of the story of ww2 being just a bias, if history is anything to go by, wouldn't you? Comrade..:)
Politicly germany was evil I think, but I still admire the german army. one country fighting on three fronts after d-day against a much greater army and they still lasted almost a jear... wow
Don't hate your country, Hate Hitler and the Nazis.....Yes the Allies won and that is a Great thing. But people know it isn't the average Germans fault....Your country is now a valued allie now!
Well Hitler, the Allies' greatest ally through his complete stupidity, went into a tantrum and no German generals felt like asking him to release the panzer divisions that, more than likely, could've drove the invasion back into the sea. However, the reason the Allies won that day was with pure courage and out-soldiering.
but if you think your right about the number of troops, you have to think the germans had the advantage with the fortifications and height advantage, cliffs and bunkers and barbwire and stuff like that, have you seen normandy beach too? the allies had to run pretty far to get to cover and it was wide open beach too,the germans also took cover in bunkers during the bombings on the beach so they took very few loses before the landings, the americans gave the germans a ass kickn that day!
Well, part of the success of the invasion was driving German forces to other areas by feeding them false information and using decoys. Almost all of the tanks that were part of the assault sunk, which helped out the Germans. Also, the bombers and ships were only able to fire at visually confirmed targets. Which also helped the Germans because of the low altitude clouds that were concealing targets.
While Mongolia's conquest attempt at Japan was the largest ATTEMPTED seaborne invasion, it doesn't really count because they never actually landed; they were all destroyed by the storm; whereas the assault on Normandy in 1944 actually had successful landings; let alone was successful altogether.
Hey, jerkoff, hitler's mother (whoever she was)could have prevented all of this and saved the world a lot of trouble if she'd only kept her knees together.
he meant 24000 and not 2400...and yeah it is true that this was the largest invasion.. the whole mongolian fleet was defeadet by a monsun or tajfun. 24000 ships sunk.. The japanease people are still talking about this historic moment. It is said that the japanease Soldiers where praying to their gods that they should help them and they believe that the monsun was the result of their praying!
It would seem nobody here has really learn t anything about what is.... two sides fighting over opinion. Do not use honorable peoples names to justify todays political agenda, thesse are different times and different circumstance. As a British person I am taught to respect the people who died in the war, be it British, American or German.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i wonder why are there so many tributes and games bout invasion of normandy, it was just an minor front of germany on which a small force of the wermacht was fighting.
first of all it wasnt in germany it was in france second of all it was the largest seaborne invasion in history get your facts straight before you post something so disrespectfull
u are a fool do u know wat happened and if u do u are hate less people died so u can be alive today so keep quite and make a tribute to the solider who died to save ur life and ask me how they save ur live u grandparent and backwards
Well, because it was a particularly deadly campaign (about 80 219 total on all sides), and because it marked the beginning of America's entry into WWII in Europe and the liberation of France.
invasion? wtf the yanks where fighting only 20 per cent of the german wermacht like it was just a diversion and the allies had more casualties than germans and thats with HUGE air power Huge numerical superiority...lol u yanks sucked gainst the germans.u where nothin without ur 5 to 1 germans
dont hold america responsible for an idiot president,us soldiers are still heroes and are just doing there job,oh and lets not give the french much credit for ww2 :}
God Bless You Americans, You will always have my faith for the courage you gave us! And lets not also forget the brave Canadians, British, French and Poles that also went in on d-day.
The problem is that no-one knows who killed more Russian soldiers, The Germans or the Russians themselves.

i read book bout this and in the beginning it said "War isnt funny as a whole, its a grotesque excercise in which human blood and sacrfice. Every face on D-Day had a face family friends. These are those people that waded ashore to liberate europe. we are still in thier debt..."

War is the WORST thing ever. Sadly, it's something that won't ever stop. So many evil people in the world (Hitler, Tojo, etc.), we gotta fight it.
Just honor the men that do, that fight and, sadly, die to stop it.

the world would have probably remained in a state of war for the last 60 years...I guess in a way, it has anyway

descision day
mrkaribikdomkee 2 years ago

IHaveKewlSocks 3 years ago
happy that you arent saying "germans" instead of hitler
NKCrime 2 years ago
Er. They did.... But it wasn't like today with serious accuracy and satellites confirming this and that. They fired a load of ordnance at the beaches and hoped for the best... Thats all they could do.

the planes were mainly bombing the beaches of normandy to make foxholes for the soldiers to take cover in...

