@ddtreez If you want a low-cost Monome then build an Arduinome. They are not hard to make, parts are about 200 dollars in total or less depending on the material of the case; if any at all, and all instructions are on monome dot org. I decided to just buy one to support the original builder and because they are built with very high quality materials and just look nice. :P

Actually, no, the monome came mid-2000's and has thus inspired all music genres - as a piano, a tuba or bassoon have also in their own time. Usage of technology holds no genre. Love of the genre or music in general, though, is infinite. Peace
