I never met my dad's older brother. He was a Builder 2nd Class, 4th Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (Sea Bees), deployed to SE Asia 1970-72. 6 months after he got back, while out drinking to forget, he left a bar in his 69 Mustang, got sideways, and hit a semi head-on. He didn't die in Vietnam, but my grandmother said Vietnam killed him.
And so all know, Niles actually grew up in New Bremen, OH, not South Dakota as the song says. He graduated with my dad and was a good friend of his. Thanks to all who served this great nation!
i grew up in south dakota close to deadwood, and to hear niles story really hits home, i served in the marine corps, and its is true that greater love hath no man then to lay down his life for his brother.. heres a shot for you niles and all the great men lost in these wars! god bless this country
i have much respect for Niles Harris. but with regard to the description, Niles was not Special Forces, I am in the 173rd and it is to me the BEST paratrooper unit in this great military. God bless the USA
You can say what you want about the Vietnam war and why it was fought, but you gotta have an unending respect and admiration for someone who went through the hell people like Niles Harris and Theodore Shamblin went through.
@ dwhunter1...My name is trish and my father died in this conflict(ironically on the 11th veteran's day). I was only 3 months old and he saw me once. There was only one other man who survived in company b. I would like to reach Niles Harris and ask if he knew my father. His name is Theodore Maxie Shamblin. He was in the 173rd,company B. Wounded on november 8th and died on Nov.11th from wounds he received. If you know how to reach Niles, plz ask him for me.Thank you.
Damn... I never knew how bad this actualy was... GOD BLESS YA NILES! Greater love hath no man then to lay down his life for a friend. God bless the 173rd Airborne. God bless the Army. God bless the armed forces. God bless America! Amen!
Niles Harris, I salute you and thank you for your service. I do want to say that while you are an inspiration, the true heroes are the ones who didn't make it home.
Thank you Mr. Harris for your service to this country, as well as your story. You are a good man. I hope your life is great from here on out.....you certainly have earned it. Thanks to B and R for sharing Mr. Harris' story too.
I had the great plasure of spending 5 days with Niles recently . What a true hero and just a fantastc person, I feel very proud to have met him and I am very honored to be able to now call him friend.
I served in this new "mistake" too bad people just refuse to understand before it's too late.
There were eight of us, from my high school and neighborhood that joined. I'm all that's left. I've said goodbye and played trumpet for each of them and comforted their families.
Please, please, don't make our Generals, Admirals, Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers say in vain, "On Behalf of a Grateful Nation." Its all the solace us survivors have.
@MurPaDiLos so your saying your friends died for nothing? iraq just had its first democratic election and its people dont have to live in fear of terrorism like before YOU DISCRACE YOUR FRIENDS SAYING THEY DIED FOR A MISTAKE WHAT A COWARD THING TO SAY ABOUT YOUR BROTHERS IN ARMS
Watched it live with a fellow veteran, with this war we have now , brings vietnam right back to the front of all our brains. And for those who were there and came home alive let hope these men and women come home to a better welcome!! Bless all our vets.
this guy is a hero its people like him that alows us to be what we are and alow us to have the lesher and lugshery that we live in now (plz exuse the spelling its not the point)
wow. thats about all I can say about mr.harris. he is one of my many heros. sorry that he add to go thourgh that. and thank you times 100 mr. harris for your servis.
I love that song, as my niles he seems to tell his story with great ease....you would think it doesnt bother him through the years or whatnot. But the sad truth is no combat troop will ever forget what they had gone through, god bless Mr. Harris he is a true hero.
it must br so hard for mr. harris to retell this story. watching people fall all around you. i can hardly fathom how he must feel during this interview.
