take the front and rear heads off. Use plumers putty or any play dough material. Place a small amount on each side of the piston, and screw the pistons back on. Turn the engine over by hand and take the heads off. You can then mike the squiahed putty to determine if the crankshaft needs to be moved forward or backwards. I always do the checking with the engine in the car. Looks like a good restoration process.
@a22stanley - Do you mean the hi pitched noise? If so that was the exhaust. I run it out of the car and it seems just like my other engine. The method you describe sounds like a great idea.
@pskittle488 You are exactly correct, the same power impulse as a modern V-8. This design is genius. Thansk and hopefully I will light this car off next fall.
This is a 20HP engine, the boiler burns vaporized kerosene, the boiler from col iron would take about 20-30 minutes but if the pilot is on and warm, you could be driving in under a minute.

Yes, it sounds like a piston hitting the head. The front cylinder should have .015" more clearence on the fron head than the rear head.

Check the clearence on the pistons. It sounds like the left piston is hitting the cylinder head. Otherwise it sounds good.

ono! I can't really believe that Steam Engine can be shrinked down to that size and functional!
Steam punk can become real!
what is a fuel that the boiler use? coal or raw petroleum? or wood?
and how long does it takes to start the engine?

Great vid, I've wondered about the engine layout in these.
