  • i moved back to San Francisco from Colorado a few months back. I was driving down the Embarcadero with the windows down and this version came on. The smell of the Morning air and the bay, the sea gulls siging along. It was a great moment and I couldnt stop Smileing. I played it loud and proud and got lots of smiles from people who heard it.

    Amazing, ty for posting.

  • I remember this song from '63, 7th grade living in Victor Tulane Court (projects) in Montgomery, AL. My mom ran a beautyshop out of the kitchen & women were lined up to get their hair fried on Saturday afternoons. This song brought back the smell of a hot comb pressing hair and seeing a can of Royal Crown hair grease on the counter. Moma was making money, $8 for a press & curl, shampoo was $2 extra. Women would clap & sing to this song. Now if you just put a penny on that turntable arm...

  • IT!

  • If you are from Chicago,....This was a bop record

  • I always think of Angels in the Outfield when I hear this song.

  • My grandmother had this LP when I was a kid. I LOVED it back then and love it now. THANK YOU for putting it on youtube!

  • FARRAGUT HIGH SCHOOL FRIDAY DANCE THRID FLOOR IN THE HALL BY ROOM 313!!!!!!! music will never be this good again!!!!!!!!!!!

  • GOOD MUSIC, GOOD QUALITY, I'M 28, I LOVE THE IMPRESSIONS.

  • The Impressions were, in my humble opinion, the best of all of the 1960's groups. This was thier biggest hit reaching #4 POP and #1 R&B.

  • Ive listened to this song 6 times today, 4 times from huey lewis and the news, 1 time from curtis mayfield, and finally i have found the original by the impressions. ALL GREAT VERSIONS

  • i heard this song in the movie "because i said so".... i just love it, i wanna sing and dance to it all day :)

  • Today is my late Grandmother's 100th Birthday! She loved this song and so do I! I still love to dance because of my moments with her and family.

  • @MsKattyKatKat Glad you enjoyed the song. God Bless your Grandmother.

  • @bankman58 Awwwh! Blessings to you too!

  • I've been trying to find a good version of this on youtube that is not only good quality but is actually Curtis Mayfield....this one is perfect! Love the commentary and the quality, excellent work man!

  • I'm only 19, so I just remember this song from "The Sandlot" but what a great song it is. Curtis was an absolute genius in every way. We need more folks like him in music nowadays.

  • This song will never grow old ♥ sounds better each and every time !

  • Northern Soul. Interesting. Great song, of course. How many subgenre of soul are there? I can think of White Soul, Gospel Soul, and.. what else? Are there thins like Eastern Soul (Seoul, South Korea?), Western Soul - or West Coast Soul, akin to West Coast Jazz, and Southern Soul? In my fairly large youtube music collection I have folks in my Soul section such as Ray Charles, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, The Delfonics, Solomon Burke, Joss Stone, Aretha, Otis, etc. What defines the Philly Sound? Thanks!

  • @benjaminlhaines hey dont forget about Ike&Tina Turner!!!!

  • A #1 song for The Impressions on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 120th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #4 on the Top 40 charts. I have Check Out Your Mind on 45.

  • you should be a DJ, man.

  • I love how the record looks as if it's been played to death. Just like it should be.

  • i was in high school when this came out. what a great song and great soul group! how about people get ready. thanks soso much for posting!!!!

  • WOW!!! Thank you so so mkuch!!! As a "boomer" This was like one of my most favorite songs...AWESOME!!! (Sure miss these tunes...thanks so much for posting this song!)

  • Remember these days? The bop, two step and the walk? Dig it and remember...

  • Classic! Makes me wish I still had my 1963 Mercury Meteor S33 to cruise to this in.

  • i think this one's better than the original Mayfield-song

  • @ritchiekleingebbink ? This is original.

  • @luvureally

Oh really? I didn't know... shame on me!!

  • Real records!!! Heck, yes!!! Listen to that "sweet hiss and crackle". Just like a fine wine it gets better to the ear over time.

  • Bankman58, Do you have "If this must End"?

  • sheer beauty... the harmonies are heavenly. no matter how bad I feel, this always lifts me to a higher plane. Thanks

  • SAY ITS ALL RIGHT!

  • Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler in one group at the same time. Amazing!! Two of the best singers ever! When Curtis sings, "Some day I'll find me a woman" I get the chills.

  • @j1me2ra3j Have you ever heard them do "Your Precious Love"(Jerry Butler and The Impressions)?

  • Many thanks! My mind went back in time to the many dancing parties in apartments in my early teens back in the 60's and a cute girl named Beverly who used to stick to me like glue in this type of song. Oh, my god! What great memories! Thanks again!

