i moved back to San Francisco from Colorado a few months back. I was driving down the Embarcadero with the windows down and this version came on. The smell of the Morning air and the bay, the sea gulls siging along. It was a great moment and I couldnt stop Smileing. I played it loud and proud and got lots of smiles from people who heard it.
I remember this song from '63, 7th grade living in Victor Tulane Court (projects) in Montgomery, AL. My mom ran a beautyshop out of the kitchen & women were lined up to get their hair fried on Saturday afternoons. This song brought back the smell of a hot comb pressing hair and seeing a can of Royal Crown hair grease on the counter. Moma was making money, $8 for a press & curl, shampoo was $2 extra. Women would clap & sing to this song. Now if you just put a penny on that turntable arm...
Ive listened to this song 6 times today, 4 times from huey lewis and the news, 1 time from curtis mayfield, and finally i have found the original by the impressions. ALL GREAT VERSIONS
I've been trying to find a good version of this on youtube that is not only good quality but is actually Curtis Mayfield....this one is perfect! Love the commentary and the quality, excellent work man!
I'm only 19, so I just remember this song from "The Sandlot" but what a great song it is. Curtis was an absolute genius in every way. We need more folks like him in music nowadays.
Northern Soul. Interesting. Great song, of course. How many subgenre of soul are there? I can think of White Soul, Gospel Soul, and.. what else? Are there thins like Eastern Soul (Seoul, South Korea?), Western Soul - or West Coast Soul, akin to West Coast Jazz, and Southern Soul? In my fairly large youtube music collection I have folks in my Soul section such as Ray Charles, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, The Delfonics, Solomon Burke, Joss Stone, Aretha, Otis, etc. What defines the Philly Sound? Thanks!
A #1 song for The Impressions on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 120th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #4 on the Top 40 charts. I have Check Out Your Mind on 45.
WOW!!! Thank you so so mkuch!!! As a "boomer" This was like one of my most favorite songs...AWESOME!!! (Sure miss these tunes...thanks so much for posting this song!)
Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler in one group at the same time. Amazing!! Two of the best singers ever! When Curtis sings, "Some day I'll find me a woman" I get the chills.
Many thanks! My mind went back in time to the many dancing parties in apartments in my early teens back in the 60's and a cute girl named Beverly who used to stick to me like glue in this type of song. Oh, my god! What great memories! Thanks again!
Ah, that delicious sound of a record spinning in and out on the blank bits! Gorgeous record, this. Just trying to remember which other version I've heard?
Peterbregge, I have to make another comment on this song - indeed, the whole instrumentation (including the bass and drums playing "insanely") is incredible. There's something barely audible in the background (muted keyboard? or as I suspect a guitar chord being played rapidly) that almost sounds like very faint chimes. This whole production is amazing, and it still only backs up the three men singing. What a SOUND.
uI heard this on satelite radio this morning. I was hoping to find it here on you tube. Love this song! ;I still have my 45! Thanks for posting bankman58!
I watch a lot of videos where people spin classic songs on wax, and I agree with other comments here that your commentary at the beginning of the video really adds something special. Excellenté!!
i really like to find lyrics or some info on the song right on the spot, but would be better to just add it all in the textbox as i put lots of the songs on a playlist and listen to them over and over: )
If you get to see the Impressions, do so. Even without Curtis Mayfield (RIP) they put on a terrific show. I saw them and Jerry Butler at the Carter Baron a month ago. People couldn't stop dancing and singing. And they still sound great.
...and I always remember this song both from the movie "The flamingo kid", where Matt Dillon as the working-class title character is stumbling around knocking over the food at an early 60s fancy outdoor country-club type gathering he's attending with his girlfriend while this song plays in the background, and for Huey Lewis and the news' decent a capella remake of it. GREAT music...I pray Curtis Mayfield is in eternity with Jesus.
This song was written during a time of such turmoil and still manages to achieve inner piece. As i watched the record go round and round i remembered the days when musicians and singers gathered to create a good vibe. Today, music has been dehumanized and successfully replaced by machines.
Great song.Transcends all racial groups-the lyrics at "when you wake up early in the morning......" go right to the heart of all people.A timeless masterpiece.
@1994g0 Your observation of this wonderful song is beautifully stated. The greatest qualities of music--universality and timelessness--are all very abundant.
I love this song! This is the original and best. This song has alot of meaning to me, I'm a stressful person in some ways, and anytime I hear this song, or think about it, Iam instantly relieved of stress, I love it so much, does anyone else feel this way? Just those words, and the way the lead singer sings it..
Its alright, have a good time, cause its alright, oh its alright.
Never looked at it that way. Now I know why this has been one of my "go-to- songs" over the years. These have indeed been, and still are, stressful times. Jerry Butler, CurtisMayfield, and the Impressions are one of the few groups that had a good lead singer leave yet still managed to keep that same wonderful sound. Thanks. Now I know why after hear it, I feel that "it's alright."
Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie, Jackie Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Roy Hamilton, Roger Whittaker, Kenny Rogers, Nat King Cole, Oh, the list goes on: Sammy Davis Jr. Frank Sinatra, Me, and hundreds of others: Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin etc. I better stop for this will take too long.
Probably - it should be thousands - whole lot of singing groups through the decades - many excellent - especially the doo wop groups where their 5-part harmony was all the instruments required. Those people could really sing and they didn't have the technology we have now for recording music and they still outshone whatever instruments happened to be playing.
Sadly, many never made it into the limelight. But, the locals knew who they were. There still are many great singers-continuum.
Definitely a classic. Whenever I hear it on the car radio - I just got to move and tap the steering wheel. It's All Right - yeah- actually It's Awsome.
this is the precursor to "Hot fun In the Summertime" by Sly & The Family Stone(listen to that beat)- Curtis Mayfield was a great songwriter, performer, arra