Sorry to disagree, but the true honor is for The Soviets who won the war in the Eastern front and lost 10.000.00 millions military personal compared to 800.000 by the UK and USA.
However, all Westerners are taught to remember D-Day as the decisive point. Very ironic, indeed.
uzapuca 3 years ago
What's ironic about it?
The Soviets losing so many military personal had a lot to do with the fact they were so badly equipped at the start of their campaign. They also had a lot of help from the other allies with equipment and supplies. Even little Britain sent convoys to the mighty soviets.
D-day was the opening of the last front, ergo a decisive point in the war. You're wrong to think its ironic comrade....
Doooozer 3 years ago
First, I am not a comrade, just tell the fact as it happens not as i learned from Saving Private Ryan.
1 - The Allies promised to open the Second front in 1942 to Foreign minister Molotov. It came 2 1/2 years way behind the schedule. Why do you think Stalin mistrusted the west all the time after that?
uzapuca 3 years ago
Stalin was a paraniod meglomaniac who trusted very few of his own generals let alone any non Soviet. Just as hungry for expanded empires and mass murder as Hitler, the only real difference being their ideologies. He killed millions including his own people in prison camps.
Non trust and cold war were a by product of the allies possession of the Atomic Bomb at the end of the war! It was good the red army did their part to defeat Nazism. But thats about it. A Disillussioned man...Comrade!!!
Doooozer 3 years ago
2 - The Russians received little help from the Allies and Britain quickly cut its convoys from the Arctic when the first loses came. Or don´t you remember Stalin-Churchill discussions about resuming the convoy and calling the British afraid and Churchill replying "The Russians are Land people, We are Sea People"...
3 - Sure D-day was a turning point as well as Stalingrad was.
uzapuca 3 years ago
The irony is on how Hollywood´s marketing has worldwide "sold" the idea that it was only the brave west and through D-Day which defeated the Nazis. Russians participation always seemed almost non important to general western people and media. (I want to emphasize that i am from the western block).
uzapuca 3 years ago
Yes - I know what you mean about medias' portrail of the end of the war. I think the fact the cold war came off the back of ww2, would have contributed to the west naturally not wanting to make the USSR look like Knights in shining armour. They became the new enemy and most 'entertainment' films would have been made during this peroid. It kind of makes sense. However I'd put money on the Soviet side of the story of ww2 being just a bias, if history is anything to go by, wouldn't you? Comrade..:)

probably the 1 great advantage the Germans had over all was Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. greatest tank commander in the world
soukupb 3 years ago 3
Well Hitler, the Allies' greatest ally through his complete stupidity, went into a tantrum and no German generals felt like asking him to release the panzer divisions that, more than likely, could've drove the invasion back into the sea. However, the reason the Allies won that day was with pure courage and out-soldiering.
juozas23 3 years ago
but if you think your right about the number of troops, you have to think the germans had the advantage with the fortifications and height advantage, cliffs and bunkers and barbwire and stuff like that, have you seen normandy beach too? the allies had to run pretty far to get to cover and it was wide open beach too,the germans also took cover in bunkers during the bombings on the beach so they took very few loses before the landings, the americans gave the germans a ass kickn that day!

neverhoodyn 4 years ago
Well, part of the success of the invasion was driving German forces to other areas by feeding them false information and using decoys. Almost all of the tanks that were part of the assault sunk, which helped out the Germans. Also, the bombers and ships were only able to fire at visually confirmed targets. Which also helped the Germans because of the low altitude clouds that were concealing targets.
Mock300 4 years ago
While Mongolia's conquest attempt at Japan was the largest ATTEMPTED seaborne invasion, it doesn't really count because they never actually landed; they were all destroyed by the storm; whereas the assault on Normandy in 1944 actually had successful landings; let alone was successful altogether.
tehmast3r3r 4 years ago
Hitler could have prevented all of this if he just Let the millitary do there job and let him do his and sit back and watch.

Hey, jerkoff, hitler's mother (whoever she was)could have prevented all of this and saved the world a lot of trouble if she'd only kept her knees together.

germans outnumbered the allies at d-day enarly 2 to one
JamaicanMan18 4 years ago
he meant 24000 and not 2400...and yeah it is true that this was the largest invasion.. the whole mongolian fleet was defeadet by a monsun or tajfun.