  • Nice upload! Thank you.

  • Ah, that delicious sound of a record spinning in and out on the blank bits! Gorgeous record, this. Just trying to remember which other version I've heard?

  • Yea, It's Alright.

  • Thank you!!!!!~~~~~ Awesome!

  • the ultimate mellow party song

  • Cutis and the " Iceman" what a combo. One is smooth as silk, and the other ice cold and refreshing.

  • Maaan if you don't like this song you're a fool lolz

  • Peterbregge, I have to make another comment on this song - indeed, the whole instrumentation (including the bass and drums playing "insanely") is incredible. There's something barely audible in the background (muted keyboard? or as I suspect a guitar chord being played rapidly) that almost sounds like very faint chimes. This whole production is amazing, and it still only backs up the three men singing. What a SOUND.

  • love this one to..

  • i'm 14 and i looove this song and the music of the 50's and 60's! this is REAL music! not the pointless songs we hear on the radio now.

  • This is one of the greatest and most soulful songs of all time that moved a whole generation and 5 people gave it a thumbs down? WTF?

  • My all time favorite-The Impressions!

  • THANKS FOR THE BACKGROUND INFO ITS ALWAYS HELPFUL

  • Did the Impressions do multiple takes of this song? This cut seems slower than the version I have. Either way I love it.

  • A Classic!

  • Love dis

  • Love dis

  • uI heard this on satelite radio this morning. I was hoping to find it here on you tube. Love this song! ;I still have my 45! Thanks for posting bankman58!

  • My oldest sis taught me this song, RIP Lulu. With her, my sisters and I learn to sing beautiful harmony. A very nice memory to have.

  • My VERY Favorite Impression's Song....AND there are MANY. THANKS.

  • The Impressions were the musical bridge from the older doo wop style to the harder soul style. You can hear it the the bridge of this SONG!

    Giants of music...

  • They don't do it like this anymore!

  • wonderful walk down memory lane...keep 'em coming!!!!!!

  • Its one of those great beats, that makes you happy inside.

  • best version out there i think

  • Absolutely love this song! R.I.P. Curtis Mayfield.

  • I watch a lot of videos where people spin classic songs on wax, and I agree with other comments here that your commentary at the beginning of the video really adds something special. Excellenté!!

  • @experiessence Thank you much. I believe that it's important to share information about the song or the artist. It makes the song more meaningful.

  • @bankman58

i really like to find lyrics or some info on the song right on the spot, but would be better to just add it all in the textbox as i put lots of the songs on a playlist and listen to them over and over: )

  • I'd much rather hear this gem from my past than the nasty kinds of rap people soil the air with these days.

  • Great quality on this video. Makes me nostalgic for a nice record player!

  • Besides "AMEN" , This is my Favorite Impression's Song. Thank You for The Post.

  • If you get to see the Impressions, do so. Even without Curtis Mayfield (RIP) they put on a terrific show. I saw them and Jerry Butler at the Carter Baron a month ago. People couldn't stop dancing and singing. And they still sound great.

  • This is fantastic! Thanks for the great song and the info you provided for it!

  • this brings me way back from when i was little girl its remains me of my ma and aunt and the whole gang use to bop off this old jam.

  • wont be by comp for a while after nextt week. would LOVE to know who

the background musicians were on these sessions

  • Yes! It is

  • Perry Projects Buffalo, New York the '60s...where did it all go. gone too fast.

I go back there from time to time. we lived on Hayward St. 2 blocks from James Johnson aka Rick James. wish I had a time machine...

  • ...and I always remember this song both from the movie "The flamingo kid", where Matt Dillon as the working-class title character is stumbling around knocking over the food at an early 60s fancy outdoor country-club type gathering he's attending with his girlfriend while this song plays in the background, and for Huey Lewis and the news' decent a capella remake of it. GREAT music...I pray Curtis Mayfield is in eternity with Jesus.

  • The knowledge you drop should not be missed!! YOU BRING THE SONG TO LIFE! Thank you for th memories...

  • @ebbony54 Thanks ebbony54, I believe it's important to share the history behind the songs.

  • this is when the music had soul!! not alot of soul these days people just care about the money

  • One of the very best songs of all time!

  • The Impressions... one of the very best Groups of the R&R era !!!

  • Soul seems to be missing a lot in life today!

  • This song was written during a time of such turmoil and still manages to achieve inner piece. As i watched the record go round and round i remembered the days when musicians and singers gathered to create a good vibe. Today, music has been dehumanized and successfully replaced by machines.

  • I love this song! it's nice to hear it in a sunny day... well, it's good anyway! =)

  • MUSIC !!!!!!

  • love the commentary, wish more people were doing it. thanks for the great tunes. keep it up brother. rock on!

  • June is Black Music Month.

  • HOW I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!

  • Curtis Mayfield is a genius

  • @bassted666 Not only a genius but a master poet. =-).

  • Love it. Takes me right back to High School !

  • Listen to the drums and bass in this song. What they're doing is insane. This entire recording is mind blowing!

  • @peterbagge feel that way about the Major Lance records,

  • November 1963 - big hit on the charts when JFK was assassinated. It remember it like it was yesterday.

(Huey Lewis can NOT do this song justice)

  • shut up abt jfk and his exploding head. dumb baby boomers ramble too much

  • @anotherD3MISE dumb baby boomers? without us there would be no you bunch of

lost soul screwballs. without us there would be no computers, no cells phones,

no nothing you no-nothing asshole...now go fuck yourself at the gay parade.

  • LOL! You are so right!

  • Huey Lewis was born in 1950 which means he MIGHT have turned 13 by the time the Impressions released this recording. WHAT are you talking about??

    Huey Lewis sang the original??????????

HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA. Sure buddy.

  • I'm pretty sure beaupeep just has a skewed sense of humor

  • yeah...you got me on my skewed sense of humor. LOL!

  • Huey Lewis! Original, Not!

  • @beaupeep1 I'm afraid you have it backward, this was recorded in the mid 60's. Huey covered this much later

  • Curtis always had a message.

    Choice song. Real music. Cheers.

  • Yes. Exactly that. x'3

    They don't make music like this anymore... ;_;

  • Now that's music, good 'ole soul music. Love it.

  • Great song.Transcends all racial groups-the lyrics at "when you wake up early in the morning......" go right to the heart of all people.A timeless masterpiece.

  • You are absolutely correct; transcends all people, time, and place.

  • Another great tune - People Get Ready by The Impressions. It is beautiful and I have always loved it. I believe you like it as well.

  • I do very much like it.Mayfield was a great talent.

  • @1994g0 Your observation of this wonderful song is beautifully stated. The greatest qualities of music--universality and timelessness--are all very abundant.

  • holy words man..

  • @FunNotNuts that's true, but this wasn't Motown

  • EverWinterNights,

You put this music in the right contexts.

  • I have not heard this in years, takes you right back to those great groups of the 60s

But let me say one thing when the brothers harmonized back then it would just nail you to a spot and you had to say

  • Stephen King's It, what a great scene with this song!

  • the youts don't get it today for the most part. great song!!!

  • I love this song! This is the original and best. This song has alot of meaning to me, I'm a stressful person in some ways, and anytime I hear this song, or think about it, Iam instantly relieved of stress, I love it so much, does anyone else feel this way? Just those words, and the way the lead singer sings it..

Its alright, have a good time, cause its alright, oh its alright.

    :)

  • Never looked at it that way. Now I know why this has been one of my "go-to- songs" over the years. These have indeed been, and still are, stressful times. Jerry Butler, CurtisMayfield, and the Impressions are one of the few groups that had a good lead singer leave yet still managed to keep that same wonderful sound. Thanks. Now I know why after hear it, I feel that "it's alright."

  • i feal you ever winter, no matter whats happening when i hear this song all emotions go away and all i wanna do is clap along and move my feat.

  • Oh yeah, that's the stuff.

  • I love this song I was a just 2 years old dancing at my aunt and uncle wedding anniversary. Now this is music nice and smooth.

  • this ong was one of the most memorable songs of the historical events of the '60s!!

  • Comment removed

  • great song

    sing along

    because its all right

  • many thx for the up!! great tune

  • What a great feel-good song...

  • The greatest:

Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie, Jackie Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Roy Hamilton, Roger Whittaker, Kenny Rogers, Nat King Cole, Oh, the list goes on: Sammy Davis Jr. Frank Sinatra, Me, and hundreds of others: Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin etc. I better stop for this will take too long.

  • Probably - it should be thousands - whole lot of singing groups through the decades - many excellent - especially the doo wop groups where their 5-part harmony was all the instruments required. Those people could really sing and they didn't have the technology we have now for recording music and they still outshone whatever instruments happened to be playing.

Sadly, many never made it into the limelight. But, the locals knew who they were. There still are many great singers-continuum.

  • this jam make every thing all right!

  • Definitely a classic. Whenever I hear it on the car radio - I just got to move and tap the steering wheel. It's All Right - yeah- actually It's Awsome.

  • The song is on the movie Stephen King's "It" so great, i love it!

  • this is the precursor to "Hot fun In the Summertime" by Sly & The Family Stone(listen to that beat)- Curtis Mayfield was a great songwriter, performer, arra
